Questions about heat pad and thermostat

Hi guys, so I’ve seen a lot of different opinions about where to put the thermostat when using a heat pad, tonight I’ll work on my first tub and i wanna make things right, is it recommended to have it buried on the substrate, or is it better to have it direct contact with the pad?

What are the pros and cons of each?
What’s more convenient?

Any comments and opinions are welcome, I’ll be posting pictures of the set up when I get home and hopefully I can make a quick guide to help other novice Noodle owners like my self and make life easier, thank you in advance!

DON'T put it in the enclosure, as the snake could move it and then the temps would be improperly regulated causing possible harm. put it under the enclosure directly on the heatpad. When I first started I put it in the enclosure and had it taped down, I had it like this for months with no problems, but then I read how tape could come loose and the probe could still get moved, the tape could get tangled on the snake.... etc. So I will never do it again.

Hi guys here’s an update on the first tub, this is one of the two that I’m working on right now, so I followed Godzilla’s advice and I put the thermostat in between, I put a couple identical hides, bowl another hide and fake plants, what do you guys think?

Has anyone had any issues with reptile basics not getting hot enough? I’ve had it on for a couple hours and the hot spot is not hot at all :/

For some reason the reptile basic heat pad that I bought isn’t strong enough to heat up the tank to a nice warm area for noodle, the temp gun barely marks 78-80 on its max :/ any ideas on what to do about this?

Heat pads dont work well with substraight. Its really only heating the bottom of the tub. Your best bet is to just have bare tub/paper towel under the hides. In my opinion anyways. The heat pad would have to be an unsafe temp in order to get a layer of substraight to the correct warm side temp.

Yeah, my heat pad didn't really do much for my enclosure. While I had it I had the area it covered on paper towels only; the rest of the enclosure got regular substrate. I didn't really like it though, both for aesthetic reaons and just for practical reasons. The heat pad wasn't raising ambient temps, simple as that. I ended up modding my tub for a CHE with a UVB light, which provides a day cycle and a basking spot beneath the CHE. If you're interested, I followed this guide.

The link goes to part 3, which has the links for part 1 & 2. It's really easy to do provided you're willing to get the proper materials and put in the time to dial in your temps (which you'd be doing in a bare-bones setup anyways).

Also, your enclosure is stunning! I'm loving that climbing vine and the plants everywhere! Your to-be BP will love being able to move around while feeling secure in that. Good stuff. Thumbs up.

EDIT: ALSO noted that you could simply mod it for the CHE part and skip out on the light part if you like. I just enjoy giving that extra enrichment.

Place on the outside of the tub between the heat pad and tub. Always take the temp reading from inside directly on the tub under the substrate.

You can add air flow to the room. Mine is at 68 to 72 most times. For shed all I have to do is turn the ceiling fan off.
