New to the BP world

Hello all. I plan on buying my first BP September 10th at a breeders show in the Toronto, Canada area. I will likely be setting up the enclosure in the next week or two. I will be using a plastic container set-up for the first couple of years as it will be easier to control the temps. I also have been reading that BP's feel more comfortable in this type of setting. And after that maybe get a nicer enclosure. My question is should I be going with a 27 L container? I would like to buy a younger snake but have no clue at what age/size they start selling snakes at. I believe if the breeder knows what they are doing it will have fed hopefully a few times. I hope that these questions don't seem to dumb as I want the BP to be comfortable during this stressful time. One last question what sex of BP is better and more docile?

27 liters is ~28.5 quarts. that's definitely appropriate for a hatchling/juvenile. i've got a 32qt set up i'm using for my next hatchling/juvenile. just make sure the tub isn't tall and has more length than height.

gender does not affect temperament. they're all individuals.

The biggest difference in sex is price and size. Females will generally cost more(not always...depends a lot on morph) and will grow larger.

I'd suggest a tub that has more width / length vs. a taller one. Make sure it has enough room for a water bowl, two equally sized hides, and still floor space to crawl around.

I would go with a female, not due to temperament, but I've read that males can tend to go off food more when they start reaching sexual maturity. Because of that, I have been purchasing only females...I also wanted snakes that got a little larger as adults. The females are more expensive, but not overly so with most morphs.

If you can get a copy of the vendor list from the show, do Google searches on them and look them up on the BOI (board of inquiry) on fauna classifieds site... You want to make sure you are buying from a good breeder / seller. I would also suggest buying from an actual breeder, vs. a "flipper" or large store operation. Not because flippers (re-sellers) are inherently bad, but because you will get more detailed information about the snake and its' background from a breeder.

When you do go to buy, ask a lot of questions..also look at the condition of the animals and make sure they look healthy (not too thin) don't have stuck shed, mites, etc. I have purchased all 3 of my BPs at shows but have seen some in bad shape at shows as well.

You *may* have to sign up to search on fauna...I can't remember if I had to or not. Also Google searches will sometimes turn up a link to a fauna BOi thread. There is also an inquiries forum here on BP.net... further down on the forum. You can do a search on this site and / or post in that forum if you want to know peoples' experiences with a breeder.

Forgot to mention that with a tub, you will want to also get some binder/bulldog clips or a luggage strap to help secure the top. Sometimes the "flaps" that secure the lids don't do a good enough job. A soldering iron to add extra air holes comes in handy as well.
