    Wrong size bulk feeders
So first off this is not a complaint. I love my rodent guy!

so I ordered 20 small rats for boople to pick up at the reptile expo. Picked them up, talked to him for a while about feeders and went to my parents to weigh and vacuum seal them.

They are medium rats. Weighing from 75-95g

there is no way boople can eat those right? She is on the cusp for small rats.

My my plan was to feed her the smallest small rats first and then work up.

I emailed him and told him to take his time because I know he is super busy with the expo and just asked him what we should do.

I just want want to make sure that I am correct in assuming these are way to big for her. She is only 450g. These are double her weight.

Thanks deb. That's what I thought. I will see what I can do when he emails me back about them. I'll weigh a small rat at work for this week.

    thanks again.

Vacuum-seal the too-large rats so they'll keep for a while, and purchase some smalls.

I did lol. They are all sealed up 4 to a bag with weights written on the bags. They are safe for a year if I need to keep them. My mom helped me weigh and seal. She told me the entire time how much she dissaproved of feeding an animal to an animal. I said at least they aren't alive while doing this. Lol. She just looked at me lol. I love my mom...

Wait wait wait... That size is a medium? All this time I have just been asking the place I buy from to give me big sized smalls and they have been sneaking in mediums this whole time?! No wonder my snake is looking fat! :O

I would usually be feeding a ~450g snake weaned rats, which are around 40-50g, but I am usually on the conservative side when it comes to feeder size. As you note, mediums are probably a bit big for him/her. I usually don't do medium rats until the snake is like 1000g.

Rodent sizing can be pretty variable from distributor to distributor, but I would usually say a medium rat averages around ~125g or so. Your snake is probably just big boned. :D

Yep. I just weighed all the smalls here at work too and they are correct. I took the smallest small for this week until I get the order resolved.

I had them all over her counter lol. Sorted by weights. She was not amused. She is not afraid of them, just doesn't agree with feeding them to snakes. I'm like boople has to eat mom and I can give her broccoli.

It amazes me how people can be so upset about feeding carnivores, when WE AS HUMAN BEINGS ARE OMNIVOROUS PREDATORS! We can (and do) kill and eat almost any species on the planet that we desire, we kill and consume millions of pounds of animals daily...
...but feeding an animal to a predator is somehow weird or evil?

This thread is interesting... I breed my own rats and have partnered with a local snake keeper that buys my excess as I euthanize and put them in the freezer. He says anything from 50 grams to 100 grams is a small and 100 grams to 185 grams is a medium. I give him a deal, I sell them for $1.50 for a small, $2.00 for a medium. I know at that price I'm really not making very much at all but when he first came to me my freezer was full and I didn't know how to get rid of them LOL. Since then we trade a lot of stuff, the last deal he gave me a female clown at almost half price, trading almost all for my frozen rats. It's become quite the barter system along the way, rats for snakes LOL. I also buy pallets of coconut husk bedding, now we trade snakes, rats, mice, and bedding!
