Should I buy her?
https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...ayellowfem.jpg
I'm awful tempted. The guy I'm buying my granite burm from has this pair of yearling yellow annies for sale. They're only $125 a piece. I want this girl. She's tame and so are her parents.
Whaddaya think?

Re: Should I buy her?
honestly, id have to say to hold off. your burm will be a handfull, male or female. wait and see what happens with your burm.
-
Re: Should I buy her?
That could be true.. I am used to dealing with burms though.. large ones at that.
Plus, this annie is tame and condas are slow growers.
Thing is, I'm going to have $400-500 to spend at this giant reptile show, gotta spend it! ;)

Re: Should I buy her?
i personally would hold off. but if you feel ready, by all means get it. just make sure you study your financial situation and all that.
-
Re: Should I buy her?
Paying for it's food is no problem. It's eating rats now which I raise, and when it moves to rabbits, I'll raise rabbits (for my burm too)
I plan on breeding my snakes too, and that'll help pay for things.

im with rex .i dont know... a conda and a burm? but if you think you can handle it go ahead.

Re: Should I buy her?
lol I've always been a bit crazy.
We'll see, but I'm really leaning toward buying her. I think she will be no problem.
I have about 1000 hours of large burm handling to my experience..

Re: Should I buy her?
one big question. are you in a good enough financial situation for the neccesaties? how about burm food when it gets older? idk about you guys over there, but gas here is rumored to go over $4/gallon by saturday. dont get me wrong, i think you would be able to handle it, im just trying to give you some food for thought

Re: Should I buy her?
Well, I don't have a car at this point. I have very low expenses.. plus I just got a new, and very good job.
Like I said, I'd raise my own food. Rabbits are not expensive to raise.. and it'll be a year or so until it's eating rabbits anyway.

Re: Should I buy her?
yea, well just make sure your inb the financial situation for it

Re: Should I buy her?
Hey Shelby,
Those are some cute condas. But as cute as they are I would recommend starting out with your burm first. It sounds like you have allot of great experience with giants, but I would recommend getting a more "owner" approach with just the burm before you jump for the annies.
I don't know your living situation (and it is not any of my buisness) but It's best to start with one giant as you have to remember their life long care and caging comes into play, these guys can live along while, and do any of us really know where we'll be in ten years, heck in five even?
Breeding prey items sounds like a great idea and works for many people. But rabbits need much much more room then rodents. and their all around more expensive to care for with good husbandry.
I also read you would like to breed some of the bigguns and may count on that. If you'd like to breed that is completely up to you and no one else. But I definetly wouldn't count on bringing in enough money to break even or even profit for a good long while.
Just my two cents, please let us know what you decide to do.
Either way I'd love to see some shots of your new burm
Thanks
Rusty

Re: Should I buy her?
Hey Rusty.
I respect your opinion. I've thought about this quite a bit and I still want to get this snake.
I am not planning on going away to college, or doing anything that would require me to give up my snakes, so I am completely committed to caring for these snakes for their entire lives.
I have a large basement that would be quite good for raising rabbits. There are quite a few feed stores around here where you can buy rabbit food in larger quantities. It is quite inexpensive. My friend hobby raises rabbits, and I know she isn't spending a lot on them either.
These two big snakes are going to be pets. I don't plan on ever breeding burms (too many already!). I may decide to breed the yellow at some point, but not for awhile.
I realise it sounds like I'm taking too much on, but I'm confident that I can handle this. You can all shake your heads at me too, I won't take offense. ;)

eventually youll need a car though. not to be mean, but just cause you have a very good job today, doesnt mean youll have one tomarrow. and as for low expenses? theyll get higher. im only 18, and have a few expenses, but still know i need to budget myself. actually alot of my money goes to gas, saving up right now to cancel my nextel cause i get no service. gonna get me a verizon next month. anywho, im not sure how old you are, doesnt really matter, but just try to look ahead a lil bit. you dont want to have to part with one of your beloved pets because you cant afford it. it would be better to wait and see how it goes.

Re: Should I buy her?
I'm 18.
Yes, I'll get a car, but I can still afford the snakes.
The biggest expense with a snake is feeding it.. like I said, I'll raise my own rabbits. A pair or trio of rabbits can feed more than one snake anyway, so buying two rabbit eating snakes really doesn't make that much of a difference.

Shelby,
I think you should do whatever is right for you. You know what you can and cant handle. Good luck with the annie.

Re: Should I buy her?
From what I read ,you can handle it. What I can say is your lucky to have a cool job ,have 2 bloods, soon to be burm,1 albino king snake,2 Kenyan Sand Boas, 1 Mexican Black Snake,1 Hog Island Boa,1 rough Scale Boa,and maybe an Anaconda.
-
Re: Should I buy her?
If you're ready,go for it.None of us should be holding you down, she's very lovely.(She would be even lovelier if she could stay that size!)
-
Re: Should I buy her?
Thanks guys. I certainly don't want to get into any arguments.
I appreciate the concern though. Many people wouldn't be able/willing to handle it when it's big.
There'll be lots of pics when I come back from the show! Who knows what else I'll get. I have lots of empty cages..

Re: Should I buy her?
i didnt mean to sound rude or to try to hold you back, just trying to prepare you for what could lie ahead. i wanted a burm for a long time. alot of thought when in to it for me, and now, even though i really wanna blood, i decided to hold off simply cuz im not in tha situation for it. not saying you arent, but your still young, and have other neccesatys that have to be taken into concideration. eventually you wanna move out right?
im not trying to say your gonna fail with it if you get it, i know youll do fine with it, and hell, probly alot better than anyone else will. but sometimes it just helps if people "lecture" about it like this. i got it throughout my thoughts of getting a burm, and it helped me. so i figured, hey, maybe it will help you.
whatever you decide to do, i wish you good luck. i know you can handle it, and probly afford it, but life is unpredictable. but if you do get it, you better post ALOT of pics!

Re: Should I buy her?
Yeah, I did think a long time about it. I've been considering a yellow for a long time. Before now, it didn't feel right, but now I think this is the opportunity I've been waiting for.
Don't worry, many pics will be posted. She's about 3' at a year old.. slow grower, but she sure is pretty.
-
Re: Should I buy her?
Good luck with whatever you do!
-
Re: Should I buy her?
Ohh man.. you say she's tame, and she is also captive bred?
I am pretty sure the yellows do not get humungous like the greens, right? Hm.. if you feel confident about it, and are ready for the commitment, I say go for it. I know you're one of the established posters on here, you know your stuff.. :)
-
Re: Should I buy her?
I say go for it since burms actually can grow longer than a yellow. So since your getting a burm ,get a yellow.

Re: Should I buy her?
Sounds like me, once I get an idea--the negatives don't out weigh it-- :D
Go get it! Post'em too.
Off-topic: Burms seem to be taking over Florida, huh? You shouldn't have to buy a burm anymore, just take a trip to Florida... :psychotic
