Dr. Joerg Meyer of the University of Georgia is conducting a survey on preferences of exotics pet owners for types of veterinary care. He works in a large teaching hospital and thinks many clinicians assume that clients want the very best available technology and medications, but sometimes they prefer more economical alternatives. For your Dr. friend...

Things that need to be taught to every exotics vet

1. Never ever assume your client is uneducated.
2. Ask how many of a particular species the owner is keeping and for how long before you begin a lesson on proper care.
3. Get current on the species you are going to be treating before walking into the room with the client.
4. Do not treat a breeder or a large collector like a person that just brought in the family dog. (Before I will even entertain seeing a vet I make it very clear that I will need and expect that I be treated like a livestock farmer instead of a pet owner)

Want and afford are sometimes two very different things. Very realistic payment plans are very important to me. A big concern of mine is the growing support for medical insurance for pets. If it goes the way of health insurance has for humans, I expect that insurance will end up being a necessity that many people won’t be able to afford, and out of pocket payments will become impossible.
