new boi didn't eat. [emoji852] he seemed spooked by the f/t, but he was on live, lights were on, so i get it. i'm not discouraged!

his feeder did not go to waste! Corny was more than happy to take it.

oh, and, you know, Coffee Bean is a bottomless pit it seems. she's also like, 2 seconds from outgrowing the small RBI hides.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...98e884892a.jpg

    You don't feed live?

I was thinking the switch should be gradual, especially with hatchlings/young ones?
Maybe try with the light off and just leave it in his enclosure for a few hours or maybe even overnight?

How much does coffee bean weigh? I don't know what size rbi hides to get? It is so confusing. Lol. Btw she is so damn cute. Does she still want to kill you?

nah, no live, never had the need as of yet. i've never done any type of "gradual" switch; it's either yes or no. everyone has said yes thus far.

i know the lights didn't help, but i wanted to see how well he's adjusted thus far. obviously he needs more time. no worries! he's obviously comfortable enough to sit outside his hide waiting for...whatever lol.

she's over 160g. based on my experience, i'd say small RBI hides will last to ~200g IF you're lucky. the mediums will last until ~600g.

Coffee Bean shows me love with her teeth. [emoji4] i've left her alone since our last handling sesh, so i'll be looking forward to our next one to see any progress!

My GF has an adult male thats around 1200g that fits in the mediums. He is too fat to get into the opening without lifting the hide up, but he is able to get under it without any problems. My male thats just under a year is at 500g and isn't even close to outgrowing the medium RBI hide. Unless maybe their sizes have changed over the years?

Either way, coffee bean is awesome! I think I remember seeing a post about her taking a strike at you. Has it happened multiple times?

wow, 1200g in mediums? i can't even imagine Yellow fitting in there, and he's at 900g. i'm sure the sizes haven't changed tho. Yellow has large RBI hides and has more than enough room...maybe i'll try putting a spare medium hide in his enclosure and see if he goes into it! Spaghetti still has plenty of room in her mediums at almost 600g, but i like to move them up sooner rather than later is all; that's just me. i always see part of Coffee Bean sticking out from underneath her hides, which is why i think she's close to outgrowing them.

oh yeah, Coffee Bean has tried to take, like, 7 pot-shots at me with 1 actually getting me in my hand, but most of those were when she was in shed and super not happy about being out. she mostly does it when i'm not holding her and she thinks she can get away with it. when she's in my hand she isn't so bad, just tense.

I understand moving them up a size sooner than later. I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, just sharing my experience with the RBI hides. I tried getting a picture of Jassper in the medium hide, but he is currently proving me wrong by wearing it as a hat lol

    Hopefully she calms down!! lol

hahahaha, that's cute. i love that name! you should add one more 's' so it's Jasssper HA!

i'd also love to see a pic of them in the hide; i need to see that for myself!!!

that's the only thing i don't like about RBI hides: they're so light weight. i wish they had heavier ones!

Could you do me a favor and take the dimensions. I can't seem to find the sizes when I look. It is confusing for the rbi hides. They either say large without dimensions or give dimensions without size. Sorry to hijack :please:

They do have dimensions on the RBI website. Large is 13.125"x9"x3", Medium is 9.5"x7"x2.375", small is 5.5"x4"x2.125". XL is 16.25" x 11" x 4.5" and is one of the only ones that specifies door size 4" wide x 3.25". My 1250g dude actually still even fits through the door of the medium though and fits just fine in the hide in general. The little weirdo eats any and every time I feed him but still managed to lean out last breeding season because he was on the move, so if he was chubbier vs more muscular he might have issues with the door. He's probably reasonably long for a boy too since I got almost 3' on that snake measuring app maybe a year ago and he's definitely grown since then. I don't think he's done growing so he might end up needing bumped up a size.

tl;dr - I have a big boy who is fat at heart and needs to stop begging me for food between meals but he does still fit in a medium. Srs Pipsy, I don't care how long you stare at me in "feed-me" position between feedings, I'm not going to make you fat. I'm just going to feel guilty.

thank you for this. i can't believe i've never seen anyone talk about hide sizing before in relation to the snake. now i feel bad for having Yellow in larges at 900g+ :(

i have spare mediums; i'm going to put one in his enclosure and see if he goes for it.

Haha, I actually searched really hard to try to figure out the right size and he still had to grow into it. Spatial things are just not my strength. I really expected him to grow out of it by now, but based on my amazon orders, nope, it's a medium, yes, it still fits. Reptile basics says ball pythons up to 700+g for mediums but nope, he can fit his butt in there just fine. It's certainly worth offering him the medium if you have it, but I doubt yellow's too upset about it. I didn't move mine up early because he likes squishing into it anyway. His first real size upgrade when he was a baby was after he couldn't fit in after a meal. I have a great picture of him with his butt in one hide and his face under another. I go with buy size upgrade early-ish, only swap in once they're wearing it as a hat and look ridiculous personally.

    i'm TERRIBLE at spatial recognition!
the reason i moved Yellow up was when he outgrew his old hides as well as the 20gal he starting hiding under the substrate and carpet i had in there (to the point where i thought he escaped and was missing...nope, just under the friggin' carpet). he didn't like trying to squeeze into the hides' entrance (exo-terras) so i got him nice, big RBI hides.

i do have spare mediums so i'll put one in there when i get home and watch him for the week to see what he thinks.

My ares did this same thing one night i came home from work, peeked in to check on temps and she was under her waterbowl, it was clear and spotted her easy but i was like WTH lol.

She is at 140g, she's thick bodied so as she's sliding in her small RBI hide she fills the hole and lifts the hide a little til she's completely in and she coils up to settle in, pretty funny watching it:D she will be getting a medium hide soon with her new tub when new RBI rack comes in.

at 160g+ Coffee Bean's lil noodle body is starting to poke out the back side of the small hides. i find them all askew every morning from her trying to settle in to them. she might just have to wait until she's over 200g before she gets new hides.

Spatial recognition, cutting straight lines, and directions are my downfall. Makes me sound much worse at life than I really am. Can't be good at everything.

Yes, the thickest part of her body is the size of the hole on the small hide, so she moves it around a little getting settled. If she's goi g straight into her hide when I put her back I kinda hold it in place for her til she's in haha.

She's going in to shed right now so she was wondering what I was doing lol https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b9f033aa32.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...82e8e607d4.jpg

Mine eats in shed, out of shed, summer, winter, upside-down (literally), chicks, rats, it doesn't matter - feed him and he will come. He tries so, so hard to convince me that he should be fed again for days after he was fed before he finally gives up. I don't get it and I don't know what it would take for him to actually refuse a meal since it hasn't happened yet.
