I've joined some Boa Constrictor FB groups since a lot of the old sites are down or otherwise dead. It's nice that there are some really nice and knowledgeable people there. But OMG there is way too much toxicity. So many super elitest know-it-alls. Even when those folks are right on the information they come across as rude and harsh and you don't want to acknowledge them out of spite.

Glad there's at least this tiny group of folks here who aren't jerks about stuff.

i don't use facebook nor do i go on many other forums, but i feel our community lives up to its tagline: "the friendliest online community..."

everyone is welcoming and actually tries to help and be informative. i can only imagine what facebook has become nowadays (i deactivated over 5 years ago)...it's nice to come here and get away from the "noise".

Facebook isn't the issue, that's just the medium people are using to spread their vitriol. It's the moderation and policies (or lack thereof) by the group admins that sets the tone for each group.

I lurk on more forums than I would ever join partly because of that issue.

Was reading through a thread on a tarantula forum the other day, and the old hands were complaining how newbies use common names for their spiders, and somehow worse, they will use both the common name and the Latin. God forbid, a newbie mistakenly capitalizes the species part of that binomial. A few pages later, the thread devolved into a free for all making fun of people for their Latin pronunciation.

Wow. I felt like we should be holding delicate tea cups with our pinkies extended.

I see a lot of drama on the FB sandboa group I read. I agree with bcr229 about policies and moderation.

I deactivated my FB account about 4 years ago and haven't thought about re-joining once. Too much drama and BS for me. My brother and my sister-in-law send me any pics of my niece that they post, so I'm not missing a thing.

deactivating facebook has been one of the best decisions of my life; it used to be a huge trigger for my anxiety. my mother is always like "you need to be on facebook for family!!!"

...y'all have my number! text me!!!

This is the only reason I'm still on it. I have 17 friends, all family and people who are really close to me. No groups, no community bull. Even still, can't stand it.

Most huge social networks like that are toxic cesspools. The world would be a better place without Facebook.

I'm on most of the boa FB groups from morphs to pure locality stuff. I dont find it that toxic. I mean sure you run into idiots like a guy i spent an hour arguing with who was trying to tell me unless a BCL has the cross headstamp, it's not a pure BCL and that Vin Russo and all those guys are hacks who breed mixed bloods and that Stockl is the only true boa god lol. Well after proving that Vin Russo was actually the one who discovered the BCL species and that even Stockl line stuff doesnt all have headstamps and that the parents of my BCL are from Vin Russo 2010 striped litter and Legacy Reptiles, he couldnt find anything else to try and prove me wrong so he started cussing lol. So i kind of stooped to his level and we got in epeen match over quality of animals with pics(I won btw but i wont go into that ;)), i ended up just putting him on block.

So you will run into people like that. It's the internet, you are always going to find keyboard warriors. Heck the guy didnt even use his real name, he used Roland Deschain, the main character from Stephen Kings Dark Tower series. Just ignore them and block them if they bug you. You will find knowledgeable people on there who do help but some nights, they will just feel jaded and tired of having to repeat themselves over a question that has been asked a million times and should have been researched wayyyyy before even bringing said animal home. My favorites are 'I got this boa and i dont know what temps i should keep it at' or 'I just got this boa and i dont know what size food i should feed it'. Those kinds of questions should have been known or asked at time of purchase.

Now you will get the know it alls too. I pretty much take anything said on the internet with a grain of salt. There are a few people on each FB group that i talk to and trust their knowledge but like i said, the rest i just more or less nod and then quietly decide if they are idiots or knowledgeable lol.

Now Retic Nation does have a lot of epeen waving guys which is why i rarely go there anymore. Retic Republic is a lot better. Seems a lot of the mellower folks are there. But overall, for boa FB pages, I generally lurk on Boa Constrictor Keepers, Boa Constrictor JB, Pure-Locality-Boas and Boa Constrictor Constrictor but i do flybys on the other ones lol.

I have found most people are morons and FB seems to be a cesspool of them. I have attached myself to some very successful breeders for info and guidance. Everyone else is just white noise...

I just made my first FB page a few weeks ago are there any good groups any one would recommend?

    Pure-Locality-Boas
    Boa Constrictor JB
    Boa Constrictor Keepers

The third has the most members and traffic, I mainly use it for research (search function) rather than day-to-day posting. The first I read daily as it's mainly eye candy.

I'm in all those groups but I mainly just browse. A Like here or there and the rare comment for a very nice animal. Life is too short to get bent out of shape over the comments of the internet elite.
