Need advice

Someone local to me is selling 3 - 2 year old normals. They are unsexed and they want $175 for all 3. Its a crap shoot for me. I dont need males at this point. Any thoughts?

Ask them to have them sexed and explain you dont want males at this point...

But if they have them sexed and find out they are female, then they become worth about $300/each...

Anyone local who could go with you to sex them?

Any idea how much they weigh?

If they did turn out to be males you'd likely be able to unload them in a few months time if they weighed in. Or you could just make a final offer - haggle the price down since unsexed. Is winding up with males the worst case scenario out of that for you?

I could sex them. I just dont want to tip them off to anything and have them change their minds. No idea on weight. The only thing that makes me nervous is they got one a year ago from a reptile show and two from a breeder. Odds are neither a breeder at a show or any other is just giving away his females. Males would not be the worst case scenario because i could unload them and get close to what i paid, but i would need to feed them. Its not a huge risk but i wanted some extra opinions. Thanks!

hmm, i had not thought of it like that... but maybe they have no idea and dont care... and just want to rid themselves of them... not sure what to tell ya to do in that situation.

yeah, its a tough one. She also said , they havent been probed which sounds like someone who knows terminology. Probably just me being suspicious though..

Yeah, she knows terminology... but really that does not mean she cares, she just may want to get rid of them, maybe weigh in the reason why she wants to get rid of them in making your decision... if you dont know, it never hurts to ask.

Well we'll see. I wrote and asked if I can sex them and no response yet. I'll keep everyone updated. I guarantee they are all males because otherwise they would have to know the value of a breeding size female. I am tempted to do it anyway just to find out.

I would venture to guess you are hitting the nail square on the head there. Kind of an evasive approach to take, sidesteps misinformation etc - a very good situation in which to play the skeptic.

yeah..Although i called Adam and his advice was to take the chance. Worst case is that they are all males and i sell them for $40-$50 each and take a small hit of $25-$50

So I have some more info. I am going to see them tomorrow after work and ill know for sure then but:

They are all 2003 babies and about 3 feet long. Seems a little small for a female, no?
They have always lived together. Will this cause breeding issues?
They still eat live . This should be fun to break them of.

As tempting as the whole thing sounds, I am just not sure...Any thoughts?

Are you bringing a scale? After you go look at them, if you don't want them, give me a call. Maybe we can work something out.

I definitely could bring my scale. Hadnt thought of that! Its not that I wont want them, but rather will they be females? Its the damn dilemma of whether I buy them or buy that nice hog pair that I am looking at that is ready to go this year. It cant be both....If I knew they were females, I would get them in a heartbeat and sell off one, to pay most of the other deal. Oh decisions!

Hey adam, I am going this afternoon to see these guys/girls. I am going to have to visually sex them to the best of my ability. It seems fairly obvious with the females having shorter, fatter tails and the males with longer skinnier ones. Also the males have the longer anal spurs. How accurate do you find visual sexing to be? I took all my adults out last night and it seemed fairly accurate.

In my experience, about 0%. For every male you see with a long skinny tail amd long spurs, I can show you a female with the same. I don't consider tail characterisitcs reliable in any way.

Well that puts me in a jam. I guess i will just see what they look like and how much size they have on them. Its a crap shoot.
