New baby!

Never thought I'd get a boa but here is our new girl! Her name is Alice and she is less than 6months old from what ive been told, shes 52grams. She was an impulse buy... a local pet employee was holding her and ive never held a baby snake and i did and now shes mine lol!

Im not to versed in different boa species but they said she is a Colombian Boa... i am most definitely preped for a bigger snake, just ordered a t10 for my bp and going to get at least that for Alice within the next year.

Looks like a BCI just some very nice coloration! Probably a normal I would impulse buy on too:)

She's a beauty alright! Colombian boas are Boa Imperator, the most popular species and for good reason. Usually very healthy and hearty with great dispositions. Average size will be around 7 to 8 feet, somewhat heavy bodied, but all dense muscle. Now i wouldn't worry about getting a big ole' cage just yet, if you keep her on a healthful feeding schedule it will be 4 or 5 years before she gets anywhere near that size. Congrats!

Maybe ill order with a divider and get another snake lol!

Her head looks like a BCI, but her tail looks like a BCC. You should try to find out for sure. Either way, she's a beauty! There can just be a pretty huge difference in adult size is all. But, yeah... It will be a long time before she is ready for an enclosure that big. Great idea on just getting another snake while you're at it, though! You must be as bad as I am... lol

Best they could tell me was colombian. This is our second snake... but my wife is a bad influance so more snakes are inevitable lol!

She's not our first snake and had been planning on another in a few months anyway just not a boa. I understand where your coming from but give a guy the benifet of the doubt. I dont anything half assed once I've made a commitment.

The easiest way to tell the difference between BCC and BCI from the saddles. The BCIs have oval light spots while BCCs have central spikes of the dark part going into the light.

The central spikes are called peaks. To clarify, some Bi may sometimes show peaks and some Bc (specifically Peruvian locals) don't always have peaks.

Having a good history on any boa is always ideal that way you know the lineage. And yes, there are general characteristics (like peaks, saddle/tail saddle shape, number of saddles - Bc tend to have less than 20 but again, it varies) that can be used to tell them apart. A trained eye comes with experience and years of simply looking at them (at least in my view). Also price, as a verifiable lineage Bc may run $300/500 and up. Colombian boas are also called common boas because that's what they are and generally a pet store boa is going to be Bi.

Some people have crossbred the subspecies in trying to create new morphs (like roswell, most likely the fire/diamond and others) or simply to bring in the brighter colors into their Bi lines. Hypos are a locality cross of Bi (Panamanian x Colombian). Again, verifiable lineage from trusted breeders is the way to go if that stuff is important to you (you as in anyone that is buying). It is to some, it doesn't matter to others.

Not true. Peruvian BCC can have pinched saddles.

At the OP- your snake looks like a BCI to me. Babies can have bright red tails but it darkens with age. Here is my 5 year old Colombian girl for example who had a bright red tail as a baby.
