Frank - The Blue Tongue Skink
I got Frank in February and he was a little over a year old.

He's doing great, although he may be brumating a little as he has been borrowed in and not eating much for a week.

He's healthy otherwise and hasn't lost any weight.

    He's about 620G.

I had a Bearded Dragon, George, for 11 years. He was awesome, but so is Frank.

Much easier to feed Frank and he has a ton of personality too!

Wanted to post some new pictures of Frank. He still looks like Frank!

He's full grown and about 2 years old. He brumated a little this past winter and refused food around shed time. However, he only lost about 5G the whole time.

He has been about 620G for a while now and I feed 2X a week. One meal is ferret food, veggies, a little fruit, and sometimes a little freeze dried mealworms and dubai roaches. He eats as much as he wants. Then, about 3 days later, usually over the weekend, I feed wet dog food (just a little bit), ferret food, and veggies. I also give him calcium w D3 and a multi vitamin. The dog food covers that up so he eats it happily :).

I had tried feeding more, but he would pick at it, or leave it. He seems to happily eat when I feed every 3 days or so.

Thank you in advance for looking. Frank is full of personality and a great member of the family.

Not a ton of info out there on BTS. If anyone has questions, I have done a lot of research. I am by no means an expert, but will be happy to try and help.

A few new pictures of Frank! The first one is Frank with Katie's hand next to him. She's the Frank/BTS whisperer. She can hold him for a 1/2 hour and he just chills with her. I try holding him for more than 5 minutes, tops, and he's all over the place.

Of course Behira (our BCI) is all over the place when Katie holds her, and totally chill with me. So I am the Boa whisperer I guess!

Yeah, just a normal Northern Blue Tongue! However, he is full of personality and beautiful, even as a normal.

I got him about a year ago and at about 1 year old or so. He's done great with me. Katie loves him most of all the reptiles. He's awesome with her, as I noted, but only okay with me, despite the fact I clean up for him, feed him, etc. It's always, "Katie, Katie, Katie!" It's good though. I think he's awesome too and he got Katie more comfortable with the smaller lizards we have (Geckos) and the snakes! If not for Frank, she might not have given everyone else a chance when we were discussing and then moved in together.

He's been about 620G for about 8 months now. He was 475G or so at a year, I believe, and can check my records. At 1 yr he was a little bigger than some of the other BTS that were available, and I had a big tank now an even bigger tank!

I got him BHB. I have had good luck with them and Brian. They had a bunch of CB year olds that they decided not to keep for breeding and sell instead. He was very well started and adapted really well.

If/when you get one, make sure to ask questions and do research. Not much out there on these guys.

Humidity: room temp is fine except in shed. I soak him 1X or 2X if he has trouble. However, usually about 35-40% in his tank. They don't particularly like more than that. 30-40% is a good range.

Temps: 95F or so hot spot works really well for Frank. 80-82F ambient and 80F cool side. I have a RHP and UTH for the hot side and that keeps that half of the 6X2' Boaphile no less than 84F, averaging higher during the day.

Why? Basking lights! He likes to bask and needs UVB. In my setup for him, I have a 60W basking bulb right next to the RHP and adjacent to a fluorescent UVB bulb.

When not basking, eating, or laying waste (almost daily - lol), he likes to be in a hide or under his paper substrate. They like to borough but hard to keep humidity down and keep the tank clean with anything other than paper. He goes regularly and is kind of messy. So, I crumble up the printless newspaper into balls for the cool side/non basking side. He loves to borough into them and under them. He also likes his hides and getting in the hide under the paper is his favorite.

When not digesting and getting ready to poop, he spends most of his time on the cool side of the tank. Hidden. LOL.

Finally, they need a varied diet. REPASHY sells a gel diet for them, which I use sometimes. He loves protein - snails in particular. However, he needs: 50% veggies, 10% fruit, and 40% proteins. You know what has that exact breakdown and he loves? Ferret Food! Pellets!

I wet them in water for a few minutes and mix with fruits and mostly veggies. He also likes freeze dried fruit, veggie, and omnivore mix, you can get at pet stores or amazon, etc. from Zilla, I believe. I moisten up in varying quantities and mix with the pellets in water for a few minutes, then give to Frank. He usually eats everything up!

Fresh fruit and veggies are great too. However, since the pellets are balanced as is, I do not give as much fresh fruit and veggies as if I was trying to create a balanced diet without the Repashy BTS diet or the Ferret Pellets.

Once a week (which for Frank is every 3rd feeding or so as I feed every 2-3 days a smaller portion) I mix in a little wet dog food with the above mix and sometimes add his snails and/or boiled chicken, etc. When I do this, I mix in his once a week vitamins. Calcium powder and reptile vitamin mix powder.

