Agreed. They're our pets, but it's also a hobby.

Totally both. You need to add that option to the poll. Probably going to be the most popular answer with this crowd.

Both of course because animal hobby is pets by definition in my opinion

i guess in my mind a pet is more than a animal that lives with you and you take care off, but rather an animal which you have a strong/ close emotional bond with, whereas a hobby is something you do to keep yourself entertained, relax, focus on, and where the primary emotions are like pride, enjoyment, relaxation, rather than love and friendship

I really do get both of those things out of my animals!

Definitely both. I'm attached to the animals individually as pets, but managing the collection is a hobby.

Both. So are my rats, so are my lizards. Heck even the feeder fish for my mangrove are pets and hobbies. Just not my roaches or crickets

I'm with the majority, they are both to me.

Definitely both. I have definite "go to" snakes that are mostly companion animals...pets. I also bought some with projects in mind...hobby. However, as I care for them, handle them...their personalities come out and some of them become pets.
Pets are forever. Hobbies (or businesses for that matter) change up based on purpose or goals.

A lot of people keep their breeding rats as pets, and raise their babies as feeders. Or you can say keep them as pets, until they're fed. I know there was someone on the forum who breeds specific rare types/coloration of rats as pets, and keeps some as feeders, and makes quite a bit of money back from selling them to pet owners.

in my mind if you're raising something to feed it to something else, you can't really love it :P

Actually you spend time with them and bond but also understand the reasoning for the relationship.

Yeah, I really like the ratties. I know if at some point I have a wean or bigger and a snake refuses.... I will probably have a pet rat lol.

Both for me. If I had to cancel my breeding plans for what ever reason i'm ok with just taking care of them.

Both pet and hobby for me, then again I'm on my fourth reptile species and I've lost count of the number of species of small mammal.

Both. I've always had snakes and would probably still keep more than "normal" if I decided to stop breeding.

Rats make awesome pets. I kept them as pets for years but strangely became very allergic after having kids. I do currently have 1 because she's the sweetest girl ever and even though I have to scrub myself with Dawn after touching her I couldn't feed her to anyone.

    Disagree with most here
Most people are saying both. I disagree with most of them, but not all. Most people reall don't have a hard time selling and trading ball pythons. To me that makes it a hobby. Do I like them yes, love them no. I love my dog and wouldn't trade her for the world, actually was offered a substantial amount for her and turned it down. If anyone offerd that to me for any of my snakes they would be gone, to me that means hobby.

Both for me. Ive already sold off my hobby animals because we are moving to a smaller place in two years(even that was hard because I liked all of them). I kept the pets although am still breeding the few corns I have. But when we move they will be pets only and no more breeding at all.
I still have room for one more probably a ball python or I may keep a baby corn or two.

I breed ball pythons as a hobby. But not all of my ball pythons are considered my pets, and not all of my pet pythons are breeders!

Just a pet for me...for now. With the baby on the way tomorrow and plans for school/career, etc., I doubt it will become a hobby any time soon.

They all get the same level of care , some are here to stay forever some will not, but as long as they are in my care they are both.

I'd say both. I care for the animals more than most others, I find the work with them fun and the information about them interesting.

I would say both. Caring for them and learning more about them is intriguing, but I doubt I'll ever go as far as breeding them. They're also fully part of our family, so they aren't just a hobby.
