keeping humidity down

last couple of days its been wicked humid in my area. Rainning for 5 striaght days and warm. to add on top of that i live in a basement apt. a few weeks ago i deleted my IR light and at first everything was perfect. my temps are right on so i dont want to go back to the light, but i know that the light will take my humidty down if i have too. i have lots of ventalation on my tank and i have tried opening it all up to get the air moving and have closed it up. it doest matter. my humidity in my apt is around 70 % and my tank stays around 70 - 75. my water bowl is on the cool side, and it also is about 1 1/2 " above the substrate because i use it as a hide as well. any hints would be great.

If it's just a temporary thing because of rains and high temps, I wouldn't even worry about it ... As long as your temps are 82-84 on one side and 92-94 on the other, you're set.

adam, i wasnt very worried about it for the first few days. but its been goin on for 5 days. just getting a little worried thats all. i know i know, us new BP owners must drive u veterans crazy LOL.

Don't second guess asking questions lol - you can never go wrong - it just means you care.

What are you using as substrate - depending on the medium it can play a role in retaining that humidity. I'd say fire up a dehumidifier if you had one (if you were really that worried about it) but I know the one we have kicks off a TON of heat when it's on to the point I wouldn't consider using it in warm weather (no central AC).

I've had a few enclosures I have had to melt extra holes in to get the humidity and temps tweaked - then closed them off when the seasons shifted. I would heed Adam's advice though - if it is just a few days and related to local weather conditions and topping out in the 70's I wouldn't sweat it too much.

smulkin, curently i am using a towel as my substate. i had the same thought that maybe i could try a differet substrate. what would be better? thanks

Not the case at all ... it's always better to ask questions, and I never ever get tired of helping as much as I can ... My only point is that a few weeks of high humidity isn't going to hurt a thing ... If it was something that was going to continue for months, I might offer some different advice.

But you've got what? 4 or 5 weeks tops until the Great White North gets bone dry and a lot cooler? I wouldn't sweat it.

well then, with that being said i guess i will not worry at all. being new to this i have heard so much about keeping the humidity levels under 60 unless the snake is in a shed or u will risk health problems. So i thouht that health issues would arise a lot sooner. but if i got a few weeks to play with, i can handle that. and yes, i cant wait for the snow to come. mayb i'll take some pics of phantom on my snowmobile.....in the heated garage of course. thanks again a bunch. i hope someday i can help out someday as much as u guys have.

Because of their slow metabolisms, a couple of weeks is really nothing in the big picture!

Just make sure the temps are good and the substrate is not wet. ;)

I think your snake will be fine ,but if your really worried ,get more Ventilation. or move the water dish father away from the heat. Also lower the water in that dish.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I keep small jars of rice in my gun cabinets and change them out about monthly. It helps keep the moisture out of the air and keeps my guns from rusting. However, from what I have read in the forums, humidity seems to be a good thing for most snakes.

hhhmmm rice eh. i have heard of this. yes humidity is a good thing but to much of a good thing is sometimes not so good.
