Reptile prime
Mine arrived today, and so far I'm digging this stuff. I'd definitely say it's dust free as they advertise it. Hardly no chunks at all, plenty of fibers throughout the mix. Switched it out and within 30 minutes tubs were at 60% humdity. Shot of the tubs from the front included, and Atlas heading into his hide after switching out.

Re: Reptile prime
What were you using before. Do you have to wet this stuff down?? Where do you get it??
-
reptileprime.com Takes paypal.
It comes loose and dry but you can mix in water to moisten it up as you see fit.

Like sda said, ordered it from their website. No one local to me sells it. I was using a blend of eco earth and cypress mulch before. With the reptile prime I covered my tubs as I wanted then gave it a good misting.

Good stuff. I won't ever use anything else. Oh that reminds me...I need to order another bag.
-
OH! They now come with a ziploc style zipper so resealing is much easier
-
Re: Reptile prime
It is really amazing bedding. Holds the humidity well, easy to spot clean, absolutely no odors, and the snakes can burrow in it.
-
Re: Reptile prime
I just ordered two bags to see how well it works for me! Sounds interesting and can't wait to try it out. :D
-
i wanna try this product or similar stuff. i just get the feeling that coconut husks (i.e. Reptichips) is uncomfortable and i tried it on myself. i put some in an empty tub, took off my shoes and socks, and i step into it. i love the humidity it provides, how it keeps down odors but didn't like the feeling on my bare feet/skin. not sure if it would feel the same to BP's/snakes Lol. anyway this and other cocofiber products sounds like it provides the same benefits but more even spread through the tub and possibly better comfort.
-
How do you order this stuff. I went to the website but could not purchase it. Is this something that Bryan for BHB developed and sells or is he just endorsing it??
Please advise on where to buy it.
Thanks

Never mind - I found it under Herptopia.com
Thanks

Re: Reptile prime
This stuff soaks up water tremendously, depending on where u live and the humidity in your home, might take a few misting to get it where u want it.

They FINALLY put a link on the main BHB page. I suggested it as soon as he put his face on the bag and the office mgr said that she couldn't believe they hadn't already. Makes it a lot easier.
He is endorsing/became a major investor in a product that was already being produced by Midwest Organics. They make a few coco husk based products, the largest being CatSpot cat litter...they throw some pretty big money around as they have a few NHRA sponsorship out there.
The Reptile Prime is a "re-branding" of their Herptopia bedding. It truly is awesome stuff.

I use Prococo and buy it by the pallet. It's what most of the big breeders use and I love it. The bigger chunks keep most snakes from eating it (all but my retics). It's $20 on amazon but I get it for about half price when buying it by the pallet, half of that $20 is from shipping a ten pound block through the mail. It expands like you wouldn't believe, just three expanded blocks fills a 55 gallon drum! If you haven't tried it to compare I would highly recommend trying it out at least once.

Re: Reptile prime
Will my hondurans be able to burrow in this bedding
-
-
Is it better than reptichip?
-
Yep. In my opinion it is 100% better. But I can't stand reptichip lol
-
I like it MUCH better then Reptichip.
Any of those "blocks" of Coco chips, no matter what brand, need to be expanded with water. The positives about that are that you get a LOT more product once it is expanded, and you usually pay less.
But...
No matter which trick you use to get the block to expands with as little water as possible, the finished product is still far more wet then I would like. When used in "tubs" this creates 100% humidity for a long time. Creates a LOT of condensation which in turn keeps the substrate wet.
You also need a huge bin to store that mass of wet, expanded coco chips. I ended up keeping them in a huge bin and "turning" them every day with a hand shovel, trying to get them to dry quicker.
If someone uses cages, it would probably work out fine. A cage will dry these shavings out far quicker then a tub, esp. since its always rather challenging to keep humidity UP in cages or tanks.
But for tubs, "I" want to control the humidity. I want to start with a DRY product and then mist as needed !!
Reptile Prime is also easier to clean. You SEE the mess quite easily and can remove it completely. The bigger chunks in the Coco Chips make it a little harder to see and get everything out.
So basically, it all depends on your needs. If you need a TON of substrate, it might be more economical to go to the dry blocks of Coco Chips. If you have tanks / cages, the chips may work wonderful as well and if you have the space to store the expanded chips, by all means ;)
However, if you don't want to store big bins, if you have tubs, if you don't want to start out with "somewhat wet" substrate, then Reptile Prime is the winner.

