Hello all....

This is my first post and I joined because I wanted to get a bp. I went to the pet store and then I almost made a purchase. Then I get online and am learning about the morphs and I'm so confused. I would really like to breed something cool in a few years and if I'm going to get a bp now, I should really figure out what I want. Here's some questions for you guys.

1.Normal balls can look like a morph but aren't because it's just an abnormality that isn't passed on to offspring right? I could get a really cool looking ball that would normalize as it aged?

2.If I were to just get a normal female, I could breed it w/ a morph or het later and produce morphs, or do I need to get a het female to achieve the right results?

3.What is the best site that has information regrding genetics breeding and morphs that I can really learn a lot from.

4.I was thinking, can say a bp breed w/ a boa or something? If so, what kind of hybrids have been tried, and are there any dangers or risks associated w/ it?

1. Yes there are some 'odd' looking ball pythons that are not genetic morphs.

2. For a person just getting into ball pythons, a normal female would be your best choise. You could breed it to a co-dom/dom trait male and produce morphs or you could breed it to a homo. recessive trait male and produce hets. Read those links, I posted for alot more info.

4. Pythons and boas do not mix....one lays eggs...the other gives live birth. There are many hybrids of different pythons. I know that balls have been mixed with bloods, angolans, and borneos.

Welcome to the forum Salty. There's tons of good information around about genetics and breeding as well as good husbandry practises and setting up different kinds of enclosures before you actually get your snake (that way it's all set for temps and humidity before you pop in your new baby royal).

You know, for months, I could not figure out any of the genetics or what it meant. Then I sat down and looked at Ralph Davis' site and it all made sense. I completely understand codominant and simple recessive. But that is where it ends..I didn't even bother to go any further because it got confusing.

Agreed...Mark rocks...He might be the best thing out of Canada as far as Ball breeders. There are a bunch of great breeders up there. Corey Woods, Jeff Favelle, Tim Cranwill. I bet I missed a couple.

You know the crazy thing. Turns out I grew up only a very short distance from where Mark and his wife are in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada (I grew up in nearby Lindsay). Mark's been kind enough to extend an invitation for Mike and I to come and visit whenever I get back to my hometown, which is just not often unfortunately.

I agree, if you want to breed, buy a normal female or Het for something female first cuz they need more time to reach breeding age. Het Albinos are a good choice, and in a year or two you could buy an Albino male. Or if you're budget doesn't fit that plan, buy a normal female now and in a year or two buy a Pastel male which will statistically 50/50 give you Pastels (it being co-dominant). Just make sure you have your snake sexed properly cuz there's nothing worse than raising a snake for two or three years and finding out it isn't the sex you wanted.
