    The Burm Has Landed!
No name yet, but he's got good looks for miles! ( actually, and this is his first official measurement, his good looks go on for 2 feet, 4 1/3 inches)

1.0 green albino, 100% het granite, produced by Steven Bostwick July 2017.

Dang, that is one ugly snake.....

J/K lol. Not going to lie, I'm kind of jealous. I love the broken stripe down his back and how it fades into his background color down by his tail. Awesome pick up man. Grats. I'm not sure burms push but if they do, welcome to the world of worry lol. Caesar hs a fat lip again that i just noticed after giving him a bath in his tub. So i guess its heavy feeding time for a week or two and hopefully his swollen lip goes down :(

Funny story with the name. My wife, who is not a snake fancier but it's none-the-less the greatest woman on earth for letting me pursue my hobby, made me concede to let the kids and her name the snake as something of a compromise.
With that in mind, there is a strong possibility that this majestic giant, will be called Dr. Waffles

I hear ya. A burm is a little too much snake for me. I really want to keep anything i get around the 10 ft mark. I was really considering getting a male mainland retic as i really like pied retics and there is no super dwarf to them yet.

So far he's a bit cage defensive (and very vocal) but super sweet once in hand. Although i wont really be holding for a a few more days to let him acclimate. He took a couple of pops at me; once when i had him on the table for the size picture, and once while i was trying to get him out of my little holding bin and into his actual enclosure. But while i was handling him he was super easy, just sat in my hand then cruised up my arm and discovered the almighty neck warmth, lol. Once on my shoulder he wrapped his tail around a shirt button and i actually had to work him for like 5 straight minutes to get him to come down.

My girl was pretty cage defensive and very vocal when I first got her. Striked at me a few times but never got bit. She calmed down pretty quick though. It's been over a year now and she's as sweet as can be. She will still get vocal sometimes if I wake her up but stops as soon as I pet her or pick her up. Give him some Time I'm sure he'll be great!

First feeding is in the books!
I was worried because he had only ever had live mice and I was offering a thawed rat (weaned) and he did not want to strike at or coil it while I was dancing it with the tongs, in fact he was downright scared of it. But I left it in there and covered up the tub and an hour later I had no rat and a nice lumpy python.

OK, so after a week of acclimation i have 3 handling session under my belt since Wednesday, and so far; pretty darn good. He hisses like crazy when i'm trying to get him out, but once in hand he's cool. Notably, the first session involved a ton of hissing, a ton of striking and a ton of pee and musk (super pleasant) the second only hissing and one mock strike, the third, hissing and no striking at all, although there is some musk, but i think it may have just rubbed off him as opposed to the first time when i literally saw the stream coming out. 2 out of the three he was nervous in hand at first (or maybe i was) but then chilled out big time after a little while. To be honest i am just working on managing my own expectations. I know young burms are supposed to be like this, its just that both my boas were puppy tame right out of the box so this is a bit of an adjustment for me, especially considering how much bigger he's going to get and how much faster that growth is going to occur compared to the boas.

    Great attitude, bad eatter

Little punk is a mouser. I dont know what possessed him to take the rat the first feeding but since then he's refused twice, but during the second refusal i offered a mouse and he snatched and wrapped it in a split second. That second time i had tried heating the mouse and the rat together, but i guess i wasn't thorough enough to really get the mouse scent onto the rat. On the advice of a snake group friend, this week i am getting some soiled mouse substate from my local pet store in which to thaw and heat the rat. I've also been told chicken broth on the rat might entice him, that sounds like a long shot to me but it certainly would be more convenient and less gross than mouse leavings.

On the brighter side, he's proving to be a very nice little snake. He still hisses when i open his lid, but no striking, just some noise and then goes into puppy-dog mode as soon as i get a hand on him. I've even started letting my son handle him.

    Oye!!
This time I stored, thawed, and heated the rat with a mouse, then I smashed mouse blood and mouse poop all over the rat, even plucked out some mouse fur and kind of massaged it into the rat – still no dice!
So again he just ate a mouse but at least today also happened to be Gimel's feeding day so at least the rat did not go to waste. Incidentally, she smashed that rat harder than I have ever seen her do. All that mouse nastiness must have spiced it up for her just right, lol.

