Snake Attacks

I found this online and thought it was interesting

What are your opinions on these snake attacks? Were they the fault of the owners? Are snakes sometimes dangerous pets?

I dont think they're any more dangerous than dogs or cats, but I'd love to hear your opinoons

If anyone is scared of a snake "attack" from a ball python, I don't know what to tell you. Their bites are like being gummed to death by a very angry newborn baby. If you are lucky they will cut the skin and you will have a story to tell your grandchildren of the time you nearly died from a few pinprick holes in your hand.

Now if you own a full grown say anaconda or retic and you don't know how to handle it, you should not have owned a full grown anaconda or retic. Large snake attacks resulting in death or bodily harm to the point where they are in the hospital are 1000% the owner's fault for either complacency or incompetence. I am not talking about bites but of serious injury due to carelessness. that bite to the face story was totally the owner's fault for being complacent and not aware of surroundings and the snake's mood.

If you own a large species and it gets loose that is also your fault.

This is why I will not own a full size snake, I would get complacent and I am not wanting the responsibility.


In other words, operator error.

I am now worried that my snake will attack me with his salmonella...I didn't know they would resort to bio-terrorism

edit- the bottom two (an 8 foot retic in a 30 gal aquarium, and an emaciated snake) how is this not the humans' fault



On a real note, there are millions of dog / cat bites per year, that require just as much medical care and can resort in death...17 "attacks" since 1978, really stretching it there. Yeah, they can be dangerous, but so can any animal...they become more so when treated irresponsibly and when you stop respecting their strength.

"A six foot albino python bit a man and chased him..."

"A child was bit from a four foot boa constrictor that was hiding in his dresser drawer..."


Sounds like it would make a good low class horror flick LOLOL (Pass the popcorn!)

GoHerping on Youtube actually made a video about how horribly uninformed and wrong the Humane Society of the US is about reptiles, and makes a lot of comparisons to dogs. Mostly because they're the animal most people are familiar with. And cause tons more damage than snakes. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, and I really want one when we move out of this complex, but dang. Why villainize snakes/reptiles where there are pets that actually could hurt you that everyone keeps?

I think I just answered that question for myself ;).

We laugh but ball pythons are the deadliest snake with ball in the name.

These seem like the fault of the people, if you're gonna get a retic or burm or something big you should, y'know have an enclosure they can't escape from. These seem like the fault of irresponsible or inexperienced keepers.

That site is spread around a lot. If you actually read closely, a bunch of these "records" are fear-mongering, over-exaggerated lies. Check this:

May 1, 2011/Opelousas, Louisiana: A gardener cutting weeds in a client’s yard in aresidential neighborhood encountered a 5-foot snake with an estimated 6-inchcircumference, believed to be a python. As he reached to pick up the snake, theanimal latched onto his hand and dragged the 6-foot, 143-pound man into thebushes, swallowing his hand and shredding the tops of his fingers.

A 5 foot snake can drag a 6 foot man? And swallow his hand? LOL. I'm about to die laughing.

For those without perception on snake size, my dumeril's boa is 6 feet long, thick-bodied, and I am a 5'5" girl and I can easily man-handle her. She is about the width of my wrist, and weighs 7 lbs. I still handle her gently.

October 23, 2009/Panama City, Florida: A construction worker was bitten twice onthe hand by a 4-foot albino Burmese python after he attempted to move the snakefrom a pile of dirt at a home under construction.

If incidents like drawing a bit of blood from a small python can make it onto the list, why not start listing every cat scratch and bite too? A bite from a pet rat or hamster is far more damaging than from a 4 foot python, whose head is still only the size of a girl's thumb.

And I only skimmed the top for these two. I remember reading another listed incident being some 3-4 foot boa biting a girl's finger. That's considered a "snake attack". :rolleyes:

The humane society posts whatever the "victims" of snake crimes tell them lmao most of those are so exaggerated. I've never heard of a python of any kind chasing someone! lmao

My 5 foot python Godzilla once grabbed me and threw me across the room, it took two of my friends to pry off her enormous body from my neck, it turns out she weighs a whopping 7 pounds and could easily kill 10 men. :rolleyes:

Oh my, i never knew that all pets require responsibility. Go ahead and come get my snakes. Right after you pry my rifle out of my cold dead hands.

When I saw this article was from the Humane Society of the United States, which is waaaay different than your local Humane Society, I knew that I was done reading this article. Without taking the time to do a ton of typing, just Google this outfit. It is really bad when the Huffington Post even throws this outfit under the bus. The HSUS is no animal lovers friend, it is an organization of indoctrinators not much unlike PETA. They prey on the weak and our children by sensationalism.

You guys, I work as a Dispatcher for a large Central Florida Fire Department... its almost like people HAVE to exaggerate snake things. My rescue BP actually came from a "Snake Removal" call, lady called and said she had a 6 foot boa constrictor behind her water heater... :rolleyes: wound up being *maybe* 3 feet of Ball Python, and a sweet as pie one at that.

You know that the Humane Society just eats this stuff up when they can get people to tell the most exaggerated story. Unfortunately it makes our jobs as Reptile Keepers harder with negative stigma, but it gives me job security :P
