Dean Progression
http://oi66.tinypic.com/2ik7hq9.jpg
So...I bought a Beep. He's a tiny 2017 hatchling and is eating mouse fuzzies.
His enclosure stats are as follows
10 gal tank
Aspen as substrate (As soon as possible I will switch to forest floor)
Heated by a heat lamp with red bulb on a dimmer
Hot side 88 degrees
Cold side 82
Humidity on cold side is 72 and hot side is around 58
I have foil covering the screen top
2 hides(not including the paper towel tube running along the back if the tank)
Constructive criticism is welcomed! Please be honest.

You are doing better than most! The majority of people I see selling their ball pythons on craigslist have no clue! lol.
I would only add a couple of caves (hides), and an under tank heater on a thermostat at some point, but you may as well wait for the UTH until you have to get a bigger tank as he will outgrow the 10 gallon quite rapidly.

Thank you! I actually do have a heat mat on a thermostat but I don't have a probed thermometer yet to read what its at so just the lamp for now :)

So, not a big deal but Dean was out exploring for the first time today!(I just got him today so I was surprised) Here's a bad pic that I tried to take without disturbing him

Re: Dean Progression
Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on how to keep the humidity up? So far I've put foil over the top, put the water bowl under the heat lamp and am planning on changing my substrate

I have a 10 for Odyn. On the hot side I have his uth which reads 90 on the glass. His hid then a 40w red heat bulb on top. I have an accurite temp gage that is I. The front middle of the tank for ambient temp and humidity. Ambient always stays at 81, humidity stays at 65-70. I use reptile prime coco husk. Aspen will suck the moisture up so change that. I have cut a piece of cardboard to fit the dimensions of the screen top, put the lamp on it(off of course) traced around it and cut out the hole for the heat lamp. I then covered the cardboard with foil. All my temps stay the same on average. I also have fake ivy in there for him too. My water bowl is in the middle, not under my heat lamp.

I'll try Coco-husk :) My temps seem okay(Right?) Although they seem to from 88 to 90. My humidity has gone down to 42 since I posted last  Have to deal with that as soon as possible. Poor Lil dude is probably so confused as to why its raining so much
-
Your temps seem ok yes. How much does your beep weigh. Get him off of fuzzies. Way to small. Hatchlimgs usually start on hoppers for 3-4 feeding them go to adult mice.

Okay. I don't actually have a scale but I will work on getting one. I have six fuzzies in my freezer, what should I do with those?
-
Feed him three each feeding lol
-
wet towel covering the screen works the best at retaining humidity. I use cypress mulch, and infrared heat only, with a layer of metallic bubblewrap insulation covering 90% of the screen, so my tank humidity stays high.
Back when I started, I used a heating lamp and aspen, it would dry out rapidly and I had to use the wet towel method.

Okay :P I hope he eats. I know he needs to settle in without being held before I should even attempt feeding to avoid refusals

Three feedings before holding.

Re: Dean Progression
So...Dean knocked over his thermomter for the second time and I opened his cage to put it upright so I could see what his temps and humidity were. I got it upright...and I felt something soft on my other hand(which was over the cage). Dean had seen the open top and decided my hand was the way to freedom. I feel really bad because I didnt want to stress him out but he did not want to let go of my hand. He wasnt breathing hard or staying really still though so I dont think I did any damage.(Also please note I was not trying to pick him up, I was only fixing the thermomter.) I didnt realize how long my noodle was Lol. He's been mostly balled up since i got him

Lol they certainly love to mess with their thermometers I always find it knocked over with him laying on it lol and I don't think you did any damage or caused any stress I didn't follow the 3 feeding before handling rule because I didn't know it existed and everything turned out fine!

You can use a thermostat with a heat lamp. Jumpstart works just fine as a temp thermostat, so it should work with a heat lamp as well.

Re: Dean Progression
Where would I place the probe?

hanging down just above the substrate, but not so it's laying down on it.

Inside the enclosure, hanging about half-way down somewhere. Here's where I stuck mine, I used a zip-tie to hold it against the side of the tub better. If you're using a tank (can't remember) I think you can get suction cups and it'll stay in place that way against the glass.

(THANKS LOL i saw the photo on my phone and i just. it's too good. And I have, though she doesn't have it right now because I didn't like where it was at, and I can't figure out a better place to put it LOL. maybe suspended through the lid of the tub for more height/tighter fit and security? requires a drill/ solder gun neither of which i own right now so it'll have to wait for now)
-
Totally off off topic I love that hammock ledge you made. Back on topic hanging the probe form the roof down mid length into the enclosure is agreat way to get those temps under control.
-
Re: Dean Progression
My lamp is connected to a thermostat and the temperatures are reading at 90 degrees but the thermostat is set at 88 and the temperature occasionally goes up to 95 my thermostat probe is set in the middle of the tank between the top and the substrate

Re: Dean Progression
Just wanted to ask if something like this would work for an adult Beep?(With just one tub per level)
https://www.lllreptile.com/products/...onics-ve2-rack
With these tubs
http://www.reptilebasics.com/reptile...nd-ve-6-racks/
-
Re: Dean Progression
I'm using both the 2 and 6 myself. That's a 310g male with a medium hide, you can see how much room these tubs have. For the price they can't be, come completely assembled all you have to do it plug it into a tstat. I pair mine with the ve-200. Will step up to a ve-300x2 to run both of these racks. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...02ca0a73a1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a36f9877eb.jpg

Good luck! I hope he takes the second one. When jeffree was on fuzzies he wouldn't take a second one so I had to up the size immediately hope you don't have the same problem!

Re: Dean Progression
So I picked Dean up today because his...vent? I don't know what to call it, had something pink portruding slightly and it was kind of wet, so I picked him up to check it out(Cause I was panicking) but it looked normal by the time he un-balled himself and stretched out on my hand. :confusd:
-
Re: Dean Progression
he may have been about to poop or pee - I'd just let them get on with it.
-
Re: Dean Progression
So I picked Dean up last night to show mom how small he is in a 41q tub(and to show her how clear the tubs are lol) and I had put some newspaper in the bottem of the tub and Dean immidietly pooped on it 0-0 At least I think it was poop. It was mostly water with a little bit of...poo like stuff in the middle lol I put him back immidietly after I had showed mom.
