Reaction of family/friends to your snakes
I recently got my first snake- a lovely 5 month old ball python. Most reactions have been pretty good but there's always the people that think it's weird. My grandma said having a snake isn't "lady-like" and that I'll have "a hard time finding a husband". 😂 I had someone tell me "Don't forget to feed it or it will eat you!" And no, he wasn't joking.

How have your family and friends reacted? I'm curious to hear about the experiences of other members!

"Don't forget to feed it or it will eat you!" That one is always good!! My mother wasn't surprised at all... my brother was stoked because his wife won't allow snakes in her house, but he can always come hang out with mine...my father is afraid of snakes (even the little garters in his Massachusetts yard)...
Co-workers and friends often seem to have a fascinated from afar type of reaction. They want to see pics and stuff, but still think it's a bit weird.

Your grandma's comment was the best though, priceless!! I have to disagree though, sorry Grandma. I think a woman who keeps snakes is a keeper!

My parents don't know, and I'm afraid of what they'll say when they come visit me. [emoji51]

My girlfriend is jealous because there is a lady in my bedroom lol!!! But she loves her too.

My friends well I have all sort of friends, those who ask legit questions out of curiosity and those who ask morbid silly questions just to be scandalous about it.

I told my mother once that I love snakes and that I had a ball python. She was like, "Why snakes?" and she also stated that she hoped it would escape at night while I was asleep and strangle me in my sleep, lol. Mind you my mother and I do not get along very well to begin with. I just said ok whatever and continue to live my life the way I want and the way I enjoy, with snakes.

Yes I'm sure my baby ball python is planning on eating me! Haha I think people just hear the word "python" and freak out.

Thank you! I am a keeper...a snake keeper :P I wouldn't want to marry someone who thinks women shouldn't have snakes anyway! My grandma is VERY old fashioned.

My daughter is the one who pushed me to get her a snake, about a month ago. All my friends are saying (still is) that my daughter is weird, why not adopt a dog/bunny/cat/fish anything that's 'normal'. My parents said pretty much the same w Kira, that when it grows, it'll try to eat my daughter. Then a friend told me in serious manner: 'don't let the snake wrapped itself around you, coz it's a sign that it's sizing you up to eat you. if you don't believe, google it, the story is everywhere. a girl is so worried about her snake not eating for months and got it checked to a vet. the vet was asking if the snake ever wrapped itself around her, she said yes every night when they sleep together. then the vet said to quickly get rid of it because it's sizing her up to make a meal out of her.' [emoji28]
it spooked me alright, luckily i did my own research and found out that it isn't true like at all!

    @Mike17

You're an adult so don't worry about what your parents think. I'm sure they would come around. My mom hates snakes but she likes my ball python. Whenever she comes to visit me, she has to come check on my snake.

    @ballpythonluvr

Wow that's quite an extreme reaction! I'm sorry that you don't get along with your mother but maybe it's for the best. Good for you for making your own choices and living your life how you want!

    @halfnakedlife

I hate when people judge others based only on what pets they have. So many people have lizards and frogs so why is a snake weird? Yeah, don't worry a ball python doesn't have that kind of strength. There isn't a single documented case of a ball python ever killing someone!

I think it comes down to the fact that many people have never met a 'nice' snake. They think of mean wild snakes that they run into in the wild. I know a lot of people who are terrified of dogs because they never met a 'nice dog'. They have images of getting bit by wild mean dogs in the neighbors yard. It's difficult for me to comprehend but many people are even terrified of puppies. The same thing with snakes, if you get a real nice snake that you can totally trust, similar to a dog, it's a wonderful pet! Not only that but it's neat to show off that snake to non-snake people, usually they are totally amazed at your puppy dog tame snake!

I guess the word snake plus python freaks people out, no matter what you say after [emoji28]
Honestly, I was reluctant to get a snake as pet but I also emphasize to my daughter to respect every living creatures on earth, including snake, so I shouldn't judge snake negatively without giving it a chance.
Plus she's fallen head over heels over the lil snake & cried every time she had to part with her at the expo.
It's been a 5 weeks and I haven't regretted the day we brought the lil noodle home.

Reading these are hilarious, everyone but a few were really interested in him and wanted to read all about snakes and watch snake related nature programmes to learn more about them but we had a few... Eg. A freind of mine asked what if he gets out in the night and eats your baby... He's a 2 and 3/4 foot BP and tbh the appetite on my little girl she'd probably eat him lol and then there where a few who simply said why would you get a pet that doesn't show any affection back to you not like it wags it's tail to show its happy, but my sister in law was the best who is almost repulsed by the idea and thinks it's unhealthy and a bit sick to keep an animal that requires feeding of another animal... So in the wild your dog wouldn't eat another animal? It would scavenge for wild pedigree chum. Lol I dgaf what anyone else thinks or say we love him to pieces and he's our noodle baby lol

Family was not happy, but surprised, thought it was a joke. Now my mum calls my 6 month old python cute names and dad can't say anything bad cause he is to 'blame' I love snakes. He caught me one non poisonous in the forest when I was 5 years old and since I held it was it. They said when you move to your own apartment you can own one and there you go :D

Friends mostly think I am out of my mind. Few of them share my opinion.