Feeding less often, he is more active, eats everything instead of picking what he likes the most, and maintains weight no problem.

Finally, they like space! He uses every inch of his 6X2X1.5'. He loves to walk around, find different temps, different hides, explore, etc. Never had a reptile as active as he is. They do not need height in their tanks, but you need room for UVB, so something to consider. All my 6X2' tanks in my apartment 5 tank complex are 1 foot high, except Frank, he is 18 inches, because he needs the UVB and basking.

Okay, a lot there, but I have learned a lot both before, and after getting Frank. I had a beardie for 11 years before Frank, and wanted something different. Katie also loves that he's a scavenger and doesn't eat anything alive or a rodent, LOL.

What a good boy! He is super cute. I have been worried about the size of my northern but he really does look just about the same size as yours.

Oh the humidity subject, is the place you live very humid? I am able to use aspen with out it becoming too humid. I sometimes have the opposite problem tbh -_-'

My guy is also very reluctant to eat his veggies. Are there any veggies in particular you have success with? What is the brand of ferret food you give him? I was doing the Merrick dog food diet with supplemental veggies for a while but its kind of a hassle now that I no longer have a dog. They only seem to have big cans in stores around here which means I have to portion it out and freeze half of it.

Where I live is not humid in the winter (I have to put extra water dishes in for my BP and BCI), but can be very humid in the summer. I live in Connecticut and the reptiles are in a finished basement. I use a dehumidifier in the summer, and heat in the winter, but never seem to get the optimal balance.

BTS do not like a lot of humidity, so in the summer, between opening the side vents I have on Frank's Boaphile tank and having his lights on, it works out. In the winter, it's closer to 30% in there, but he doesn't mind that either.

They are very hardy though and small, and/or temporary, gyrations are probably fine.

Do you weigh your BTS? How old is he? If he's an adult and maintaining weight, I would be happy. If he's young and growing, all good. They do have a hefty midsection relative to their tiny legs! However, if healthy and eating right, don't sweat it too much.

Regarding food, I put links below (from Amazon - but you can get all different place - just easy to link to one place). The ferret food I use, is not grain free, but the dog food I use is. They put a lot of filler in wet dog food unless it says "limited ingredients" and/or "grain free." I have 5 dogs, so they finish off what Frank doesn't eat! Zupreem makes grain free pellets as well, but I am not sure the benefit, expect they want more money. The ratios of protein, fat, etc. are the same.

How often do you feed? I feed less often and he tends to eat everything. I also mix the pellets and the veggies/fruit all together, so he doesn't have a choice, if really hungry. If not, he tends to be picky. I find feeding less often for an adult means they eat it all instead of picking out exactly what they want! I do the same with the wet dog food.

They are pretty smart and like what they like. When I first got him, I fed more wet food and protein as he was growing fast. However, he stopped eating the pellets and veggies almost completely. PITA! So, by feeding less often and only using the really juicy proteins (wet dog food, snails, chicken, etc) once a week to mix in vitamins, he eats his other meals (pellets, veggies, etc) much more often. He doesn't hold out.

I have heard and read from breeders, and other keepers, that a ferret pellet diet and/or the Repashy BTS food, is pretty complete. I still give veggies, fruit, freeze dried worms, roaches, etc. and snails. I want a well balanced diet as much as possible for Frank. I also don't want it to be too boring.

That is a lot of great info! I've been doing some off and on research for the past year. Nothing really serious because I know that will only make me want to get one sooner. Space is the biggest factor for me, so I would not purchase one knowing I couldn't provide a proper enclosure.
The reason I asked if he is a normal is because his colors look awesome. For what ever reason, I envisioned the colors looking a lot more washed out and brown but these pictures have changed my mind! BHB is probably my number one contender as far a breeders go for these guys if/when the time comes. I watch Brian's videos fairly frequently and, while I understand some of the criticism he receives, I think he does a lot of good for this hobby, especially when it comes to "casuals" like me.

Thank you. I am 90% sure he is normal. However. Very red and healthy, which helps coloraration.

    I will double check.

Kudos to you for waiting until you have space. He really uses his whole tank!

As requested, and with the help of a) my new macro lens and b) frank staying still, here's a good shot of Frank and tongue!

He's a little faded as he looks like he will shed soon. However, his tongue is bright as ever! Sorry there was a shadow blocking part of it! I'll try harder next time :).

As suspected, Frank shed over the past two days. He seems to shed every 2 1/2 to 3 months now. Not sure what "normal" is since he's my first BTS, and he just got full grown about two sheds ago, but I'll keep everyone in the loop.

He had a little stuck on his back today, but a quick soak got it right off.

Shedding must have been exhausting, because about a minute after putting his favorite food in, most of it was gone! I am not sure if he got more on his face or in his stomach :).

