Heating/Thermostat Question
Hello All.
I plan on purchasing an Animal Plastics T3 enclosure in a few weeks. Adam Wysocki, suggested the Belly Heat Option along with a Pro-Products Radiant Heat Panel (RHP). I'm torn between getting a Herpstat or a Helix DBS-1000. However, I was wondering if I get both the RHP and Belly Heat, could I control both sources with 1 thermostat or would I need multiple thermostats?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
Bryce,
The heat panel will be enough. I suggested the belly heat option when you asked about the animal plastics cage and the radiant heat panel when we talked about heating cages ... I never put the two together in my head. Sometimes I lose track of whos doing what setup with all the emails I get.
Ideally, if you had the money to spend, you could use the RHP on a t-stat for your hot spot (92-94) and the belly heat on a second t-stat for your ambients (82-84) .... but, unless your house gets very very cold in the winter, the RHP should be enough.
Sorry for the confusion.

I'll spend what I need. So that's not a problem within reason. I just want to do right! I had it mixed up, I thought the RHP would be for ambients throughout the enclosure and the belly heat for hot spot. I just moved into my new house so I don't know the temps. I moved in in April. The heat rises and upstairs (where i plan to keep the snake) was always much warmer than downstairs when we moved in. Is having both good or is it overkill and you could go with 1 or the other? The belly heat can also be built into the cage at AP for $45 without me having to order a RHP and installing it, or is having the RHP that much better? I just want to do what's best for the snake. It that's both with 2 t-stats then that's what I'll do, if it's one or the other, then I'll do that as well.
I noticed Herpstat II had 2 probes on it. Could that control both the RHP and the Belly Heat?

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
If it were me, I'd do the RHP sized by Pro-Products and a Helix DBS-1000.
I've done plastic cages with heat tape underneath, but those were in rooms that were heated to 80 degrees year round. I have no practical experience with AP cages, belly heat, and normal household temps.
I don't know a thing about the herpstat, Matt would be a better resource for those questions.

Ok so to make sure I place the order correctly, I'd get:
1. Animal Plastics T3 with the Solid Top, without the Belly Heat Option.
2. Radiant Heat Panel sized by Pro-Products
3. T-Stat of choice either Helix or Herpstat
Correct?

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
That's what I would do, but it might be a good idea to get some other opinions before you put that order in. I've been keeping my ball pythons in rack systems in a climate controlled environment for a LONG time .... my advice for keeping a ball as a household pet might be a little dated ;)

Ok, will do.

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
Any other opinions? Especially from Animal Plastic owners.

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
i don't have an ap cage but i've used visions, barrs, jungle habitats and glass tanks before racks. i'd make sure the guy at pro products (bob pound) i think, knows the cage size and what temps you want at both ends and he will size the panel correctly. i use both helix and herpstat, i had a minor problem with one herp stat so my vote would go to helix. i want to say that the problem was corrected promptly and professional by dion that makes herpstats.

Re: Heating/Thermostat Question
I have a AP T-11. I have never used Heat Panels but I do know just the belly heat option is not enough in my cage in my house to keep the temps correct.
I got mine w/ the two 8.5" cutouts and I have two lamps w/ 100watt red bulbs this w/ the belly heat keep my temps prefect.
I have my lights on ESU T-Stats and the belly heat I have on a Helix dbs1000 which I love and think is awesome.
My house stays about 78-80 in winter and 70-75 in summer and belly heat is not enough winter or summer.
Hope this helps.
I have had my ap set up for over a year now.

Yes, my house has similar temps. I spoke with Matt (Justcage) and he recommended both the panel and the belly heat. He said the panel will raise and provide for the target ambient temps while the belly heat will provide for the basking spot.
He also suggested the Herpstat 2 as it can control both devices at once. So I will be purchasing a Herpstat 2 from Matt today.
Next week I order my T3 from Animal Plastics and then only a few more things to get. Then hopefully by the 3rd or 4th week in August or early September I'll be getting A'kashja from Adam!
Thanks all.

Great breeder and great name for your new one! Is that a male or female? What kind are you getting?
Sounds like you've really been doing your homework!!!

It'll be a normal (hopefully odd patterened) female. I've wanted a BP since i was in grade school. I'm 32 now! My parents never wanted a snake in the house. So now I have my own house! LOL
I've been researching for so long....I'm just ready for the practical application now. My Pro Products Radiant Heat Panel came today! Now I just have to order substrate (ReptiCarpet) and Enclosure (AP T3). I have plenty of hides and a pe-2 temp gun, hemostats, accurite thermo/hygrometer, and plenty of research! I'm rearin' to go!
Can't wait for A'Kashja to get here! By the way thanks for the props on the name.