The stupid reactions such as 'It will eat you', It will bite you, You are crazy, It is poisonous vicious animal, how can you feed it with poor mice (ya, in nature it eats frozen chicken from a supermarket) ....is best to ignore those, the ones who are open minded, love all animals and are curious will ask normal questions. They don't have to like it, but they don't have to embarrass themselves with such stupidity and ignorance.

Re: Reaction of family/friends to your snakes
Family wasn't thrilled about it, but I've always respected boundaries. I have always made sure my animals can be kept in a space where a door can be closed and people won't be exposed to them unless they ask - with one exception.

I had to move back home for about six months after college. I sold a good portion of my collection except for three animals that had certain special needs. My mother was NOT happy, and my dad less so I think, but they allowed it. They didn't want to see them so I had to be a little creative with where the cages were kept, and I was required to feed frozen thawed - absolutely NO live rodents in the house. It was an interesting summer. The neat thing was, by the end of the it, my parents were slightly more tolerant of at least one of the snakes (she was heavily disabled, a six foot long boa and sweet as could be, but she couldn't move right... I always sort of considered her an ambassador for her species). I got my mother to touch her, and mom said that was the only snake she would ever consider liking.

My brother-in-law is more freaked out by them than my sister, but my nieces are fine with them.

My husband doesn't really like snakes, but he loves me, and he'll tolerate them as long as they don't try to strike... he prefers big lizards (and we plan on getting a tegu when we have the room).

A lot of my friends say they don't like them, but then will ask to see them. Some of them shiver and stand far away, and just want to look. Some of them, when they see how gentle the animals are, they'll ask to touch them. I can't count the number of times I'd heard "They aren't slimy at all... they're really soft!" or "Wow, they're really pretty!" As if I would keep an ugly animal lol

Reactions across the board are scattered, but most people are pretty tolerant as long as you respect their boundaries. I think most of the public is just uneducated about the animals themselves... all they've heard about snakes is the blown-out-of-proportion media stories of giant snakes taking over Florida and trying to eat people, or sensationalized discovery channel "specials".

The reactions I get are all over the place, some are curious and shocked. Some say I don't look like a person that would like snakes. What is a snake lover suppose to look like? I get the funniest looks when they ask how many I have. I'm doing a head count and say right now. I'm down to about forty something. You should see there faces.:O

    Interesting topic:)

My family is really cool with it but that's because they've been long over it, I've been catching and keeping snakes and lots of other animals since I was about 5 lol. So it's been a lot of years in the making, no surprises there. I was lucky to have a father who was interested in helping me and a mother who didn't have the typical fear.

I've noticed with most people, they fear what they don't understand or know. Once they see they are not trying to eat them, lol, most people become interested and and actually like them. In college I converted so many people, even people with the greatest fear. Shockingly two of my buddies that had the worst phobia ended up getting over their fear and ended up getting a snake of their own. Really just a great feeling taking someone that has such a terrible fear and converting them to be another lover of herps.

I definitely would not worry about finding a husband! I've noticed most men, even ones that are not comfortable with snakes, find a woman handling a snake incredibly sexy. I wish my wife would be more involved but I'm just happy she has no fear or issues with me keeping them. The only thing she does not like is me defrosting rodents in our kitchen lol.

I'd say the same as you as regards reactions from others .

Sadly , I'd say a few are intrigued even impressed , the rest are probably split evenly between the shocked /horrified / disgusted / disproving and the rest who stay quiet which kinda ' suggests ' disapproval or possibly a natural unwillingness to show approval in front of so many 'disapprovers' ( if that's even a word lol ) .

Oh and that's all before somebody asks what I feed the names on !!!

I've recently started a thread - Snakes & Celebrities to find as many people in the spotlight who own or are photographed with snakes - I'm just thinking the more non- reptile people who see those images the better .

I've sent a few of the already featured celeb & snake photos to some friends and family and their reactions were rather surprising ... Some who aren't really bothered that I have 20 amazingly beautiful and interesting snakes were really IMPRESSED to see people like David Beckham , Beyoncé and others were happy to be seen holding a snake ..... ....

Here's the thread I mentioned if you want to copy a few images and "impress" your friends and family :)

My mom hated them, my dad kept telling me to force feed my snake when trying to switch him to frozen and he wasn't taking for awhile (2 months, in winter), so needless to say I ignored both of them when ti came to my snakes lol. But I got a piebald now and they both think he's goregous so.