I will post pictures soon, but want to let him chill the rest of today.

    He sure looks handsome though!

As promised, here are pictures of Frank fresh off shed. No special lenses this time, just Frank being in the spotlight.

He weighed in at 650G today, after waste, but ate a lot yesterday. My new, better scale, had him at 620G after brumating, so I am open to the idea he has gained a little weight. I think he looks good, and am feeding evert 2-3 days so he actually eats his food instead of picking at it. I'll keep up on that, but am not concerned.

I have a Merauke blue tongue for over a year now. When they get around this age, shedding slows down from a few times a month as a baby to once every other month. Mine started to shed every other month since December.

You don't really need a scale like you do with snakes to confirm if they are overweight or not. Really easy to tell for BTSis if they look more rectangular in the body, it is time to cut back the feedings. A good weight will show acute oval shape, from neck to tail. It is hard to get them to lose the weight so starting the diet early helps.

I would suggest at this age to cut back feeding its meal once a week. You can give it veggie treats if it will take it without meat throughout the week or snails if you have them. Mostly veggies to meat ratio like bearded dragons. Your BTS will always act like it is hungry, don't worry, it won't starve itself. In fact, they can go without food for weeks or even months. The meal portion should be no bigger than the size of its head, but since veggies have no calories, feel free to give as much as he will take.

Re: Frank - The Blue Tongue Skink
I've been spreading out Frank's feedings a little more than before - more like every 4-5 days now instead of every 3-4.

I weighed him today after eating 3 days ago and two big poops. He was 630G, down from 650G. It could have been when I weighed last time, he had eaten recently, just drank, or needed to go. That was a big jump from 620G previous weight.

I am going to keep on eye on it. If he starts losing weight, I will up food, if he's stable, I will stay on this schedule. He seems happy and healthy as can be and looks the same.

I've been giving Frank a normal meal every 5-7 days and a vegetable rich meal every 3-4 days (so he will have two full meals in a 7 day period, but one normal meal with 40% protein, 50% veggie, and 10% fruit, and one 70-80% veggie). He had been getting up there in weight, although still healthy. Since I changed his diet, he has been between 630G-645G (hard to weigh empty because of his eating schedule). However, he has stopped gaining and seems to be maintaining around that weight. He also eats his meals when offered, instead of picking out what he likes the best.

Overall, he's doing great. He tends to be a little moody with me (not always, but often :)), but not aggressive or anything. However, he still loves his momma the best. Doesn't he know who feeds him?

Here are two pictures of him and Katie. He sat on her like this for about 20 minutes.

Frank went outside today, essentially for the first time ever!

He seemed to enjoy the sounds, warmth, and smells. He had his tongue going a lot, especially when I held him. Very curious.

Got some good pics! He's doing great. He's maintaining his weight and I've been working with him more (handling and feeding). He was never aggressive, but sometimes shy. A lot of that has dissipated. Katie loves holding him and feeding him. So we, collectively, have been handling him more, and I, in particular, have worked on hand feeing with him. He will happily eat in front of me now and will come over from the other side of the enclosure to eat wet dog food or, his favorite, a snail, right out of my hand!

Frank did the cutest thing today! First, he ate his big meal for the week with plenty of protein, veggies, fruit, and vitamins! He also ate dog food out of Katie's hand again! It's becoming a regular occurrence. He's really chill now.

Secondly, he decided to bask on the cool side after eating, where there are two hides. He likes to push things around so they are how he likes it! He managed to get on top of the two hides, head on one, body on the other, and arm hanging in between. Freaking adorable!

My apologies for the poor picture quality. iPhone through acrylic with lots of light in cage. Not ideal. However, I didn't want to open it and risk him moving. He's already giving me the evil eye :).

I am sorry, but I can't stop! Frank is awesome! Plus, in case you didn't notice, I like to post pictures of my reptile buddies!

Seriously, I had an awesome Beardie, George, for over ten years before he got really sick and I had to put him down. I loved him and he had a great personality.

I wanted something a little different with my next medium sized lizard. Plus, Katie has enough issues with the Geckos eating medium mealworms and Dubai roaches. She especially hates the roaches, :). I almost wasn't able to move in because of the "bugs." With all the live protein Bearded Dragons need, that was going to a be a no go!

Frank eats veggies and ferret pellets and canned dog food with an occasional canned snail as a treat. He's a scavenger. Katie loves that about him and even feeds him from her hand. I gave him a Dubai roach once. He chased it around the tank, ate it, and then has refused every one I've offered since. I believe he thinks it's too much work to hunt for food!