Re: Reptile prime
I ordered some of this bedding on 10/20 - I have yet to hear anything from them as to when they may ship my product. Is this normal for them?? I don't really even have any way to contact them. I ordered online via Herptopia.com The whole process seemed rather convoluted. Now I wonder if I am even getting my product??
-
Personally I would be very cautious of too much humidity, I think 60% is too much in my opinion. I use Prococo because I need a lot of bedding for all my racks and need something economical. I prefer a humidity to where the bottom layer of the coconut husk is damp and the top is dry.
In my ARS racks in a dry climate the top layer dries out fast, and the condensation on the walls of the tubs are gone in a day. I do mist every day but it dries out fast on top, if the bottom layers dry out I mix the substrate by hand while misting to get the bottom layer damp. Some big breeders don't even monitor their humidity and keep things as dry as possible until just before a shed to prevent respiratory infections. From what I've seen just about any of these coconut husk type bedding are ideal. But I do find that some products mold, probably from contaminants in the mix.
i have not tried this product but would like to at some point just for comparison.

I recently ordered from them and received the product in a timely fashion. Perhaps not as fast as Amazon etc, but I didn't expect it to be that way..
The 20th was a Friday, so most likely your order didn't really start processing until Monday. I would expect it to ship today, though, if it hasn't already. Shoot them an email...
I'm not sure what you mean about the process being convoluted ? I ordered through Herptopia, too, (although that webpage defaults to Reptile Prime) added the product to the shopping cart and checked out, received it a few days later.
If you go to Reptile Prime webpage (same thing as Herptopia, changed names) there is a phone number, email and they also have a facebook. Should be able to get in touch with someone then.

I'm also not a fan of "to high" humidity with Ball Pythons, esp. if that means they sit on wet (or moist) substrate. I only keep it higher or moist to the touch during the shed cycle. Moist and warm breeds bacteria quickly.
I do mist almost every day, but its just in an area between the dry/cool ends, so that the snake can still choose where to hang out, without having to choose wet substrate in order to thermo regulate or "hide".
My display cage still has a mix of Reptile Prime and Repti Chips. I like that for the cage, because it holds humidity longer. That's why I wish you could buy the chips dry and in smaller quantities. I don't want to buy a block and store the expanded chips, just to mix soem with other substrate for one single cage..

Email them if you have any problems they are really good about fixing it. I once got a wrong tracking number and they found the correct one right away.
Generally takes about 4-7 days to get to you depending how far from Missouri you are.
You should have got an email with a tracking number and an order confirmation. Of course it will be sent to the email on your paypal account.
Their info is

Re: Reptile prime
I emailed them today inquiring about it. I did get an email right when I placed the order just acknowledging my order but that was the last and only communication.
I hope to hear back from them today.

Check your spam filters. The processing is midwest organics and you should have a confirmation email that looks just like this.

Is dust really non existent in reptile prime? I use reptichip and they say it's dust free but that's definitely not a true statement, idk if it's just the bigger chunks breaking into smaller pieces over time but I definitely notice some dust after cleaning a tub. I don't notice dust putting the reptichip in though. I personally like it though, keeps humidity up, easy to spot clean, absorbs odors like you would not believe. Thinking about trying reptile prime just to see if it somehow out performs it. Anybody here not like reptile prime for some reason?

Re: Reptile prime
I just got an update on my order. They said it shipped out but for some reason the email message letting me know this got lost in the shuffle.
All is good. Can't wait to get this stuff.