Your Burm is gorgeous! If he knows you'll give him a mouse when he refuses rats he'll keep doing it and it'll be tougher to make the transition. Now that you know he'll eat rats don't offer him anything else unless he starts losing significant weight. It's tough love though because you may have to starve him out for a while but he'll eventually get the message and eat whatever you offer.

It's time for some tough love. If he doesn't take the rat don't give in. He will eat the rat sooner or later.
  • 12-23-2017, 01:23 AM
    dkatz4
with regard to the tough love approach, 2 question: 1- how long can i keep a f/t rat in the cage and how often should i reheat? and 2 - for a 5 month old burm who was used to 10 day feeding intervals, how long should i let him go without eating before i give in and offer a mouse (hopefully it doesn't come to that)?

Also, I've heard chicken broth and/or tuna "juice" can help, but i'm skeptical considering he's never eaten fish or fowl (and he's not a cat)
  • 12-23-2017, 06:22 PM
    Tigerhawk
He will be fine going past the ten day mark. What you want is for him to get hungry enough so that he's ready to eat just about anything that's warm and smells like a rodent. Wait fifteen days before you offer the rat. However before you offer it rub it all over with a mouse. You will win, Burm's are big snakes they can't eat mice forever. Can you imagine how many mice it would take to fill up a hundred pound burm. If he doesn't eat after that DO NOT GIVE HIM A MOUSE. You will win don't give in don't give up.:)

    Re: The Burm Has Landed!
I agree with Hawk, no mice. You'd go broke with a mouser Burm :). If he doesn't eat right away leave the feeder in overnight. Try offering food every 14 days, then every 17-21 days, then every 3-4 weeks. Try that for 3 months and see if he gets on track. I doubt he'll go past 17-21 days though. That's about what it took for my finicky feeder to get with the program. I still believe that hunger ALWAYS wins in the end. Hang in there.

    Trouble feeding ??

Hi , for what it's worth , I've had 99.99% success with the HAIRDRYER method . The basics I've noticed are to feed in the evening , after dark and in very low light . I thaw either naturally or on a radiator / heat mat or for speed in very warm water ( in a bag to preserve the all important smell/ odour . Then at the last minute blast for a short while to get the mouse / rat to a decent temp and offer INSTANTLY as they cool down very quickly . Then if there's the very SLIGHTEST interest shown you're normally in business , if there's no strike just repeat the above exactly and offer again INSTANTLY , repeat until taken .

If there is absolutely ZERO interest then I wait for ten days before trying again but there is no handling or cleaning done in that time ...

Do you think I should attempt a rat at the seven day mark this week? I would be shocked if he actually took it, although I am curious if the tuna fish trick would actually work, but I really don't feel like throwing away a perfectly good rat either.

Just try the rat and if he doesnt eat it, leave it in the cage for a couple hours. If still no bites, toss it to the boa. Luna is DEATHLY scared of rats and does machine gun attacks on them and then runs off to the other side of the cage and hides lol. I've tried scenting and everything. What i did was lay a mouse down on a piece of cardboard next to a rat. She came over when the want for food was stronger than the scared factor and ate the mouse, then came back and checked the rat out and ate that too. Just get half size of each so it totals to the total size of one prey if that makes sense. I quit doing it though and just went back to mice as Luna is fine with adult mice still. Once she gets large enough, I'm sure i can switch her over. I wouldnt doubt your burm would switch once he outgrew mice.

    Length update!

He had a perfect shed last night (and a perfectly stinky BM and pee) so i broke out my trusty dollar bill and .....[drum roll].....

    2 feet, 6.5 inches!

thats just over 2 inches since i got him a month ago and, mind you, he's not been a great eater during that time. Hopefully he'll get on the rat-wagon this month! I'm going to feed him on Friday, that will have been 2 weeks since he had a mouse so i'm hoping he'll be hungry enough to take the rat. I feel bad for "starving" him, it was just lucky that he went into shed this week or else i might have caved in and tried earlier.
