Will my ball python sense my African grey parrot and bite me
Hello i am new to this forum and was thinking about getting a ball python but i also have a African grey parrot and was worried that the snake would sense my parrot and when the snake sees my hand he will think its food or try to bite. my room is quite long so obviously the snake will be on the other side away from my parrot and will be in secure housing. any help would be appreciated.

No you are fine, just was your hands prior to touching the snake. I have put the cats in the spare room and forgot to use hand sanitizer prior to getting my ball python or SD, nver had a problem.

And can Ball pythons smell birds or can they only smell rodents and interested in rodents?

Hm...I never really worried about the smell of cats and dogs.

I'm not so sure that birds might not be different ?

I think I would wash my hands well before handling the snakes. That is something you should do between handling different animals anyway, but you might actually prevent a food strike that way ;)

You'll be fine, I have a redheaded Mexican Amazon, a Severe Macaw, Budgies, Finches etc and my BP doesn't seem to notice or care.

I have two budgies in the room next to them, and they never care when I bring them to the bird room.

If you're worried, just use hand sanitizer before handling your snake, and it'll be totally fine.

I've always wondered if having a pet bird in the same room would always trigger them to hunt or not.
I've been scared that, even with hand sanitizer, the lingering smell of a bird would get the snake excited enough that it would just want to strike at anything warm & moving.

Based on the replies in this thread, though, it seems having hand sanitizer around does this trick.

Maybe it depends on wether on not the snake has tasted the blood ( eaten) chicks or quails or whatever previously ??

Some ball pythons do eat birds. But lots of ball pythons also get fixated on particular prey items and aren't interested in others.

Either way, the snake will most likely be accustomed to the general smells of the space it lives in. It will learn pretty quickly that there might be occasional whiffs of parrot, but that doesn't mean food - basically, the snake isn't going to spend its entire life in the food mood any more than you are able to stay constantly hyped up on adrenaline for years on end. It'll be fine.

I have Chinese button quail and if I touch them or go anywhere near them before handling my BP she goes ballistic and will throw her entire self at me and will actually try to eat me- constricting, swallowing, the whole deal. Even if I wash my hands she smells them and goes nuts. Never eaten or even been offered a bird in her life and she refuses to eat mice even, only eats rats. But she goes absolutely nuts when she smells the birds.

While I understand that you are new this is the second time that you duplicate one of your threads, again there is no need to duplicate threads and therefore in an effort to keep this forum clutter free this thread was merged as well.
