Best termostat
I'm hearing mixed opinions on the best heat control unit what's your opinion?

Re: Best termostat
I'm voting for Herpstat, but it's the only proportional thermostat I've ever owned. So my answer is biased.

I have HydroFarms, VE, and Herpstat. Putting aside the HF's, my first "good" T-stats were VE. I like the look and the duller green-amber display. I also think the menu settings are easier to navigate.
Nevertheless, my second VE came with mis-alligned outlets in the back. Just skewed. It is also very hard to unplug from one of them. Last VE I'll ever buy.
The Rosy boa is now on a Herpstat, and when the the new gopher snake arrives, she will be on a Herpstat as well.

I still have my first Helix and its running great but all my other racks and incubator are all running VE200s.

Also, Customer service is great. Speaking from my experience and the many stories that I have read here on the forum.
I'm not saying the others don't have good service. I just don't recall hearing about the other T-stats.

Re: Best termostat
I voted for VE-300. I have two of them and am happy with them. I have used Ranco and Helix in the past - never had any issues with any of them. VE is just what I am currently using.

herpstat, but it's also my only proportional 'stat so i'm biased.

Re: Best termostat
I am using a Honeywell dc1010, not exactly a plug n' play and not intended for herp keeping, but it's as precise as you can get, and easy to configure. I love the PID function.
Any way good to hear herpstat are good because just ordered my first.

Here is a very comprehensive explanation of how temp controllers work and the different type of controls. Just in case anyone is interested on some literature regarding the matter.

Re: Best termostat
I use a few different kinds. I have Vivarium, Ranco, Herpstat, and Hydrofarm.
Strangely, the only thermostat I've ever had fail was a helix. It worked for 2 years and then poof. I use the Hydrofarm ones for individual tanks like my scorpion tank. I use the others for racks and stacks since they are higher quality and can handle higher wattage. Really it's up to you. Thermostats are all pretty much the same. The only real stats I'd say are a must when choosing a thermostat are these two.. It must be digital, and it must be able to handle the wattage you are going to run on it. Some are proportional and some are on/off type thermostats. I recommend proportionals only for incubators tho. You don't want a spike or drop of even a couple degrees when you're incubating. Otherwise, it's really up to you.

I've never used Helix, so I can't comment on that. I have used Vivarium Electronics and Herpstats though. I will vote hands down for Herpstats. Their customer service is great and IMO better priced when needing more than one thermostat. They only offer the 300 x2, while Herpstat offers the 4 and 6. I currently use the 6 as in the long run it's cheaper than buying as I need. I knew I would need more than 4 from the beginning though.
The only thing I wish Herpstat had was the Herpstat 6 in Redline. I love the red/black look, especially as those are my two favorite color combos. So that's a bit of a bummer, but maybe in the future.
