Where do you take your babies?
I've heard of people taking their snakes everywhere with them. When I went to Austin for my birthday to a little festival called Eeyore's Birthday, there was even a guy there with his Rainbow Boa, he told me he took his snake almost everywhere with him too. Well when I take Calliope out, I get a lot of questions and odd looks. Now I make sure that the temperature isn't going to be too cold, or too hot for her, and that it's an animal friendly place, but I was wondering where you guys take your snakes? I've taken mine to the mall, pet stores, and to Friday night MtG at a local nerd shack in my town. What about you guys? How do you feel about people taking their snakes out into public?

2nd this I have kept snakes off and on for almost 30 years and only the ones that I was selling went anywhere and then when they came home, straight into quarantine

I don't take mine outside like that. Also, I'd say anything over an hour outdoors (assuming the environment isn't suitable for them) is a stressful experience for the snake, imo. Snakes aren't dogs or even lizards, and there are more risks not only to the snakes, but the already negative impression the public has of snake keepers.

Mine stay in the house or on me in a lawn chair in the summer for a short time. Too many health risks taking them into public.

I think the first question you should answer is very simply. Do you have some form of liability insurance? The reason I say this is that snakes, while they may be extremely placid and the perfect pet for you, can bite. When they bite, it is often rapid and unavoidable. The people I see prancing around with them at reptile shows, etc, have them around their necks, at perfect head/eye level for other people. A bite to a bystander could therefore led to significant issues. Therefore, if you bring your snake outside of your house, and it bites someone, how will you respond if you get sued?

Snakes are not domesticated pets that benefit from that level of enrichment. Keep them at home, and do not risk local or even national legislation if an accident happens.

    Just my two cents.

    Nowhere.

1/ There is absolutely NO benefit for the snake

2/ We as snake owners are under enough scrutiny, it's always a matter of when will be the next bill that will try to ban snake ownership (does not matter the size of the animal is) so we do not need to give people pushing those bills more ammunition.

Mine stays home.. And inside mostly..occassionally I take him out in my back yard..

I would never take him to a petshop, thats just not a good idea bc who knows wht he wld be exposed to there...

I never leave my backyard w him, because I dnt want to give my neighbors or HOA a reason to whine n complain over me having a snake, and then HOA making rules against them.. Furthermore, I dnt take him out in public at all bc I too do not want to fuel the anti reptile tarts...

Its likely in your snakes best interest and the reptile communities interest that we are mindful of the things we do, places we may take our reptiles and the general publics perception of reptile keeping.

Yep, not worth any risk to my animals or benefit to them either.

But I'm in the same boat as most of you. Unless your snake is used for educational/ambassador purposes, I wouldn't personally risk taking them out. Too many risks. It's a shame, since I'd love for people to meet mine and see that snakes aren't scary slimy creatures, but for my snake's sake, I leave him at home. Especially since he's a ball and would just get immensely stressed by the whole experience. Instead, when people are over, I invite them to come see and touch him. Much less stressful and risky.

ha! never even noticed. thank you for your insight! i've seen a person or two wearing snakes like cleopatra around campus/stores...i would never put my babies through the stress let alone leave them susceptible to anything. i saw an opportunity to educate a client and grabbed it, but i don't see something like that becoming regular for me.

I've taken mine to a friends when I was there for several days. I brought his tub and heat pad with me. That was when I only had one. I also took him to work with me once when a coworker and her son wanted to see him. That's the extent of me takin any of my snakes anywhere. Both of them have a ball python of there own and just wanted to see mine.
