Since I have to breed my own feeders I might as well have fun with it

One of the babies from my first hairless mice litter.

The baby is cute, sire freaked me out a little. I'd like to breed my own mice/rats but I don't think I'd have the heart to handle them and then feed them off, which is a little hypocritical because I do hunt and raise some of my own food. :)

Takes getting used too for some people I am sure, I produce thousands each year, they get handled during cleaning (if you can call that handling, they go from dirty to clean tub), this is probably the most time I ever handled a rodent. :O

Rules are no handling, no petting, no naming, feed the "cutest" first, I see them as food which years back I was wondering if I ever could do that since as a kid I had mice, hamster and gerbils.

It's hard. Especially when you treat your breeders like pets. I never had any trouble feeding my snakes rodents someone else produced, but once I started breeding them it was hard to put them down. They're the babies of our beloved pets! And my kids and I have usually held and petted them a bit. They're too cute to resist.

I agree with Deborah about one thing though. We don't name any except the ones we're keeping. The holdbacks make it all worthwhile. I'm proud of the lines I've started and I'd like to start a rattery/mousery when I know more about their genetics.

You know, I usually don't care for hairless animals but I actually find these to be kind of cute. Not cute enough to stop me from feeding them off, but cute enough that I could keep one as a pet if I had to. :P

Oh my gosh! Totally cute! I once had a hairless rat female and her dumbo sister that I kept for pets. Totally adorable!

My mom was chief of the medical investigation dep. at the local University, and as to be expected most experiments were made on rats and mice. As a kid I loved going there and handle the mice. But one week there were some, next week some couldn't be handle because of procedures and next week some were gone. I guess that helped me detach and appreciate them for the time they last.
There I learned that pups must not me touched during the first couple weeks, if you impregnate your scent the mother would eat her pups. [emoji51]

No offence to those that keep these things as pets, but to me they are stinky destructive pests one step above cockroaches. I have absolutely no problem feeding them to my snakes. We have a big problem with rats in south florida, no matter how clean you are. My brother makes a nice living eradicating rodents from expensive properties down here. To me they will never be cute.

HAHA I was the same way until I had a Grey dumbo rex rat unexpectedly show up in my live feeder order. I could not bring myself to feed it off so I started breeding my own feeders and have fun with all the different genetics.
