Why not just remove the moulding ??
You gain a little extra room at the same time of getting rid of that annoyance .. You can tape in on the back but outside the glass if you really like the look of it .

I had the same heart-attack once. Couldn't find snakey anywhere and was frantically searching around my room incase he got out. Eventually I found him still in the tank, in the back of the waterfall wedged in the corner like this:

NO IDEA how he fit in there - he was about 3 foot at the time and the waterfall was still perfectly positioned in the corner of the tank.
