2017 Gender Poll!

Some of you wanted a new and refined gender poll so here one is!
This is not for what gender snake(s) you have but what you are as a keeper :D
Is it still a male dominated hobby/forum? Let's find out!

I'm a female (and only a teenager). I only have one snake and don't think I'd ever be a breeder but I've wanted a snake since I was about 8 years old [emoji23] and I'm so happy to be part of the community :)

Normal doesn't mean boring! [emoji4]

Male obsessed with snakes ( the wife tolerates the 21 snakes ) but thankfully my granddaughter LOVES my snakies :)

I'm going to bet 60% dudes and 40% girls!

Female with a growing collection and desire to breed one day!

Female here and want to rescue all the sneks that are mistreated. Don't want to breed at all. I just have my girl but I'm sure more are coming lol

I guess we're a pair, but since I do most of the care over Dom I'm going to put female :D

Male keeper here - one pet (for now)! Kids both actively interested and involved in keeping, wife too!

Female keeper and prospective breeder, 10 snakes and counting with a great boyfriend who loves them as much as I do.

Also I wonder if there is a fb snake group or BP group just for ladies?

Someone should make one!

I'm very pleased to see that the active community on this forum now is 60% girls and 40% guys haha. Given that "reptile keeping" is usually stereotypically attributed to men lol.

I am shocked myself. We still have the year left to see if numbers change.

I wonder if there's an underlying reason? Women being more likely to post/register? Women more likely to be the ones keeping ball pythons? Maybe men are are less likely to take polls?
I know I've seen a *lot* more women involved in the hobby since I started almost 20 years ago, or at least, being more vocal about it. Both on forums and at reptile shows.
I don't know the reason but also found it interesting.

I don't know if I just didn't notice before, but even when I first joined the forum 2.5 years ago, there were fewer women/girls than now.

It is interesting!

I'm a woman, Snake women and Danger Girls are both female oriented facebook reptile groups.

It's funny, I had a saltwater group get together recently and that comes up sometimes as it's also usually considered a male heavy hobby but our group is mostly ladies. I'd say of reptile people I've met or known it's been fairly evenly split. Anecdotal obviously.

I think you may be right .... maybe men aren't as keen to give their online vote for whatever reason .... - I said that in a manly , gruff voice :)

I'm a guy, but my 7 yr old daughter is also getting into reptiles. She is really likes leopard geckos. She has been my sidekick since day one. She used to help me in the fishroom when I was breeding a lot of fish.

I am a woman with 9 ball pythons. I am working on breeding :)

I am male however I am terribly outnumbered in my house (wife and 2 daughters) so technically by answering male to the pole was inaccurate. The wife has no interest in snakes but my daughters love pretty much all creatures, except roaches. They would rather take on an armed intruder than a roach.

Female! My boyfriend loves my snakes too but I started it all, did all the research, take care of them, ect. He just likes to hold them and feed them sometimes lol

I've always felt like there were quite a few women on the forum and I've seen quite a few ladies at shows, although it seems like there are more women making purchases at shows now.

That's one thing that seems to be changing too, at shows anyway. When I first attended reptile shows, some vendors literally would not talk to me or acknowledge me standing there, as if I were not interested in spending actual money on a snake. I would have to get their attention, as they passed me by to talk to guys who walked up after me. Now they are more quick to ask me if I'm interested in an animal. I like it.

Granted I am young, and I haven't seen much change since this is my first time keeping, I am a female and have noticed quite a fair amount of other girls who are into the hobby also. It's quite interesting! In fact, the only people who have not shown any interest in my ball python after showing pictures were all males.

1.0 here. I vend at shows and it wouldn't surprise me to see a near 50/50 split. Doesn't seem to be more of one than the other from what I've seen.

To avoid any politically correct issues, the poll should probably ask for our sex.

...and speaking of which, life would be easier if there was a dating site for reptile keepers. Occasionally, I'll be talking to a girl and I get to the point where she asks me what my hobbies are.....and I honestly answer.....only to never get another response LOL!

That's such a good point ... my wife just 'tolerates' my collection of 20 snakes which isn't really an ideal situation ..

The results were somewhat even, 47.32% of us are guys and 50.89% are gals. And 1.79% Identify as something else at the time of this comment. How interesting!

Oddly enough in my experience visiting women / young women are far more interested in my collection of snakes than any of the male family and/or friends .
The younger members of the family under 18 seem equally at ease wether male or female !?!?! Can't explain why or even what it suggests though .

More often than not - females are more interested and eager to hold snakes wheras the male visitors seem either completely disinterested or even terrified of even going near one of the display vivs nevermind going into the the reptile room :)

Same here! More often my girl friends are both more interested in snakes. And more often, the guys either have a fear of snakes or just less interested.
