    New Ball Python
Hi i am getting a new baby ball python tomorrow. it comes with a 20gal long a heat light bedding water dish hide and him for only 80 bucks plus a lid.and maybe the ball python manual. i dont no if its a male or female but i will have it probed.he eats live pinkie or fuzzie rats. i want to try him on f/t right away is that ok? or should i do one live then try f/t or what?

Personally, I would buy one f/t rodent and one live rodent for the first feeding. Thaw the frozen rodent and offer it to the bp first....if the bp takes the f/t, kill the live rodent and put it in the freezer for the next week. If it does not take the f/t rodent, attempt the live feeding. This would be a good way to go the first couple of weeks just to get the bp established in your care. If it never takes the f/t, get it eating consistantly on live....then try all the 'tricks' to get it switched over to f/t. You can search this forum...there is alot of info here.

Congratulations! You will also need to get an under tank heater and another hide (one for the cool side and one for the warm side). We can't wait to hear all about him/her!

right now i am checking the temps of the heat pad he or she will use. should i also use the light. if i cover 2/3 of the lid with tinfoil then with like plastic rap or something to reflect the heat back down and to help with the humidity. do you think that will work?

I am not too sure what you trying to accomplish here. Are you trying to raise or lower the humidity ? Covering the lid will ofcourse help to increase humidity but using light will tend to burn out any moist within the cage.

i am trying to increase humidity and the ambient air temps. it most likely will have low humidity and low ambient air temps because its a screen lid.

I'm also a little confused because on another thread you talked about getting two balls and setting them up in racks, but now you're using an aquarium instead and just one snake?

because i found a really good deal so im only getting one snake and setting him up in the cage he comes with.

Covering most of the screen is the way to go to keep the humidity. Im guessing you are getting a glass cage, therefore you might have problems keeping the ideal ambient temp. Ceramic heat lamp is probably way to go, but i would first try out with the uth and then check the temp.

20 gallon isnt that big and you just might able to pull it off. Also there is a DYI humidifyer in the article section, you might wanna check it out. If i were you tho, id just tell the guy to leave out the cage and get only the snake. Its cheaper and replacing bulbs gets really expensive, you better off with rubber maid with uth.

I'm confused .... Who probed it for you? .... They told you it was a male and you think that they don't know what they are talking about?