I wouldn't say its "dust free". But greatly reduced over other substrates I've used. I really only notice "some" dust when I scoop it out of the bag. Our house stays fairly dry, with central heat/AC.
Once the substrate is in the tubs, that I maintain at a higher *but not wet* humidity, I do not notice any dust when disturbing it.
ReptiChip was dusty once I had it completely dried out. But not to a point where it became a problem. I noticed it most when scooping it up out of my bin, it made me cough a little and my arms were covered in fine dust. But again, once in the cages or tubs, the higher humidity kept it under control..
Reptile Prime is VERY light and fluffy, so sometimes the snakes just push it around rather then stay "on top" of it. But honestly, they did that with the ReptiChip, too, once it was dry..
-
My retic had a dirty face when the Prococo dried out too much, he had to shed to get rid of it. Now I never let it dry out completely, one of the reasons I check each tub every day. Seems like they feed better too if you are spot cleaning every day.

Yes it really is dust free. There are a lot of YouTube videos as well.

60% humidity in the cage should be a non-issue with ball pythons. While the humidity in their native habitats can fluctuate quite a bit, the humidity range regularly exceeds 70-80% so you are unlikely to have any issues with numbers greater than or equal to 60%.
That said, damp or wet substrate is a concern for the reasons listed above (bacteria, mold, etc.), but also for skin/scale infections. In most conventional setups, I would expect a large water dish and reptile prime to keep the humidity just fine unless your ambient is extremely low. The substrate will very slowly absorb moisture from the humid air.

I just ordered a bag to try. I have switched to paper towel as sub straight ever since getting a rack. I tried experimenting with reptichip, but like Zina said, the humidity spikes and I don't like that. It does however work very well in my glass tank. It spikes to 80% for a little but it quickly dries out. I have been recently thinking of trying aspen, but this tread made me more interested in the reptile prime.

Re: Reptile prime
I really do like using this bedding as my humidity levels are always good and they can burrow if they want.
I just opened one of the new zip lock bags....very nice to be able to reseal it for storage. I know they've had that style bag for a few months but like to keep at least 3-4 bags "in stock" just in case I get the urge to do a full bedding swap. Speaking of...how often do you guys do a full substrate swap?
Placing a 6 bag order today - as I'm setting up the new T10 and T12 that shipped yesterday!!!! I wish they had larger bags or discounts on shipping multiple bags.

Honestly, I haven't done an entire swap. But I'm very particular about cleaning up quick and thorough. I push all the dry and clean substrate into a corner, making sure to keep all soiled stuff apart. Then I scoop out the soiled substrate, finally wiping that area down with a paper towel that has been sprayed with F10, then wiping dry. After that I push the clean substrate back over the area and add more as needed :)
I check daily or twice daily for messes. I don't smell them in the room anymore, like I used to when I used paper towels or aspen.

Re: Reptile prime
Mine arrived two days ago and i just started filling in a couple of tubs. Jeez! the humidity percentage shot up to 97% with a very light misting. Although it has gradually come down over the past hour or so to 84%. The stuff really adds to the aesthetics of the enclosure as well. I like it so far. :D
-
Re: Reptile prime
I just switched stitch from paper towel to reptile prime. So far I like the texture and the fact that it arrives dry and not in a brick form. However, the bricks are a bit cheaper for the amount you get. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2dcd14b8ae.jpg

How many reptile prime bags will be needed for an AP T-10 cage?
-
Hey Night King. I am not familiar with the sizing of the AP T-10 cage, but I can tell you that one bag of Reptile Prime gives me about 3/4" of bedding in 5 Hefty 40 qt. tubs. Here are the tubs I use in my rack system, dimension are listed in the description so you should be able to extrapolate your dimensions accordingly.

1 bag will last you about 2-3 changes of substrate depending on how deep you want your substrate

Re: Reptile prime
Question...I know not everyone is a big fan of glass tanks but that is what we have for our BP. How many bags does anyone think would take to fill a 45 gallon for my BP??? Thanks in advance!!!
-
Maybe 1/2 bag. It shouldn't be deeper than 1/2 inch it so.

I lay my bedding thick so my snakes can burrow. I use almost a whole bag and that gives me 2"-4" throughout.

Re: Reptile prime
Does anyone know how to order this stuff? I tried herptopia.com and that site is no longer up. I tried reptileprime.com, hit the shop now, added it to my cart and when I hit check out it gave me a pop up that said the store will be powered by Shopify and to enter my email to be notified once it is open.
Is there anywhere else this stuff can be ordered from? Does anyone have a good link they can post?
Thanks in advance!
