Red or blue light at night?
I am currently using a 75W red light at night to keep the ambient temps from dropping. I have noticed though that he rarely comes out at night when the light is on. Should i switch to a blue moonlight bulb or something simliar, maybe that wont stress him out as much.

I would recommend not using a heat lamp at all at night.

Do you use a UTH (under tank heater) connected to a thermostat?
BPs can see red and blue light so using heat lamps at night actually can cause a lot of stress. I used one for a little while and my BP wouldn't come out at night. As soon as I switched to the UTH he seemed more comfortable and now romes around as he pleases.

Yes I use a UTH on a thermostat, but the ambient temps drop down to around 71 at night. I can't afford a CHE right now so I'm just looking to make it the least amount of stress on him.

i think i mentioned using a CHE in another thread of yours as they don't produce light.
i'm not sure whether beeps can see those colored bulbs or not, which is why i chose a CHE.

EDIT: you just mentioned why you don't have a CHE above. i say just stick with the bulb you have and save up for the CHE.

    Got it.

I suppose then blue must be a bit better than the red. Obviously a CHE would be the move when you can afford it, but for now I would go with blue light. What kind of enclosure do you have? Is it possible that there is too much ventilation from either an AC, fan, etc.? I have had issues keeping temps up at night but the lowest I've dealt with is the 75-78 range so nothing too terrible. Please keep me updated on what you decide to do! Best of luck bringing the temps up at night!

i made an edit to my previous post. don't worry about it right now, but i'd save up for the CHE to ease your mind. :)

Exo terra with the top covered in tin foil with enough space for the light to sit on the mesh

Seems like you're set. I would listen to tttalyor and just purchase a CHE when you can!

When i do get the CHE, what will be the best way to check on him at night without the use of lights/bulbs?

i just use a flashlight or turn the room lights on. he'll be fine with a quick check.

We've gone back and forth between red and blue with my son's snake he's had since June trying to find the right combo to keep temps in the right spot then switching back when the bulb we settled on burned out prematurely. Even with all the changes his snake is well assisted, eating well and still very mild mannered.

I use red heat bulbs for several of my snakes and they all seem to eat, shed, and poop just fine.

Will the CHE be fine on a dimmer or does it need its own thermostat?

a thermostat will always be the better option, but personally i use my CHE on a rheostat (dimmer). rheostats work best in rooms with stable temperatures as they do not adjust to changing temperatures. if the room your enclosure is in has stable temperatures it'll work just fine.

would the normal temp drops at night still be considered a stable temp room, I have my dimmer plugged into a timer right now
so it is only on at night time anyway.

I would just flash a dim light in there or find some sort of light without direct shining (ex. A flash light under a glass of water or just shining the flash light in.) a quick glance at night shouldn’t be too much harm as long as its not for too long, just a quick scan.

how much drop are we talking? my room fluctuates by ~5-7° over a 24hr period and the CHE + rheostat works very well for me, but i took the time "to get to know" the dial before i started relying on it and i have to adjust it in the morning and evening.

lowest i have seen it get was 71 and that was from 79 the night before so about 8˚ in roughly 8-9 hrs

if you can adjust the dial once or twice a day i'd say it would be fine.

All i would need to do is dial it in to hold the temps and let the timer do the rest. The sun usually is enough to keep the temps up during the day
