    How to Tell Quality
    Hi guys.

So I've been talking to a couple breeders here in Norhten Ontario and I'm just waiting to hear back from them regarding shipping.

I'm looking for a male clown, and one breeder has one, and the other has about 5. I'm just trying to figure out which ones are the highest quality, but I don't have any idea how to tell that in clowns xD

I'm just getting him as a pet - no breeding in his future. So I'm just trying to determine who's going to retain their colors/Look the nicest as an adult.

Is there something specific I should be looking for? Or is there someone I can pm with the pictures I have? I don't want to post the breeders pictures publicly on the forum without permission from them.

    Thanks :)

When it comes to clown quality is really in the eye of the beholder, while no matter the clown you want to look for a brighter animal, when it comes to the pattern it will come down to YOUR personal preference.

I for example do not like busy clown and prefer reduce pattern over them, some people do not.

When you pick YOUR animal it really needs to be based on your own standards of quality and beauty.

A brighter base colour is usually better though? When I look through pictures of adult clowns, some seem to really fade/Brown, and some seem to hold some contrast and colour much more.

Personally, I'm a fan of a more reduced pattern, but the boyfriend prefers busy, and I'm trying to accommodate his tastes to help him get excited. Part of him is still very resistant to paying over 300 dollars for "A pet rock" haha.

Could I possibly send you the pictures I've been given by the two breeders and ask your opinion on the better choices?

If not that's fine, I'd just like the opinion of someone who knows what they're talking about lol

Torn between 1 and 2! Love the blushing on number 1.

And okay I'll post them. I was just worried it would be against the rules since they aren't my photos, or animals I've put a deposit on or anything.

    Hope this is alright!

my fav is #3. i dig it's pattern and colors. it also looks like it has a blonde mustache lol.

#4 and #5 have really consistent patterns and bright blushed, cool heads.

#6 from the second breeder has a nice reduced patern and dorsal.

i like reduced pattern Clowns but i think #3 has a bit of both. a melted busy pattern meets reduced pattern. also a blonde mustache!

Pics 4 and 5 look brighter and have more "tear drops" which I like on clowns. I prefer a more reduced pattern though and some people like more busy animals.

Keep in mind that color depends on lighting and what camera they were using also, so not all photos depict the right color and not all monitors display color well.

Brighter animals tend to not brown out as much, but it can depend on the genetics behind the animal too. If either breeder has a gallery with pics of the adults that produced these babies, that will tell you a lot.

I would mainly pick based on pattern since color is so unpredictable.

I think all of them are great. Pick the one maybe that is eating the best and likes to be held?

Boyfriend and I have narrowed it down to pic 3 or pic 5.

I like the reduced pattern on 3, but love the blushing and brightness of 5.

I'm loving three! Boyfriend is set on 5. He thinks the reduced patterns are boring -.-

Five does has some nice blushing... Maybe I'll bother Tim and see if he would take a couple more pictures of those two.

Thanks for the opinions guys :)

I didn't even think of feeding habits! Ask about how they are all eating, if they are eating what you want to feed (f/t or live?) and also for weights. If you are stuck between two, bot with the best feeder of the two. Feeding is the must frustrating part of owning a BP, so going with a good feeder will save you a lot of frustration later on.

Agreed, a confident snake is a big part of it. I like busy myself, pastel clown female is what I'm after atm...

They're all on f/t, but I'll definitely check who's the best feeder.

I was 100% wrong! They're not on f/t yet. So I put down a deposit and he's going to transition pic 3 and pic 5 and I'm going to take whichever one is the better eater :)

#5 from the 1st based on your circumstances. But I prefer reduced clown so breeder #2's is the one I'd pick.

Edit: Yeah, figured it'd end up being 5.

I really like the pattern on breeder #2's. Bryan dislikes it though and everyone is saying bright is better.

On top of that, breeder #2 hasn't responded to my messages for three days, and Tim (#1) has been responding regularly so that sort of swung it for me.

    Super excited though!

There was a beautiful sub-adult blade clown available when I first started looking. Great price too. I would have loved him, but Bryan hated him -sigh-

If you are judging solely by appearance, then it is all a matter of preference... some people LOVE banana pythons, and coral glows...I personally think they look ugly. Just me. I'm sure that some of the snakes that I think look awesome some other people will think they look boring.

Its not about "quality:, beauty is purely subjective and resides in the eye of the beholder.

The matter of quality comes in when you are judging how they'll maintain their vibrancy as they age though - at least that's my understanding :)

I think they're all absolutely beautiful. But since I have a handful to chose from, just makes sense to me to get the opinions of those who have experience with the morph.

Blade/Clown is definitely up my alley in terms of aesthetics, but definitely agreeing its all personal. Why I expected #1-5, since it seemed like a good compromise animal compared to MY idea of a good clown like this.

Yeah, that makes me drool!! That's pretty much my ideal clown. Honestly though, I love all clowns - hell I'm just excited to have a ball python again. So compromising on the pattern is totally okay with me if it gets Bryan excited about it too :)

He's new to snakes. He likes our corn snake, but he's never really been around ball pythons so he doesn't understand how different they are. I think once the noodle is here, and he sees how beautiful it is in person and handles him and such, I think he'll he really excited.

Long way of saying I'll like it either way, and it's worth it to make him even close to as excited as I am.

That clown is gorgeous though. Is it yours, or just what you'd look for if you were in the market?

Look I'd be into, from the WBP "Clown" page. My thing is very reduced patterns, even if they're on normals/wild types. Funny since mine is a Pinstripe from a rather busy patterned Jigsaw sire, rather than a very clean one. But I wanted an animal with a good personality for my GF's sake, since she's just starting off like your BF. We both love hognoses, but I didn't want something that musks, puffs, and plays dead as her first snake, so Pollux's morph was a non-consideration.

Still between these two boys :)

Deposit has been paid, just waiting to see who switches to f/t better! I'm still leaning towards the first, but Bryan prefers the second. It'll just come down to who'll eat frozen because there aren't any live suppliers here.

I'll be sure to start a progression thread as soon as I know which one I'm getting! I think we've settled on Midas for a name.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...eeebce614d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...414d6310ee.jpg

Nice looking tub setup. BTW, you might want to get some bulldog / binder clips or luggage straps to help secure the lid further. I use them on all of my tub setups to make sure no one escapes. :)

Hopefully the breeder will switch one or both over to f/t soon so that you can get your new snake.

Thanks! I do have clips for it, but right now it's so tight I have trouble opening it xD
Once it get worked in and loosened up I'll probably use them.

I spoke with Tim last night and they both took a f/t meal no problem. He wants them to have one more before shipping. I asked him for weights, hatch date, and another picture or two of them to make my choice.

So he arrived today! He's beautiful in person. I of course forgot to take pictures of him before we put him in his new home. He's a teeny tiny 78 grams though! I'll start a progression thread in a few weeks (or if I break down and take him out for a few quick intro pictures)
