Tagged! I'm it!
I had my 1st S.F.E. today! I placed a mouse in Rex's (42 inch, 2 yr. old BP) enclosure and Rex instantly showed intense interest. He slid right into his S-curve and was ready for the meal to begin. The mouse, on the other hand, started moving to the other side of the enclosure. So I reached in (Duh!) to shoo the mouse back in Rex's direction, and my nice warm moving hand got nailed!!!
No teeth left behind. Plenty of bleeding. And of course, an education for me.
Totally my fault (as these things almost always are).
Rex instantly let go and snagged the mouse. He knew it was an error too.
I feel like more of a herper now that I've been tagged. O yeah, I feel a little more stupid too. Glad I don't keep Crotalus, etc. (I'm apparently too stupid).
Ah. Good times.

Oh ouchies Ken! Hmmm maybe Rex was thinking you were after his nummy mouse for yourself LOL either that or he tagged you and figured you don't taste near as good! Haven't had a SFE yet but I figure my time will come.

I may have had a covetous look in my eye at the time. : )
I was probably overdue to get tagged.

S.F.E. = stupid feeding error
Hasn't happened to me yet but it will LOL. I guess it means when us humans get a bit complacent, careless or distracted or just simply make a "stupid feeding error" that gets us tagged (bit) :O I don't really think it indicates your snake is aggressive just that it's a snake at feeding time and you've gotten a painful reminder to pay attention.
Oh Ken, when I told my husband he said..."I think that's snake talk for...hey you buddy...back the heck up offa MY mouse!" :D

Re: Tagged! I'm it!
When it happened it was so obvious that he didn't intend to strike my hand. He was zeroing in on the mouse when along came this warm, moving thing and he just misfired. Totally stupid on my part.
In 2 years with Rex, he's never hissed, struck at me or anyone else. I just came between him and supper. Purely my fault.
One thing for sure, I'm glad I'm not a mouse. He hit so fast, I never had a chance of moving my hand. I was totally owned the minute I reached in there.

Re: Tagged! I'm it!
Yep our two b.p.'s are like your Rex. Excellent, aggressive feeders but very accepting of handling otherwise.....heck I've never even heard a hiss so I've no clue what it would sound like.
Having said that I'm completely sure that if I got in the way at feeding time they'd both "remind" me, especially the 6 month old. Gotta love my hemostats!
We had a great experience last night. We allowed friends of two of our kids to stand quietly and watch Baby eat her prey. It was so amazing to see their faces....first a bit of fear or revulsion...then absolute amazment and fascination! They expressed some disgust at pre-killed prey till I reminded them that the dinner they just ate earlier was in fact a pre-killed prey for them. Kids tend to forget that pork doesn't just come from the Wal-Mart meat section LOL.
I did use you as an example tho Ken. Told them that the easy going Baby would be quite capable of striking at me should I interfere in her feeding so they needed to respect her instincts. Very very cool to watch these young teenagers go way past their fear with just a little exposure to a captive snake.
