How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
Okay I leaned that you shouldn't feed you Ball Python in its cage becuase when you reach to get it so you can handle it , it might recognize you hand as food. If you feed it outside of you cage it won't think that whenver something warm go into the cage you can eat it.
The problem is you can't handle your snake after you eat or it might regurgitate.
Also just some info on me. I know I sorta appeared out of nowhere and gave help ,but the truth is I don't have a snake yet. I know alot ,but my parents won't let me have them. I seriously have tried everything short of threatning.
Also how do you prevent the substrate from getting in your snake
If you have any suggestions it would be appreciated (even if I have tried it before:P ).

I'm not sure how this thread got a 4 star rating when there are no responses?

That's not true.

Moving your snake carefully is fine.

So feeding in your cage is alright and does not attribute to aggressiveness.
BTW- I added the stars . On other forums it says you can't add stars to your own thread. I just wanted to check sorry:D

Re: How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
you only have to worry about your BP recognizing your hand as food if you dont reach in there often. unless you keep it on a loose substrate, then you dont need to take the snake out of the enclosure. i feed both my boas and my burm in cage without a problem. i also use newspaper, so no worry of the snake eating the substrate. i would have aproblem if i fed them out of the cage, as you dont wanna see any of them after feeding, they look at me like food.
no, you cannot handle your snake for at very least 24hrs after they ate. ideally, you want to wait 48hrs. when my snakes eat a big meal, switch to a bigger size, or just have a nice hefty lump, i give them 72hrs to digest. thats just a thing i do though.
to prevent your snake from consuming substrate, just dont feed it on loose substrate, or just dont use loose subsrate.
all i can say about your parents is dont quit trying. i always wanted one and my mom always said no. i didnt stop and looky now, i got 2boas and a burm lol. just try to show them that their not all that bad, their not slimy. try to show them that your really dedicated to them. and dont ask them to pay for anything. lol that wont work. try to bring them to a petstore, and show them the snakes. try and get an employee to get one out so you can hold it. just be sure to explain that the conditions kept in the petstore is crappy (most are, not all though) and be sure that if you can get one, to get it from a reputable breeder.

I'll second their opinions. I feed all 9 of my snakes in cage without a hitch.
As far as convincing your parents.. did you impress them with your extensive snake husbandry knowledge? Did you offer to pay for everything? Insure them that you would take care of everything (ie not getting 'tired' of the snake and making them feed it/take care of it for you)?

I fed 100+ ball pythons in their cages, on aspen chips for many many years without a problem.

yea, but there still is a possibility that it could consume the substrate, didnt say it will.

tried ALL of it. I went to pet store and handled a ball python. They know almost as much as me since I told them so much. I told them I have room and I can afford everything.
They just no its icky and ugly. They keep on telling me to give up. I have gotten grounded for insisting what they call "alot". I still want one. I seriously don't know what to do to prove myself. I think it is also unfair since my brother has a dog which he didn't pay for and doesn't take care of him . He is near my age yet he gets a pet. I also had a cat at one point and took perfect care of him , he was evil though. When we gave him to a pet rescue agency it went straight to the founder and even she gave him up. This is part of why it gets me mad. Sorry if I sort of went off ,but I had to get this off my chest. *releif*(is that spelled right)

yes,yes and yes. They know I can take care of one. I proved it when I took care of my cat.

Well.. just keep being obsessed with snakes.. lol hopefully they will take pity on you and give in at some point. If not.. then you will be very knowledgeable about snakes, and when you have your own house, you can have whatever you want.

Re: How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
Well I'm the parent of 4 kids hon and 2 of them want their "own" snakes so even tho I love snakes I'm not giving them a free ride either. Here's our deal (btw they are 11 and 14 years old).
My son age 14 wants a male Nelson's Milksnake, his 11 year old sister wants a female Albino Nelson's Milksnake. Eventually they might even wish to breed them.
In order to get their snakes this is our deal with them both:
1) They have to do proper research on these snakes and join a decent forum where they will act respectfully and ask reasonable questions about their research.
2) They will save up 50 percent of the costs of purchasing the snakes, shipping the snakes and setting up seperate enclosures for them. The other 50 percent will be gifted from their step-father and I.
3) They have to feed their snakes and handle them responsibly, respecting the snake's limits.
4) We will cover the feeding costs for their snakes, in exchange they will clean all snakes cages, theirs and ours. We will cover vets costs which they will pay back with chores or small neighbourhood jobs.
5) If the only reasons they want these snakes are..."they are cool" or "they are pretty" then the answer will be no for now. Pretty and cool pass quickly, a long term interest in the snake is what we want to see them express first.
Mike and I feel that Luke and Beth are ready for their own snakes with guidance from us but they need to show us they are serious about this and it's not just a passing thing.
Btw, bugging one's parents endlessly ends up with the wrong result. I'd go with just being consistent and mature about why you want an "unusual" pet and your ability to care for it in the long term.

Yeah, I remember in my youth (never thought I'd be old enough to say that! LOL) hearing "if you ask ONE...MORE....TIME.....the answer's NO!" and boy did they ever mean it. Man was it ever hard for THIS chatterbox to keep her mouth shut if she really wanted something not to ask "one more time"! LOL

Re: How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
Just out of curiousity, how old are you? I know it was completely impossible for me to purchase a snake when I lived with my parents... there was no WAY mom was letting me get one. She still refuses to talk about it now... she tells me it's stupid. But I waited until I was in my own place and paying my own bills cause I wanted to respect her boundaries. She still, however, thinks I only have one when, in fact, I have two with two more on the way. I wonder how long I can hold out on THAT little lie...? Probably not long... I HATE not being able to tell my mom everything!

Re: How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
Oh just a thought here. If you do end up getting a snake and your parents want nothing to do with it, what will happen to the snake if say you go away on a school trip or something? Or it gets ill and the vet bills mount up? It's really hard to a younger person to assume full responsibility for any pet if their parents aren't willing to be that wall to lean on sometimes.
My 14 year old son also would like a large spider. At this point, we've said no as I'm unfortunately gut scared of them. It's not fair to the spider (even if I can't stand them) for it to be in a household where if Luke was away from home, I'd be so scared to approach and care for his pet or know what to do with it in an emergency.

Re: How the heck do you feed "Plus some other stuff"
Well, to me, it's just common sense. Yeah, it's not fair that your parents don't enjoy the same things you do. But they pay the bills for the house, and it's just respectful not to bring something in that they don't like or are terrified of. I mean, if you were terrified of dogs, would you want someone bringing a dog into YOUR home? Yeah, it sucks being a kid and being dependent and having to do what your parents tell you... :( Just wait and see how much it sucks being an adult and independent and having to pay for all the stuff you want... :P

No way in hell would I want to try and move Monty after a feed - that 'gimme more' gleam in his eyes scares me a little. :)
