"Whitey" the BEL, Development Thread
Hello All,
Just wanted to start a thread showing the development of my newly acquired male BEL. He is from a Mojave x Butter and I named him after James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger, Jr., former organized crime boss of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston. He just reminded me of how Johnny Depp portrayed him in the movie Black Mass with the bright blue eyes and white hair.
He's in a 36" x 18" x 18" Exo Terra terrarium with two hides (cool and warm side), small water dish, driftwood, a few fake silk plants on the background, hertopia coconut substrate and I use a proportional thermostat to keep the warm side hide surface temp at about 92 degrees. The Exo Terra came with a background and then I added some rain forest window clings to each side so he feels nice and secure. Tank stays at 82 degrees ambient air temp on the warm side and about 76 degrees on the cool side that are measured with mini wireless thermo/hygrometer combo units. Humidity stays right around 60% in the entire cage.
So far he has been active and eaten two frozen thawed adult mice and shed once for me since I picked him up two weeks ago. Thanks for checking him out!

BEAUTIFUL setup !!!
If only they stayed that small. Once big, they turn into bulldozers and flatten everything in the cage...LOL

hey lmk if you have problems with that water dish: i had the same one but the black coating on the inside bubbled and scraped off after a few days. not to worry you, just curious 😀.

I'm sure he'll end up messing them up someday. They have long parts on the plans that i stuck into the styro background, but we'll just have to see.

tttaylorrr thanks, I will let you know if I see any flaking on the water bowl. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and no problems yet.

Thankfully they don't grow "that" fast ;) But yes, every morning I have to bring the fake plants "back to life" after my big male flattens everything. He even managed to break the base (pebbles cemented together) of one, it was hot glued to the hide. Broke it clear in half...sigh. LOL
He really is a bulldozer and likes to re-arrange every night..

Well, these are on the background so hopefully he doesn't do too much damage to them. Although I have seen the little bugger cruising around the top of the tank before.

Re: "Whitey" the BEL, Development Thread
Whitey comes out every night before his light goes off and I was able to get a good pic the other day of him. He's now switched over to F/T Rat pups and on his next feed I think I am going to do a F/T weaned rat. I also got his new Herpstat Intro + installed and I find him most nights chilling in his warm cave. I am glad I made that change from a Hydrofarm Tstat that kept going on and off all the time.
I just love to see how he's growing and he seems to be very content in his enclosure.

He was out cruising last night and I took a quick shot of him. He's getting bigger and I just can't believe how white he actually is.

Where did you get your fake plants from? I'm loving the darker one cascading down like a leaf wall.

Thanks for the response! Are they attached by suction cup or did you stick them against the rock background? Your setup is beautifully done and helps make your Bel really stand out!

Thanks, they had suction cups, but I took those off and just inserted them into the foam background.
