Coral Glow Progression Thread / General Photo Dump!
I've just received my very first ball python! I've had reptiles previously, but I've always wanted a snake. It was probably a sign when I, as a little weirdo amateur herpetologist, first began to bring (progressively larger) garter snakes into the house. If you want to get silly, I've always had a very significant connection to snakes, something about repetitive dreams and little signs throughout my life. Anyways, being that I'm old enough, I decided to get one!
Thus far, he's untitled. I'm tossed up between naming him Chicosapote (my favourite Mexican fruit, with the cutest name), La Luz (another cute name, which in spanish sort of relates to the idea of dreams), Esquite or Esquitito (basically a diminutive of a dish in Mexico that he resembles) or SOLID SNAKE (which is hilarious, but I like cutesy names more).
He was born in July 2016 to Richard Broadhead at Pacific Pythons, who is a super nice, knowledgeable breeder and I'm really happy that I went with him for my first snake!
I'll have you know that, I realize he looks quite stressed in the video but Richard brought him out to show me and I wanted to quickly film. He went right into his (thanks to you guys, perfectly comfortable) new home and I left him alone. It will be so difficult to give him his space to settle down, as he is so adorably perfect and I love the smooth feeling of his scales and his neat purply shine. I wish that I could cuddle his whole terrarium!

Crazy how we're all so different - I absolutely LOVE all albinos whatever species ....
This one is a stunner already .
-
Awwww yeah, I actually love the look of nice super pastel hatchlings the most, I think that they have such beautiful patterning and vivid colours. I just don't love how they seem to age. :P
-
He's going to look cool when he starts to get some spots. I wasn't always a fan of them but the more mine gets the more I like him. CG is a wicked morph. You got a nice one.

Gosh, what a beautiful little snake :)

Seeing yours makes me want to get a coral glow now. So many beautiful snakes and so little space.

First feeding going down tonight! I'm gonna bring home some F/T weanling mice and try one to see how it goes. He seems to be pretty settled in, although I've noticed he isn't interested in his hide, at least I never see him in it. He seems to be in a calm sort of body position, he's not balled up or ready to strike and I suppose he's had a bit of water because it seemed to go everywhere. When I move things around in the tank he turns his head to check me out but doesn't really seem all that bothered, just a bit curious.
First night he definitely climbed a bit for a couple hours, but then he seemed to be exploring and smelling the air, second night he was a bit restless still exploring, and now he's just chilling on top of his hide. I'm gonna pick up a smaller hide as well and see if perhaps it's just too big for him because I've seen a similar topic on the forums before.
I'm really hoping that he'll take the bait today so in a couple of days I can handle him a bit and maybe get some nice late valentine's day photos :D Not sure if I'm gonna record the first feeding because I might look like a doof (I have never ever fed anything a dead animal) but it might be fun to record every attempt. I have a feeling he wont take it because my parents came yesterday and were staring at him a lot and like talking loudly (my mom is fearful of snakes) and I noticed that he flinched when she started making lots of EEW SCARY noises. But he also seems pretty well adjusted and calm when I change his water and substrate so, we will see!

Hope the feeding goes well .... If there's any problem try this proven method :-
I let the rat /mouse thaw naturally in the snake room or on a heat mat if I'm short of time - rather than using warm water which has to wash away the smell somewhat - which surely can't help - even if they strike at a heat source ....
I wait until the Royal is in the hide and dangle in front of the entrance ..
If it's not grabbed and dragged into the hide - I use a hairdryer on it for 20 seconds , then offer the rat/mouse IMMEDIATELY on a pair of tongs - whilst it's still warm . Then repeat the heating and offering until it's grabbed .
Sometimes takes 6 or 7 attempts BUT if they show a tiny bit of interest- it works virtually every time.
If they're completely off their food or in shed mode then they possibly won't show any interest at all and then you're gonna struggle until they're really ready to eat .

Yayyyy he ate! He was actually super into it, I think he was pretty hungry :o It was actually fun, haha what a weird experience. I took some video but you can't really see him because I had to use my laptop to film. Really cool.

Can't wait for your little guy to get more spots!! He seems extremely bright so I'm excited to see how he'll look when he's an adult. Mine is slowly starting to brown out but he's still beautiful (he seems to be keeping the oranges on him) and a silly little noodle.
-
He's a cutey! I love once they get their spots.
-
First time taking him out to handle tonight, I didn't hold him for long because he seemed a bit nervous!

Cayley did you settle on a name for him?
-
He's a cutie.. That is their nature though, Balls are a bit nervous when young. After a year especially two they settle down and arent so jumpy or timid.
On another note everytime I see your AVATAR i want a DRINK!!

Great looking Snake!
I love the names, if I may... Chicosapote as you are right is a delicious fruit but a literal translation to English is "little big toad" [emoji196] which I find hilarious. La luz means "the light" don't see much into the name really lol. Esquite is basically Corn Kernels with spices, lemon, mayonnaise, and chili... yummy! an extremely delicious treat on Mexican festivities!
For the yellow marks on him... Esquite goes along extremely well! [emoji16] CONGRATULATIONS!!!

He's growing so quickly! I have to get some better photos with my SLR soon. Was gonna get a photographer to help me because I have super shaky hands. :P I put him at the end of this video. In the first video, just over a week ago filmed, he fit nicely in my palm in a ball... two weanling mice later and I already need two hands to support him. He may've even grown since I filmed this video because I fed him the night after O_O I was handling him earlier and when he was curled into a ball I couldn't support him with just one hand anymore. Hahahahaha

He's been a bit lethargic lately and as you can see, he is much paler. I assume he is going into blue but I'm a bit unnerved by the slowness of him... is it possible that something could be wrong? He's still eating regularly. His skin seems a bit wrinkly on his belly also... I'm hoping he isn't having a poor shed... *paranoid thoughts*

Cute! I'd keep my eye on him over the next few days but to me it does sound like he's just going into shed.

Ooooh! How long has he been dull? Their wrinkles when they're in shed always make me laugh. They look like they have double chins when they lay down. Meanwhile, bump up that humidity! Soon enough you'll have a fresh banana [emoji4]
-
Yeah he looks like he is going into shed. Will prob go into blue any day now. My CG just kinda goes blue and sheds with no drama. He doesn't camp out in his hide. My female on the other hand acts like she is on the verge of death. It took some getting used to. She doesn't like to move at all during the whole shed process. She isn't nippy but she just looks miserable.
-
@ Cletus = Yeah, his eyes have officially gone blue and he seems uncomfortable about being unable to see correctly. No nips but he is a bit twitchy and moves his head around a lot when I disturb him, I assume trying to see where he is going. He has been camped out in his hide but the lil' piggy still came out to eat. :P This process is interesting to experience!
-
Re: Coral Glow Progression Thread / General Photo Dump!
Remember that when his eyes clear and coloration is back to normal it hasn't actually shed yet that happens a few days after it get it's normal appearance back .

sweet. My girl always sheds 2 days after she comes out of blue. Like clockwork. She will also eat during the shed process. So will the male but like I said earlier its hard to tell when he is in shed. lol. Perfect sheds are old hat to most people because they see them so much but the first time you get a good one you feel good because you know your husbandry is right.
-
Alebrije just completed his first shed and is looking pink and new! Anyone else's banana look more pink than purple? His head especially. Also, I finally got a memory card for my SLR, so these photos are actually nice!
