Herpstat failure likelihood?
Wife and I acquired another BP yesterday which means another showcase cage. My setup now is a bit of a mess of cables with using dimmers plugged into jumpstart style stats for UTH and CHE plus two lamp cord style switches for red and white lighting inside cage. I feel confident about this setup being modular and redundant but it's a mess. Seriously considering a herpstat 4 to replace all of this but am curious on failures. If the main 'board' or pcu goes out, the whole thing is junk where as if any one of my components goes down it can easily be replaced.
Any thoughts or experience on this?

I can tell you that I never had one failing and some of mine are 11 years old, of course it does not mean that it cannot happen, however it is a solid brand of thermostats whereas some brand fail on a regular basis and do not last but a year or two.
In other words you get what you pay for.

I agree. I have used herpstats for a number of years. I've never had a problem. If you do have a problem I'm sure you will notice it before it becomes a real problem. As I'm sure you check on your collection daily, or several times a day. As mentioned above you get what you pay for.

From what I understand, if a Herpstat fails, it will fail off, meaning that it will provide no heat when it fails. Dimmers and some thermostats could fail on, meaning that it will give full power and be a burn hazard for the snake if not a fire hazard. For that reason alone, I am going to go for a Herpstat. My only question is do I go for the 1 or the 2? I'll open a new thread for that when I get closer to getting one.

If my setup now fails in the on state, the dimmers regulate output so no burns will occur. I'm worried if I get a herpstat 4, if it fails as a whole unit, I'll have to cages with no heat at all.

I use two Herpstat 4 and have a probe on every level. It's expensive but I like that I can control every single level individually, so I can have one level of breeders and customize their temps. I also have separate temp alarms on each level, so if one Herpstat gets unplugged I will still have a high and low temp alarm. I have too much invested to take any chances. I found that there's too much variability between levels with just using one temp probe for the whole rack.

I have 1 Herpstat 2 redline, 1 Herpstat 1 redline, 1 Herpstat 2 and 1 Herpstat 1 and I've never had a problem with them in 4+ years

Re: Herpstat failure likelihood?
I bought a used herpstat, still going strong! Such an amazing product.

Too hot will kill your snakes a lot faster than too cold will. Unless your house temperature is really low - like 60*F - then I wouldn't worry about it. Just check the t-stat twice a day every day when you check your snakes.

It depends on the situation.
Ive been using dimmers for 3 years or so and have had the dimmers change output due to mini power surges in my house.
Twice now, the temp was 98 degrees in two different tanks. Fortunately I check on temps at least twice a day.
Countless times the temps have dropped well below 88-90. But that appears to be in the spring and summer with the A/C kicking on and off repeatedly during the day.
Fortunately, my last tank is about to be replaced by an AP A-25 with another Herpstat.
I have peace of mind with all of my enclosures which are on Herstats. I still check on them at twice daily, and have never had issues yet. Money well spent.

Re: Herpstat failure likelihood?
This may be a weird question but what does a thermostat failure look like. Do the readouts on the actual thermostat show incorrect settings or is it noticed when checking your temps in your tank.
I recently added a backup thermostat to each of my main thermostats as a safety precaution - do you all have backup units on yours??
Just curious.

Boa on top
Coastal Carpets on middle and bottom
Jungle Carpet on left.
You did good considering the picture wasn't really good about showing the snakes themselves. :)
