Talion Progression Thread
Well, the noodle finally arrived! We had a two hour drive to go get him, and now he's home :3
In my excitement I completely forgot to take any pictures before we put him away. We did weigh him though and he's all of 78 grams. He hatched July 10th, so he's just under four months.
I did open his lid and take a quick picture of him, so we had SOMETHING to document his first day here. Poor little man is pretty scared though, stuck at his hide when I was putting it back. Won't be bothering him until feeding day.
Breeder said to try him on Friday, but I'm thinking I should give him a full week to chill out. Thoughts?
Anyways, here he is! I'll get more, and in better lighting in a few weeks when he's settled in.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...62547d4593.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...664c14c330.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c9c16dea97.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...671acf6c0f.jpg

Beautiful snake, I love the head stamp. Very unique :)

Beautiful boy!
When it comes down to the when to feed question there are different schools of thought. Some go by a hard fast wait a week rule. I personally prefer to read my snake. If he is starting to peek his head out by Friday and is active at night chances are that he'll be ready to feed.

Thank you! Clowns always have to most interesting head stamps, don't they? And the uniqueness of his pattern was the deal breaker between him and his brother for sure.

Thanks :D
That's probably exactly what I'll do in terms of feeding him. If he seems ready on Friday I'll go for it, if not he can wait the full week. Thanks for the input.

Thank you! I'll let the little sir know the next time I see him.
On our way outside to let the dog out before bed last night I saw him climbing on his vine and exploring a bit. :D
So happy! I just want to go hold him but.. must. resist. the. urge.

Thanks! He was my favorite too. Plus I'm pretty sure the other snake that he switched to f/t was actually not the second snake that we were considering sooooooo that made the final choice pretty easy haha.
Also, I know this is an awful picture, but I'm so happy to see him go for his quick little explorations at night! This is taken through the tub, so I'm sorry, but it's the closest thing to interaction that I have right now xD
I could stare at him all day <3https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bd4a4113f5.jpg

Re: Talion Progression Thread
He ate!!
*happy dance*
I'm such a proud momma right now! I wasn't sure if he was actually settled in enough to eat, and the smallest rat fuzzies that the store had were a tad on the large side for him. Tim assured me they would be fine, so I figured why not, let's try today. I've caught him poking around once or twice at night and it's been a week and a bit since his last meal with Tim.
Thawed in cool water, then heated it up with the hair dryer and once I took his hide off of him he went right for it. Didn't seem scared of it at all, just went for a great strike and construction.
Aaaahhhhh I'm so happy. I love that feeling!
I'm sitting here yelling to Bryan "He struck it!!" ..... "he's eating it - yay!" .... "come watch him eat!" And he's looking at me like I'm nuts haha. Probably am. Oh well!
(Seems silly to be so proud of a snake for eating haha)
:D

Re: Talion Progression Thread
Kiddo was out today for a few minutes. There's a huge strike here with the colleges, so the boyfriend and I are headed home for a few weeks. Talion got bundled back up in his travelling box for the trip.
He was very chill and curious though, before he was so rudely deposited back in his bag lol.
It doesn't come across well in the photos (lighting in my apartment is garbage) but his stomach is looking pink. I think he may be due for a shed soon :)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ece0dad198.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f73bb57fed.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3ab8ac8b33.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9a0e38eda3.jpg

Re: Talion Progression Thread
Meal #4 is a success!
Talion still hasn't pooped, but he weighed in at 147g on Monday! Up from 78g when I got him Oct 31st :)
I'm still leaving him alone for the most part, other than taking him out when I need to really spray down his eco earth and mix the damp stuff through. He's so calm and relaxed when he's out though. It makes me incredibly happy!
(Now to go feed the scary corn snake xD)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d51d0e9150.jpg

Final benchmark achieved xD
Little man has been with us almost 5 weeks and has gone from 78g to 146g!
Not bad little wurm, not bad.
Next time I take him out I'll cuddle less and get a few pictures of him :) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3c8de799be.jpg

Re: Talion Progression Thread
Someone's eating rat pups! I was worried he wouldn't have as good of a feeding response as he did with mice, but he's still eating like a champ :)
Please don't mind the low ambient temp, it's just from me having the lid off of the tub while I watched him eat lol.
Ugh. I also really want to find a different substrate. He's always getting a ton of eco earth in his mouth and I can't imagine too pleasant. Suggestions that are available in Canada, and hold humidity really well? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4e1c17b000.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8fee74b17e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e14a4a8e45.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b79a2981fb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cfc62ddec7.jpg

Honestly, some substrate shouldn't be an issue. They don't gain nutritional benefit from it, but they can digest and pass it if its fine, just like the roughage in their prey's stomachs. Other than rare instances, as long as they're well hydrated, there's no real problems. Coco coir style stuff isn't really a danger.
That said, orchid bark based potting mediums may meet your needs; the coconut husk chip kind.

I'll take a look into that, thank you!
Rationally I know it's not going to be harmful for him, but he definitely 'yawns' more frequently when I can see eco earth at the edge of his lips. I imagine it's not super pleasant always having dirt in your mouth. (No signs of RI, so I'm relatively certain the yawn is substrate related)
I'll go check out the local gardening place the next chance I get :)

Re: Talion Progression Thread
So we got back from our Christmas break yesterday. We were only gone ten days, but it sure was good to see the snakes again!
They missed a feeding while we were gone, so Talion was very eager for food.
I appreciate the enthusiasm, but that can't be comfortable!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...36536c57b5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e1de076643.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1c4d88e939.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5bfea241f6.jpg

Thanks! It's a super busy birthday with exams and kennel duty for school (up at 5am taking care of dogs and cats lol) but it's been a good day!
Definitely vanilla cake though!

Re: Talion Progression Thread
Update on the little Talion.
It seems like he's growing so fast! Little man weighs 245g now, as opposed to the 68g he came to us at Oct 31st. He's the hungriest boople I've ever met - not that I'm complaining!
Anyway here are a couple quick pictures of him. He's so calm now, super curious and not at all jumpy. I can boop the little dot that's right on the tip of his snoot and he doesn't even pull back xD
