please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
am i right in thinking that this is definitely a male?

this is a 2000 gram snake. why would it be freely everting itself this way and allowing me to evert it with relative ease? it's not really popping that i'm doing here (i don't really even know how to do that)--its more like, i hold up its tail and it kind of just lays out the goods for me.
unfortunately, this is also a snake that i bought as a female several months ago. ( :ohmygod: ) i have been feeding it as many rats as it will take every 6-7 days and wondering why it hasn't been putting on girth. don't get me wrong, it has gained quite a bit as it eats like a pig, but the whole thing made me suspicious. and now this little....um, problem...

I am not really sure 100%, but it looks like a boy to me, however, I could be very wrong. But it does seem odd that he/she would let the goods hang right on out willingly.
ADAM! Calling ADAM!
So, if it is a boy, is there any recourse you can take with a breeder? Or are you out of luck?

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
If it was sold to you as a female, chances are it probably is. The hemipenis in a male at that size would be WAY larger than that.
Thats my .02 anyway.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
My advice is to go have your snake probed by a herp vet. This should answer all your questions (Is it a male/female, and why is it just hanging out, ect ect ect). I'm not by any means an expert but on the males that I have seen their is usually a white piece of skin that is attached to the pink sides showing so I'm guessing that it is a female. Here is also a vet link that may help you determine the sex: http://www.pythons.com/probing.html. I hope this helps

that's a little...disturbing.
i hope that sass and forrest are right and that it is, in fact, a female. i did some searching online last night and found this which is what really made me think that i might have a male. that is very similar to the way that my snake (norah...norman?) looks when it everts itself. the hemipenis/unidentified bulges do come out a little more than shown in my pics--it's a bit hard to hold the tail and snap the pic at the same time. in any case, we have an appointment scheduled to see the vet first thing monday morning so hopefully that will clear some things up.
as for what i can do if it does turn out to be male, i'm not really sure. i haven't contacted the people i got her from and won't until i know something for sure. i have two other females (i hope) from them as well and have so far been very pleased with them. they seem like really nice people--they do some breeding but i believe that a lot of the adult snakes they sell are ones that they acquire from other pet shops, people that don't want them anymore, etc. i think they would be willing to work with me but since it has been 4-5 months or so since i actually bought this snake i'm not really sure. but no need to worry about that until i find out for sure what the sex is anyhow.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
No hemipenes in that picture, but it doesn't mean that they are not there. They are just not hanging out! From those angles it's hard to really see anything. FWIW, hemipenes are dark dark dark red ... much darker than the exposed tissue in the pic.
Lots of ball pythons will just evert all of their "junk" out at you when they're pi$$ed off. It's common.
Sorry I don't have a definite answer.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
well my vet appt. got moved to friday so i still don't have an answer there either. is there any other reason they might evert themselves like that? norah has never seemed angry or upset for any reason (not to say that she never has been, just not that i can tell). she is actually my most outgoing, calm and friendly snake and an extremely easy keeper--always eats, regular poops, regular sheds, pretty much predictable in every way. she is the snake that i take out for people to hold because i trust her not to have any weird moments and strike or get jumpy.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
Well very wierd you started this thread and tonight while I was handling Baby our 6 month old bp (or slightly older) she/he just suddenly everted. I was just stroking down her tail area and out her stuff popped! Then just as suddenly...blink...back it went in!
It looked kinda like your picture...just lil pink thingies (yes Adam that's the scientific term for it :P ) Never seen either of my snakes do this and nothing was different in my interaction with Baby tonight other than....
I'VE BEEN FLASHED BY MY SNAKE!
LOL

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
i am back from our little trip to the vet and it turns out that my worries were for naught. norah is, in fact, a female. (pshew! and yeeeah! :) ) and there is nothing wrong with her "parts."
-
Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
Geeze I bet Norah's relieved to hear that too! :)
Glad to hear you still have the female you thought you'd purchased hon!

snick (the albino) is doing great! he's a fat little rat eating machine. :) he's up to about 850 now. he will hopefully be making very close friends with norah and another big girl (ashe) i have later this year.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
Those are good shots mlededee.........not what everyone wants to look at all the time but good candid shots.
Adam made the call.....you can't tell for certain from that pic......those aren't hemipenes. But I guess you already found out you have a girl from what the vet told you.
Did you at least get to watch the vet probe her......that is something you have to see to understand how it is done.

You get to wear their musk too if they are really freaked. It is such a great smell :puke:
When I was a kid I used to wear garter snake musk like it was cologne........:imslow:

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)

i watched him do it but i'm going to request a lesson next time i go. (we have a check up in 30 days for the stomatitis.) i'd like a trained eye to watch me the first time i give it a go to make sure i'm doing it right.

Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
Oh sweetie he's so gorgeous! Lovely contrast between his colors too! I'm soooooooo jealous!
Ball pythons musk? Now why didn't I know this! I knew other snakes will musk you but quite honestly didn't know b.p.'s could also do this if upset enough? I assume they have some sort of musk gland in their vent do they? Interesting.
~~Jo~~
-
Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
yes they do have a musk gland in their vent.
-
Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
thanks jo, i love my little snick! :P
ball pythons have the same musk glands that most other snakes have but it just isn't as common that they actually musk you. a lot of that is because they are pretty laid back and somewhat lazy creatures. if you look here you can see where this male has released some musk while being popped.
-
Re: please confirm that this is a MALE (warning: somewhat graphic pictures)
Yewwwww that looks like nasty stuff! Glad they aren't prone to musking!

Uh, were you very popular with the ladies back then? lol
I got musked by a BP awhile ago; it was not as bad as a garter. It was a terrifed WC adult at a pet store :(
Mle, that is def. a female? I would have to aagree; my female looks like that when inverted. Hemipenes would be a bit darker and bigger/yuckier looking :) Learn to probe; it is very useful.
