I keep coming back to look at these pictures because holy hognose! A 20 egg clutch?! I'm looking forward to being able to breed my group but they won't be ready for a minute since the females hatched in 2016. Is she eating a fuzzy or hopper once a week?

Yep 20 which is a good number hopefully a few holdbacks in there.

That girl eats either 2 small adult mice a week or one large adult a week, right now I m alternating with an occasional rat fuzzy to build her back up a little.

I'm looking forward to seeing what hatches. Now I don't feel like giving this new adult anaconda a hopper is too big.

It's a matter of size usually I start feeding hoppers when they are about 80 grams or so, this girl is usually in the 300 grams range (a bit less right now but building back up fast)

    Awesome clutch there! I can't imagine having 20 huffy noodles. [emoji7] [emoji7]

I just received my female hognose yesterday. She's 51 grams and the breeder says she eats fuzzies. I can't imagine my bebe at 300 grams. I'm excited.

Nice Deb! Amazing production from that female. I can't wait for my gravid garters to start dropping. We can't wait for those hatchlings. Lol.:gj:

And another 15 for this female, I did not even re-introduced a male yet to double clutch her, I wanted to get her feeding a little longer before I did, obviously she had another idea in mind and laid eggs anyway.

Daaaaaang! That is one busy girl. How many eggs do your females lay on average?

    She is.

They can lay between 5 and 25 eggs but the average is 15 eggs per clutch and like many colubrids they can double clutch (hognose can do it whether whether you re-introduce a male or not as they store sperm)

What is the thought of a hognose for a first snake, technically I would care for it but I want something size appropriate to introduce my daughter to responsibilities. She is 2 and currently when I open one of my tubs, her first response is to dive her head in there as close to them as possible. Luckily daddy has fast hands... I want to be able to have her help change water and all the little odds and ends. It would be in a viv and not a tub cause she likes looking at them. Thanks for your input.

And I suddenly find myself thinking that 2 females breeding next year will be plenty with a 3rd ready the following year. Still tempting to pick up a female albino anaconda though in the fall to better the odds of producing supercondas. I love the anaconda morph along with the snows. Probably best to start small and work from there.

Hognose make great snakes even first snakes because they are easy to care for, not prone to stress etc however what you need to keep in mind is that while they are not prone to bite you they are rear fanged venomous snakes, the venom is very mild venous and the delivery is very inefficient but it is still something to take in consideration. The reaction to a bite may vary from one person to another so I would be wary about recommending this knowing a child is involved especially a young one. This is an example http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/heter...bate-over.html

I have never been tagged however lately I have one of my 2016 holdbacks that is trying, not in the most typical ways either, I handle her she slithers around and than start rubbing her nose on me and open her mouth real wide (in other words not a typical strike)

It will definitely keep you busy even with 2 females you could be looking at 60 offsprings ;)

Yeah, the girlfriend will be like a little kid on Christmas seeing them hatching and "aww look at how cute that one is!" the more there are but I need to look at this from a business perspective and not go in over my head. That's a lot of stress that can be avoided.

There may be a thread on genetics soon since the world of hognose site is still down. I'm pretty sure I've gotten the dominant/recessive down but we'll see.

Beautiful. I can't wait until my hogs are big enough to breed. It's going to be awhile though.