My friend used to own a retic so when she comes over shes super excited to see my snakes and hold them and stuff. My boyfriend claims he scared of the mbecause he's afraid "they're gonna boop (him)" but he will hold them anyways.

All in all it's pretty positive

Most people do not know I keep my animals. Most are shocked when they find out. Especially at the number. My family is not surprised at much I do, they have known me a long time. The most entertaining reaction I get is when my "Frozen Meat" boxes show up at work. I personally do not think the OP is going to have a problem finding a husband at least by her profile picture.

    my mother:
    Quote:

"why do you have to be so weird?"
    my father:
    Quote:

    "cool."
    my friends:
    Quote:

"you always have to be so different."
every friend that has met my snake(s) has realized just how awesome they are. when i got Spaghetti my mom actually posted about it on facebook she was so excited for me (which honestly shocked me! the replies from her friends were not very positive but she would say how cool they are). my dad helps me whenever i need to move enclosures or i need a snake held for a few minutes while i clean.

the bizarre questions i've gotten from other friends and coworkers is hilarious and also a bit sad:
    Quote:

"WHAT IF ESCAPES AND EATS YOU??"

    it won't

    Quote:

    "WHAT IF IT BITES YOU????"

what do you do if your cat/dog bites you?

    Quote:

"what do they eat? (i give answer)...OMG EW!"

    c'est la vie

i honestly love getting those totally ignorant questions, because they make great teaching opportunities! i never react negatively or make them feel stupid when they ask these silly questions; snake knowledge isn't common, and i do my best to educate and answer their questions. sometimes my coworkers specifically try to rile me up with intentionally dumb questions, but i stay poised and offer my knowledge which usually puts them off of their fun.

being snake people is fun. it's why i love this forum so much; there isn't anyone i know who loves these animals like i do that i get to communicate with, and i appreciate all of you. :D

Usually guests notice my reptiles since they are in the middle of the family room, but I try not to bring them up unless I know that person will be interested.

I love how people who know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about snakes will give that well meaning warning. I grew up on a river bank running around in the woods, and I like biology. I've also worked on farms, and kept numerous pets and types of livestock.

As pets, snakes rank fairly high in terms of reward to expense and effort. Easy keepers, once you get parameters right. Lurk for a bit on a parrot forum: people end up in tears trying to live with some of those birds. There are of course happy exceptions, but a 'too, say, bought on impulse is likely to involve a sad outcome. I enjoy my farm, and the the current collection of dogs, pet rats, goldfish, and canary and budgies, but the snakes are the easiest and cheapest. In terms of injury, I think I'd rather be bit my most small/medium sized snakes than any dog. A cat scratch is more likely to get you an infection that needs medical treatment, and again, some of the larger parrots can do serious damage.

I keep rabbits outdoors, but house rabbits are very high maintenance, They need out of cage exercise, but will chew cords, rugs and wood work. Their urine stinks. the bigger Parrots too, need out of cage time, but will destroy everything they can get at. I love fish and big aquariums, but an exploded (or just leaking) tank is no joke. It happens. An escaped snake needs to be found, but it won't cause property damage.

My mom was/is terrified of mine. She named him Green Beans as a joke and the name stuck. I think she picked it so he is less scary. My dad doesn't want me to have ANY pets (so now I have 2 crabs, a fish, a snake, and a dog, and I had mice and rats as well as stick bugs before) and I occasionally catch him peeking into GB's tank because he DOES like animals secretely.

I've noticed visitors either love him and want to hold him (depending on when he ate last) or they're terrified and move to the opposite side of the room.

My MIL and Uncle-in-law were both terrified of snakes, but since I got mine, my MIL has absolutely fallen in love with them. She thinks they're cute now (which they are)! Most people range from morbid curiosity and a sort of distant "well I'm glad they make you happy," to actually wanting to know more about them. My friend at work, upon hearing I just purchased two more after getting my most recent, laughed and said I'm addicted, until I told her that the 12-ish snakes I plan to keep is a tiny collection for most people who breed.

Forgot to mention this point as well .....

One funny thing I've noticed is that when we have visitors to the the house I'd say that 95% of the adult males are either completely uninterested OR terrified of the snakes whilst the adult females are interested OR positively intrigued ( wanting to handle ) ...

I'd say 90% of all under 18 were really positive and interested - the lads especially not so much the girls .. but hardly any children are terrified or disgusted or anything . Generally kids are dead keen but I don't let any of them hold the snakes ever ...

So what goes on in people's minds as they grow older ... ??

Actually Zincubus, I noticed exactly the same thing. Usually it's women and young/teenage boys asking about my reptiles, but most men just seem to have some sort of adverse idea against snakes. Of course there are plenty of exceptions, but in my family that's basically how it works.

