    Hygrometer frustrations
OK, so I thought one of my girls hygrometer was off so I switched them into the others enclosures to see if they were working. They were still acting wonky and didn't seem right.

I went on the Spyder robotics site and ordered 2 of their temp/hygrometes and am running them alongside their old hygrometers. They are reading between 1% to 5% different than the old hygrometers at times and the exact same at others.

So, do I assume that they are working fine? A 5% margin of error is ok? I try to keep them between 55% and 65% when not in shed and 70% to 80% when in shed.

I think it's close enough. I never have luck getting any of my thermometers/hygrometers to agree. If they're in the ballpark that's good enough.

Yeah, less than 5% error is normal.

I spoke with Dion from Spyder about their humidity sensors and he told me they calibrate them with Zikar hygrometers. He advised me to save some money and buy from Zikar. Zikar is good out of the box according to him and Zikar customer service techs.

Tasks everyone. The adults remain at a 5% difference but the baby's is 74% and 82%. Um........ (it's super humid today, so hers shot up but that's almost a 10 degree difference in the same tank.....)

Do you mean these? Is this what everyone else uses?

The ones I bought from Spyder, they said "aren't theirs" they just carry them. So, the new ones I have from Spyder have been calibrated with the zikar ones? (The link in my last response.)

We found a cigar shop in the that has the rectangular Xikar hygrometers, so we will pop by and grab 2.

Popped in the Xikar hygrometers. 60's. The pets tore and spyder robotics ones were off by about 10%!!!!!!

To get the humidity to 70% for her shed, we've soaked some moss and placed it around the doors to her hides, and misted fairly heavily. So, the bedding she's on 99% of the time in her huts is dry but the rest of it is pretty damp. Not wet and dripping, but definitely damp.

This is what I use in 3 of my enclosures

The extra unit just to double check them periodically because I am so OCD

I was using the accurite when I first got started and noticed a similar difference when I switched to Zikar units. I'm very pleased with them thus far and have had 3 perfect sheds from both of my snakes. Just got the 3rd snake so hopefully my attention to detail with my husbandry will prove to be good for the new one as well. Good luck to you as well.

is that what you would suggest using to measure hot side cold side and humidity? I have read a lot of forums and did a lot of research online and still havnt found anything that I feel I should order. I want something that I am not worried about being way inaccurate as I am ocd as well. at night time before bed I check on my BP atleast every hour until I fall asleep to make sure he isn't getting to cold at nights. I wouldn't say that price range is a huge deal breaker for me but I also don't want to spend $300.

I have it on my "cool" side by the door and have my Herpstat set at 82. My ambient temps are between 78-80 - sorry I do not have a better picture but you get the idea (this is in my Caulkers Cay boa enclosure). I use Animal Plastics T10's and Pro Product RHP's in all of them. The Ball python is doing well, eats like a champ (I feed in separate enclosure) and I've gotten full sheds every time. Overall I'm very happy with the Xikar units, I also have them in my gun safes.

I've had perfect sheds from all 3 of my snakes as well.

There are a couple reasons I went with Xikar - it's awesome in my humidor, my cigars are always perfect - when I called Herpstat to inquire about using their hydrometer probe when the Accurite unit I was using gave me temp and humidity swings between 5-10 points. Dion at Spyder Robotics told me to just use a Xikar unit as that is what they use to calibrate the Herpstats - I get accurate readings in my gun safes - price isn't crazy, I believe you get what you pay for.

    Hope that helps
