Welp.. I couldn't help myself..
The title says it all [emoji23] I couldn't help myself. Meet my little 65g emperor pin girl, Maybelle (May). We got May earlier today at a show. She's a beautiful little girl [emoji7]She is on live but I am going to try and offer f/t (Of course if she doesn't take it I'll give her live). She's got her whole 40 gallon mansion to herself! I'm sure my 2 ft Geno is jealous [emoji23]She's a little worm compared to him! And she's got a lovely personality. Here's some pics :) *Also, her tank top has 2 holes in the screen lid [emoji30] Anyone have any advice on that? Thanks! :Dhttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...cf6f82daee.jpguploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171008/18b9305eb583eb968fc9c4d3d2292813.jpg[/IMG]https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...ccc3fe9842.jpghttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...ab582d1376.jpg

Yeah she is beautiful :D Geno's in a 20 gal :)
-
Switch their tanks. She will be better in a smaller one and geno will be better in the big one.
-
Re: Welp.. I couldn't help myself..
Oh alright thanks! I'll do that tomorrow! My understanding was that she'd benefit from the tank that a bit bigger because she's a female and females typically get larger than males. But yeah I can switch them :P
-
That is true but she is a baby and needs a smaller space to feel more secure.

I get it :gj: I'll just switch them again after she grows a bit?
-
Yes, switch when she's bigger. And she is lovely!!! Such a sweet noodle. I hope she switches over for you.

Re: Welp.. I couldn't help myself..
Congrats on the new snake. I agree that you should put the smallest snake in the smaller enclosure. Good luck.

I'm confused here, but, by the time your female is big enough for a 40 gal wouldnt it make more sense to buy another 40 gal (or other appropriate size) instead of switching Geno back to a 20 gal? Granted this depends on their individual growth rate but by then wouldn't Geno have outgrown a 20 gal?

Well, I was thinking before I got Geno I needed a 40 gal. But I read males will be OK in a 20 gal because
- They generally stay smaller
- BPs arent too active anyway
And I made a thread about this before I got him and as quoted by craigafrechette: "A 20 gallon would be fine for a while, and probably forever with a male, but I prefer 40 gallon breeder tanks". So I just assumed it was ok? The 20 gallon was ALOT cheaper than a 40 gal. When I got May the 40 gallons were on sale and I just went ahead. I knew she'd probably need the 40 gallon her whole life. I can probably eventually get a 40 gallon for them both, I'll just have to save up :P So in the mean time, I guess I'll switch their thanks to were Geno's in the 40 and May in the 20. Then all I'll do is switch May to a 40 gallon when she gets bigger so they both have 40 gallons... does that make sense? But thats a great point thanks :D

Yellow was miserable once he outgrew his 20gal at ~600g. based solely on my personal experience with Yellow, a male beep can absolutely outgrow a 20gal. Yellow's change in behavior (refusing hides, food, and hiding beneath the substrate) is why i pulled the trigger on a T8. he could probably do fine in something a bit smaller, but for now it's all his and he's happy.
don't bet on your male staying small enough for a 20gal for life is the point i'm trying to make, that's all.
also CONGRATS ON THE NEW PICKUP!!! lovely lovely little girl!

Sounds like a plan :gj: I'm not sure if this is a global thing, but I seem to recall Petco has seasonal $1 per gallon sales. So when it's time to upgrade you can always look for sale dates and take advantage of some sweet deals :p
and btw CONGRATS can't believe I forgot to say that, May is so gorgeous! It's no wonder you got her, she's too stunning to ignore!

they do, i got my 40b's for my bearded dragons at half price, the next sale here for the discount price is end of october into november. might be a good time to check into it. I need another one for one of my beardies.

Re: Welp.. I couldn't help myself..
Alright. I switched them both today :D (I cleaned the tanks real good, I didn't just set them in lol) They're both on a table in my room. I taped some paper to the side of both their tanks facing each other. I didn't know if that'd make a difference, I just thought it'd stress them out a bit having them look at each other :). I'll try to get some pics :D Thank you!

Sales for the $1 per gallon only goes up to 29gal tanks and the bigger ones are 50% off. They changed it.

Not necessarily true. It's not the size of the space, it's the amount of cover and stuff to hide in or under that is what makes them feel secure or not. I had Dottie in a 40g breeder tank when i got her at 91g and she was fine. Just put in a few hides on the cool and warm sides, some silk vines, smallish PVC piping or small corrugated drain piping or even paper towel tubes although those will get messed up if wet. Anyways, Dottie did fine and ate like a horse. Funny part is i put her in a T10 with a shelf and she did awesome. Then i poached that cage for when i got my retic and put Dottie in a T8 with a shelf. She did horrible and quit eating although I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence being it was winter or if it was the cage. I put her into a T10 after i moved my retic into a T25 and Dottie started eating like a horse again. She pounds medium rats, multiple small rats, pretty much anything anytime now lol.

Personally I wouldnt bother buying a fish tank if you have a choice. Save up and get a PVC cage like an Animal Plastics T8 or T10 with a shelf. Much easier to control humidity plus much more secure and will last the snake its whole life. Fish tanks are for fish or a reptile in a pinch or in quarantine but not for a permanent home.
They aren't cheap but either is keeping reptiles lol. People told me it was cheap.....I've spent over $4000 in just caging alone and that's not counting all the Herpstats and other stuff involved.
