Good next snake..?
Hi! So I'm wondering what a good next snake would be. I have 2 ball pythons right now, and I love them like crazy, but I am very passionate about snakes and would like to expand my little collection to maybe a few other kinds of snakes..? I'd like something a bit more challenging. My favorite snake, and my dream pet is an albino burm  But I know that's a bit bigger than ball pythons lol. And I live with my mom right now, and she doesn't like snakes too much.. And this is defiantly for in the future! I just got my most recent ball python last weekend, so in like a year or too :P But I'd like to know what a next snake would be, especially if it's a different kind. To 1. Start researching them and 2. Start saving up :) Thank you!

Re: Good next snake..?
I love RTB's (red tail boa). I only deal with balls now though. Corns are fun hand snakes. King snakes tame down the more they are handled. Garters are really easy to keep, they prefer fish which is different. Snake keeping is a big world with a lot of choices.

Oh I love red tails! I just think they get a bit big, at 8-10 ft :( Central American boas? Colubrids are great, I really do like them. I'm just kinda looking for something a bit different :) Thank you!

Yup central america. 8-10 feet. Smaller than carpet, rock, retic and burmese pythons.

I'm confused, are central Americans and red tails the same thing..? I thought RTBs got bigger than central American boas

I'd go for a boa (BI). When fed responsibly, their size is very manageable. They are also pretty docile when it's not feeding time. Can't go wrong. Lot's of morphs and very affordable. Easy take care of as well. It's win win.

Thank you! Do you have any recommendations? Like smaller boas like Kenyans, or bigger guys like the RTBs

Central Americans are smaller. I thought you were asking the rtb's natural range lol. Red tails come from central america and south America, typically Columbia.

Ok! So if I were to pick between a red tail boa, central American boa, or a rosy boa, which would you recommend? I'm wanting something that's pretty chill and docile. My mom doesn't like huge snakes, I think 7-8ish ft is the largest she'll go. Thanks again :)

I don't know much about Kenyans. I assume you mean Kenyan Sand Boas. I would check out a BI. The are more tolerant husbandry wise than BCs. The cost sort of depends on the morph you get. I like Hypos and Sunglows myself.

If you like all of these equally and want chill and docile and small, then rosy boa is the best option!
Red tails or even BCI are large (comparatively). True red tails/suriname can get up to 10 feet and are really thick and strong.

Re: Good next snake..?
Currently all of my snakes are ball pythons. (I also have 2 crested geckos.) If I got another snake species, I think it would probably be either a rainbow boa or blood python.

Re: Good next snake..?
I don't know if you're fully set on boas yet but I just wanna say a few things for colubrids [emoji14] If you wanna get something different there are plenty of colubrids other then just the basic kingsnakes and cornsnakes. Have you ever looked into old world colubrids? They are beautiful and so unique, I used to think the same that colubrids were less interesting then boas and pythons but now they are some of my favorites!
I have two ball pythons as well and the next snake I'm looking into getting is Vietnamese Blue Beauty, they are absolutely beautiful and make great display snakes, all Beauty Snakes do lol They are a bit less tame as babies but with patience and handling they can be great!
Also a big dream snake of mine is the Russian Ratsnake! They are known so much for their looks (Although I absolutely love how they look lol) but their personalities is what stands out! They are one of the only snakes that actually enjoy being handled and are said to be super intelligent and very inquisitive. Just look up some videos of them on YouTube, they are so cute!
There are lots of other super beautiful ones as well. And their care is typically very simple, they just need a bit more room to roam sense colubrids are pretty active lol I have nothing against boas and pythons, I love them just as much I just thought I'd put in a few suggestions for colubrids as well [emoji14]

Re: Good next snake..?
I'd suggest a Rhino nosed Rat snake if you go down the route mentioned above . Fabulous looking , inquisitive 24/7 and very placid ..https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6af88198a5.jpg

Hog Island Boas are AWESOME animals, relatively inexpensive and yet a BIG, BIG female would be 7ft or less. My five year old female is about 6ft and close to the diameter of a baseball. Males stay even smaller. Just make sure you buy a pure hog, some of them are crossed with BCI or even BCC sometimes and as a result , those specific animals get a little bigger.
You're suggesting looking at a smaller boa....I can't believe no one said "Hog Island" yet.
Consider it. I LOVE my girl.

If you have decided on a Boa I would recommend a female BCI if you would be alright with 6' - 8' as an adult or a male BCI if you would rather it only topped out around 4' - 6'. If you want one that tops out at only around 4' or so and you like dark snakes you should check out the Leopard Boas, which are dwarfs. They are gorgeous! A Leopard Boa/Motley pair is probably next on my list, because i'm really wanting to get into the Eclipse project. Either that or a pair of super dwarf Retics. I can't decide...
Have you considered a Sumatran, Blood or Borneo Python? A Woma Python? There are just sooo many awesome snakes that it's impossible to choose just one! lol If I wasn't getting into breeding and I just wanted a couple/few pet snakes a Boa would be a must have, though!

Re: Good next snake..?
Speaking of rat snakes i got supremely pissed off the other day. On one of my herper social media pages a guy posted a picture of a Floridian grey rat snake that he killed claiming he thought it was a cotton mouth. I scolded him about his sadistic behavior until he blocked me

Ugh I hate people like that, people who senselessly kill snakes in general really. Even as a child I understood they were way more scared of us then we are of them, when I was little I would save little garter snakes (I think they were garter snakes, I was to young to really know for sure lol) that would get into my grandparents pool because of I didn't my cousins would cut them up. I sickened me.

Exactly, snakes are defensive not aggressive. With proper care even a venomous snake can be put into a bag and be relocated, but it was a grey ratsnake, nowhere close to a cotton mouth in visualisation.

People just seem to always assume that if is small and slithers it has venom for some reason. He probably didn't even know what a cotton mouth even remotely looked like, that was just the first snake name that came to his head. I have a guy at my work that I argue with with all the time that swares up and down that ALL snakes have some sort of venom and that he "risked his life" to move a Ratsnake one time because it almost bit him. Okkaayy

I don't have experience with large boas, but I love my rosys. They are quite a bit smaller than ball pythons (adults only get 2-3 feet), more friendly, and they don't require as much humidity. They're typically more active when handled. They'll slither right up to your face and sniff your nose with their tongues if you let them! But they're also very slow so there's no need to worry about them being squirmy or making a "quick" getaway.
They're also great snakes for a typical tank setup, since they like low humidity you won't have to modify a glass tank to hold it in like you would for a ball python. As far as eating goes, they're not picky. My first rosy was on live mice for four years when I got him. I offered a frozen/thawed mouse and he took it right away. They tend to have regurgitation issues if humidity is high though, so if you live in a humid area they may not be the best pet for you.