His personality is awesome and he's very expressive and docile. His care is easier than a Beardie temp wise (hot spot 95-100F under basking and UVB light, 90F hot side, 85F ambient, and 80F cool spot - all can drop at night), food wise (scavenger so eats everything but doesn't need live food and he only eats 2-3X a week as an adult - although he does poop almost daily :)), and he's a ground dweller, so he doesn't need elaborate climbing wood pieces (he does need hides and likes to burrow though).

Not as many morphs of BTS, to say the least, but he's a normal and he's awesome and beautiful, with the cool blue tongue of course!

If you have the space, I highly recommend BTS!

Alas, my bearded dragon used to like to burrow too! I guess they do burrow for sleep & safety in the wild, and I accidentally discovered that
whenever 'Spike' was out of his cage that I could put a shirt or towel over him temporarily (like if my phone rang...) and he'd instantly take a nap
under that blankie! I don't know if all dragons will do that, but I thought it was adorable & hilarious that mine did. When I uncovered him, he went
right back to full-awake "play time", lol...

But I chose this house partly because it was smaller...if I have more space, I do tend to fill it up ;) & right now I have 2 dogs & 16 snakes, so I really
DON'T have space right now. (-unless...do I really need that stupid couch? I always sit in my recliner...SEE what YOU DID!?)

Until reading your posts, I've never known much about BTS....you've totally made me want one now. :P:P:P:P:P Thank you though, seriously!

Your beardie sounds like he was awesome.

FYI, BTS use very inch of their enclosures and need a lot of space.

Frank is in a 6x2’ enclosure. He uses all of it. I think 5x2’ would work and bigger than 6x2’ is probably a waste. However, a 4x2 would probably be too small.

I'm all for giving animals space for normal active behaviors, so I'm glad you encourage that too. :gj: I hope that anyone you've "inspired" to get a BTS
will take your advice on cage size. (I guarantee that I will..."if & when...") This whole thread is very helpful & enticing with all your info & descriptions.

Frank is doing great. He turns 3 years old in September.

He's been eating 2X a week for a few months now and maintaining weight. One meal is mostly veggies and a little fruit and some Ferret Pellets.

The other meal is similar, but I give him a bunch of protein as well (snails, wet dog food, chicken, etc.), and mix in vitamins and calcium.

He eats the majority of his meals now in full, as opposed to when I offered more frequently, when he picked at his food and ate just what he wanted/liked the most.

Here's a link to a video of him chowing down today on his mostly veggie meal: https://imgur.com/ZpjsrR3

    Yeah, Frank eats well!

The key with BTS is diversity and not too much protein in their diet.

To be safe, I give him a multi vitamin and calcium 1x a week with his protein rich meal.

The ratio thats best for them is 50% veggie, 40% lean (land - no fish) protein, and 10% fruit.

Frank ate his first pinkie yesterday (F/T 2-3G pinkie). He absolutely loved it and it was down in 4 bites!

Link here: https://i.imgur.com/o8WRNRZ.mp4. My apologies for the poor quality; I was using an iPhone.

Today, Frank got pet and sat with a not so reptile lover. She's not really afraid, but a little. She touched Shayna (BP), but didn't touch Behira (BCI), or Figment (Corn). She actually held Solana's (baby corn snake) back half, which was a big step.

Frank finished shedding last night. He looks good. Really bright and vibrant colors, not like last week in Dullsville.

He gets cranky when he sheds so I pretty much leave him alone unless he has trouble and needs a soak.

He managed to shed pretty well, but also push his printless newspaper substrate all over the place and pee and poop multiple times on the floor of his cage. Thank you for that Frank!

Took a good twenty minutes to get everything right and clean in his tank today. However, as stated, he's happy and calm now, and looks great!

Frank is doing well and is up to about 660G. He seems good and eats 2X a week (about every 3-4 days). However, I am putting even more vegetables and fruit in his weekly "lower protein" meal. It's about 20% ferret pellets and the rest is veggies and a little fruit. The other meal has a little wet dog food, or snails, or an occasional pinkie.

Frank ate today and I got a couple good photos and a nice video as well.

LOL! Yeah, Frank is a trip!

He's usually pretty calm, but he lets you know, in a nice way (usually evil eyes), if he doesn't like what you are doing.

Most of the time, he just chills though.

Frank doesn't get much love on here, but we spent some quality time today.

He's doing great and is mellow as can be (as long as you support his body). Being a ground dweller, he's often afraid of falling if not supported. He doesn't try to bite, but is strong and flails around.

Here are two pics from today:

Yeah, morphs are starting to appear now. He's a normal, but still beautiful. He's got a ton of personality!

If you get one, keep in mind they need a lot of space for their size and higher heat and UVB for their hot spots.

Can't blame him for instinctively not wanting to "fly thru the air". Snakes can hang on better, but even THEY like to be supported & sheltered next to us.
Poor Frank, losing some attention to that new little gecko-tyrant!
