    Eye infections, thoughts and advice
    Hey all,

Long story short, I rescued some BP's off some folks in the city near me. The male Mojave spider is doing fine, albeit aggressive for a bp. The juvenile...pastel maybe...is a different story and I've never seen an infection move this quick.

I don't have pics as it literally happened overnight last night. Both of the bp's eyes are clearly infected, yellow with I'm guessing pus and swollen. She also clearly has mucus in her mouth. Never saw an infection go from nothing to severe in less than 24 hours like this. I am getting her to a vet today/tomorrow, anything worth while for me to do in the mean time? F10 in a fogger? Warm compress to swab her mouth out? Maybe attempt to see if the eye infections are behind stuck eye caps with a warm cloth? (I think they are, being as she was dehydrated when I got her)

Just looking for general first aid before I get her in. Thanks.

Wow, I think I would be anxious too! I have no advice to offer, but sure hope that you can get in to see the Vet quickly.

Please let us know what happens.

I'm not so much anxious haha, I try to remain calm. If nothing else I gave this little noodle a nice comfy setup for a little while. Looks like the soonest is Thursday for one of the only rep vets in the area. I'm going with a warm damp towel rub down tonight to see, possibly see if I can clear her mouth a little. Disgusts me knowing the people who sold her KNEW she was sick. I did too but I didn't say anything because I wanted her out of there. Will update as this goes down.

Yes, that is terrible that someone can be so uncaring. Good on you for the rescue! :gj:

Second update, doc gave her baytril, eye drops and probiotics so it's a waiting game.

He suggested a uvb light for her as well because he thinks all snakes need one. Had to spend 30 mins arguing with MI madre who went with me that bps are nocturnal.

..you guys think a uvb bulb would benefit her in any way?

    Honestly no.

It can make for nice pictures though.

Can you get pictures of her eyes for us?

IMO, some vitamin D could be useful. But putting a drop of a good bird vitamin in the belly of a dead rodent would be more effective (and cheaper) than a uvb bulb.

Wish the vet had done a mouth swab and looked for flagellate protozoans when he looked at the snake. They often go along with mouth infections.

    Best of luck.

I can when I get home sure thing. Have to give her an injection as soon as I get home ill get it then. See that's what I said and I'm sure the guy was just going off base knowledge of reptiles.

He about crapped his pants when I told him she was in a sterilite tub lol so I don't think he sees a ton of pythons but he was the only guy available and I knew she at least needed a general antibiotic.

I thought about the whole vit D thing maybe helping with her immune system but I'd almost rather just leave her be in her warm tub and only bug her when I need to medicate.... she won't eat unless I assist feed right now and at this point I'd be worried about that pushing her over the edge.

well...I agree he could have probably done more, but like I said this was the only guy I could see out of 2 rep vets in the area and shes in real bad shape.

thanks, that is her name if she pulls through this...I'm half-tempted to call the people who owned her before I just explode on them. First off you don't let your pet get this way and secondly you don't sell it in this condition...they had zero issue selling her to me...I should have called them out when I had her in my car.

Yeah, I can imagine. I would want to snap on them too. I'd probably bring the vet bills right back to them and show them what their neglect cost you. It wasn't a breeder or shop right? It was a private sale right?

ya 100% private sale, I wanted the spider they had, then they sent me a pic of the little one and I knew something was wrong so I said give me her too. I don't even care about the money side of things, its the fact that they don't give a damn about a living critter they CHOSE to keep. scumbags lol.

Yeah, I completely agree. I honestly don't know how people can be so cruel. WHY bring an animal home to treat it that way? And I definitely get that it's not about the money, it wouldn't be for me either. It just stinks that you are whacked with having to pay bills for somebody else's neglect. If it was from a shop or breeder, I would be temped to stand outside the shop and hand people copies of the dated sales receipt and dated vet bills and discourage people from buying anything from them. It's almost too bad there isn't some sort of screening process required before somebody can purchase an animal. Obviously, people would find ways around it, though, so why bother trying to implement it? Oh well, at least the animal is in good hands now. I'm sure under your care she will bounce back and you will love her for man years to come.

lol had it been a shop they'd have had me arrested by now lol. Id have ruined their business IF they wouldn't have made it right. But I knew what I was getting into with this one so we shall see how she fairs. I'm only 130 bills in the hole right now with her so I'm not complaining haha, if it hits above the 3-400 mark I might pay the seller a visit and "procure" his other wildlife haha. I hope she bounces back man...shes a good looking little bp.

Hahahaha!! I feel like even making it right would only be them covering their asses, but wouldn't stop them from continuing those practices. So even if they did I would still raise a ruckus and spread the word buy elsewhere and shut that place down.

If you're on any local Facebook reptile or pet rehoming groups you could always put them on blast as a warning to others not to sell them any more animals.

I plan on doing at least that for sure. The worst part is I'm fairly certain they have a few more snakes in their possession...
