Worth $100 dollars? First Hognose
Hey guys! I'm panning to buy my first hognose. I contacted a few breeders and this is what I found that I liked.
red het lavender ($100 + $30 shipping) from JMG Reptiles:

Normal 66% het lavender ($125 + $50 shipping) from Ginger Bred Hogs. I might talk him down to $100 possibly!

I have no idea if these are good deals. There were a couple hognoses and my last reptile show but there were only 3 total. I feel like this is my best bet, but maybe I should wait?

They are full of character. If you think you're ready I say go for it. They are fun to have.

Get one! I got mine a couples weeks ago and he is so funny and small! I'm getting another one next week since I love them so much!!

Hoggies are awesome little animals. I absolutely LOVE mine!
I would advise talking to the breeder and making sure the snake is eating well and eating F/T already if that's what you plan to feed. They can be tricky to get started eating, as a matter of fact I got mine as a "rescue" kinda (long story) because he wouldn't eat for two other people. Since being in my care since March he hasn't missed a meal and is in great shape!

If you're not breeding you're paying extra money for hets. I don't follow the market for hogs but I got a male het albino last year for $50. Awesome little guy full of personality

Yup, forgot to mention that about hets.
And yeah, these little guys have TONS of personality!

If you intend in breeding the make is a really good deal considering it is het lavender, the female I would pass, if your intent is to breed get a 100% female.
Poss Hets can be fun to prove but I would only ever consider doing so wit a visual male if I were you.
And if you are looking for pet there is not reason to pay extra for something you have no use for (hets), you can find a male for $50 and a female for $75

Thanks everyone!!! I would love one of these little dudes but they are definitely very pricey and I probably would like to hold one before buying. I'll be patient and wait for the next show!

Good thinking! They are awesome little snakes, but I think it's a good idea to wait and handle a few. Try to handle a juvenile and an adult if possible. Something tells me after handling a hognose you'll be bringing a hognose home.
If your mind is set on a morph of some sort, yeah, they can get pricey, but a normal is very affordable. I personally think you can't go wrong either way. You should be able to find what you're looking for at an expo though.
Keep us posted!

JMG produces quality hognoses and is a great a guy. A hognose is going to be around for more than a decade as long as they are healthy so when I look at a snake, I don't let the price deter me unless it's something out of my budget because that snake is going to be with me for a long time. If it's an investment, that's a long term investment. If you like what you've found then go for it. Hognoses are hatching right now though so you may see more at the next few reptile shows.

did you ever get your hog? If you like Colubrids they are cool. It is a snake that will hiss, head-butt and act like it hates you though, and they have a slight odor cause mice isn't there natural diet, but if your cool with that they have cool personalities. By the way that is not even close to being expensive for any snake. That's the bottom of the hobby pricing. Putting a price on a living creature can be tricky it's something that will rely on you for every possible need for up to over 20 years sometimes so it's important to get the one you really want even if you have to wait and save. Either way wish you the best!

100 is the absolute lowest price in the snake hobby. Very far from expensive, if you like colubrids you will like hogs. They will hiss and mock strike and act like they hate you and can have a slight odor due to mice not being their natural diet but they have cool personality for sure! Good luck

They're cute as hell but as usual nobody mentions the little elephant in the room :)
Sadly Hoggies are "rear-fanged" and are mildly venomous . Everyone reacts different to bits and stings but it's best to know , surely .

I decided to wait until the next reptile show near me..which is this Saturday :) last time I saw these cute hoggies for $50!! I hadn't decided I wanted one at that point so I missed that opportunity, but I'm hoping they will be there or more this time. I heard that there should be so I'm excited. The one I saw there looked like an axanthic (sp?) Which is why I wasn't sure about the prices online. They are definitely much more expensive plus the shipping adds up! I also would really really love to hold my future pet which is why I waited. I definitely feel in love with JMG reptile's hognose but maybe he'll still be there if I find anything at this show. I'll definitely be getting one soon and if so I'll let you guys know!

Haha I definitely have done my research! Plus I've watched every western hognose YouTube video that exists. I am not a 🐝-sting fan but I'll risk it for one if these sassy-pants. I can handle any sass after having my territorial corn snake 😅 what a lil butt

I had a male hog that I had to rehome due to feeding issues... The breeder said he took unscented f/t, which he did for about 2 months when I got him home... Then he went on a months' long hunger strike. I tried everything... scented with every possible thing that was recommended. In the end, he would only take live and only rat pinks or mice. IMO, if you want to get a hognose, get a well-started (i.e. juvie) female (I've heard they tend to feed better than males) that is feeding well on f/t unscented from tongs. I loved my little guy, but dealing with the feeding issues just stressed me out too much. He is now in a home that breeds live mice and rats for him, so is doing a lot better. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone with an older female.