My family have all had different reactions. My mother and father were surprised at first, but my mother now loves them and my father and sister will tolerate them but not handle them. My grandmother and grandfather on one side will not even enter my bedroom, but my other grandfather tolerates and my other grandmother just wants to see them every time she comes over. The rest of the family likes to look at them, but they will not get any closer.

Social pressure. Wanting to fit in with the herd. I have a good example of this. First understand that this child has been around snakes and other reptiles all of her life. She has never been bitten, scratched or anything else for that matter. She has helped with cleaning duty since she could carry a water bowl. She plays with snakes and barbies at the same time. It is quite funny to see barbie try to ride a ball python. Anyway, one day we are cleaning and my other daughter who's "job" it is to hold snakes while I clean let an animal loose which crawled across the floor and under my other daughter. So the daughter with the new visitor starts screaming like her hair is on fine. I asked her why she was screaming. She said because the snake was touching her. So i then said to her, you have know that snake since she was born and you have played with her many times, tell me why you really screamed. Final answer was because my friends scream at school when the see a lizard or bug. I have "fixed" the problem, but this is my belief on how this happens.

Children are born with an innate curiosity about the world but often they get the curiosity stamped out of them by well meaning adults. I do let the kids handle my snakes, or at least a couple of them, and always with direct supervision. Riddle and Strudel are the sweetest beasties, not even head shy, so they're my ambassadors :D Kids absolutely love and adore them.

OMG I've gotten the "you'll have a hard time finding a husband" comment too! It makes me laugh, partly because I'm not planning on finding a husband anyway!

All of my mom's friends are scared of snakes, but they still take a look and ask a couple questions when they do come over. I only have Gem (my gtp) on display in the living room, so that forces guests to see her if they enter the house. :P

My closest friends were personally all more or less interested in my snakes and want to see/hold all of them!

Unfortunately, the sizing you up to eat you story has been making the rounds again on social media lately.

Haha, IMO if a husband isn't ready to deal with my pets, he isn't ready to deal with me.

When I got my first garter snake, my mother sent me that same story. When that first snake died, my mother cried the harder then me. Just shows how drastically, and quickly, people's opinions can change after interacting with an animal even for only a few years.

Now a video of a Garter snake eating somebody WOULD cause a sensation :)

That reminds me at one point, my mom was seriously telling me that my dumeril's boa (who is currently eating large rats) would kill and eat my 17 lb dog. I'm sure that one of her friends must have told her something to make her think this way, because she was fine with my dum for half a year or so before she suddenly started spouting this LOL.

I obviously eventually convinced her that my dum is incapable of killing our dog, even less eating her, so she's chill now.

Agree. 48, and still never been married.
Spent about ten years with a guy who finally decided he couldn't even live with a single house rabbit. I am a VERY slow learner!

The current BF is good with the pets, and I'm grateful for that. One of the snakes is technically his, but I care for her.

The only thing that garter ever killed were fish and worms but he was definitely "sizing up" my dog. Good thing that vicious creature wasn't allowed to roam free.

I've ' thanked ' a couple of the posts above when really a LIKE would be more appropriate ... is there a LIKE option ??

I think thanks are all we got. I do find myself thanking posts in place of a like button quite often haha. I think it's supposed to work that way though?

Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone! I really love this community because not many people in real life share my love for ball pythons. Keep the stories coming :)

I think it's pretty funny that some people think that having a snake will scare off men. I highly doubt that it would be a deal-breaker for most. And like I said, if a guy doesn't want to be with me simply because I have a snake, that's pretty immature and not someone I would want anyway *shrug* Also, Grandma's act like finding a husband should be your one and only goal in life LOL.

Edit: I use the thank button pretty much as a like button as well. It might be confusing if we had a like button too because would profiles say "thanked x times in x posts" AND "x likes in x posts"?

Most people I've mentioned my snake to are quite seriously concerned he'll eat my dog. Despite explaining that these animals have thresholds to the size of prey they can eat, and that even a monster sized ball python at like 5-6 feet couldn't swallow my dog, they still think he's just sizing him up and waiting for an opportunity. It's pretty ridiculous, but some people just don't understand that some things are too big for these guys to eat. They see these cartoons of a snake with an absolutely MASSIVE lump in its belly and think that's how reality is.

Just for reference I own a pug dog that weighs like 27 pounds (he's a big boy for his breed, not fat) and my snake is only about 14 inches long (90ish grams) and takes pinky rats lmao

also had my boyfriends mother tell me he'll strangle me in my sleep, I told her that's why he has a locking cage ;)

I wish there was, some posts aren't helpful, but I still like them.

Even just today I got a bad reaction. I posted a short video of my snake on Facebook and one person (that RARELY speaks to me) commented "You got a snake?? In the place that you live and sleep???". I was annoyed so I just deleted it. I understand that not every one likes snakes or gets the appeal but don't be rude about it!
