Warning dead snake my ghi male passed
So when I woke up this morning I just had a feeling to check on my ghi no idea why and only him and when i did he was upside down no movement still able to be moved around so no rigour had set in and I was told to go get a necropsie at my local vet so he is in the fridge till tomorrow the breeder I got him from said he would replace him with a pastel ghi so I wasn't too upset but the ghi had mites when I got him so I told him that when I got him he apologized and said he thought he got them all I told him it's ok stuff happens I treated him for mites and they were gone for 3.5 months until this morning when I found him dead I was told even though theirs no mites anymore he could have anemia so that's why he is going to the vet tomorrow JUST A GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING DON'T SCROLL DOWN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE HIM

Well here he is :,( I was heartbroken it doesn't matter what animal of mine passes I'm always upset especially when I bond with them alot R.I.P. MR. Specks

Thank you I'm just really posting this and my story because even though I thought it wasn't a big deal as I dealt with mites atleast 6 times before and never had a snake die because of it but that's what a few breeders told me it's most likley anemia and I don't want this happening to anybody else's snakes

I think before people start to freak out especially if they read this and may go through a mite issue, it would take a SEVERE mite infestation and for a good while for the snake to become anemic and die.

Then ask to look at breeders collections I didn't and I didn't have mites for 2 years prior to this and he didn't have them long with me after separating him from the quarrintie rack but that was too late I'm still trying to get them off but they love my albino more then anything

Very sorry to see and hear this. I'm not sure I'd want to buy from the same breeder though. If a snake COMES to you with mites, in my opinion, that's a big red flag.

Not to say that the mites were the cause of the actual death.

Anticipating the results of the necropsy... condolences.

Six times is alot of time to have mites. Were they ever actually gone or do they just keep coming back because they were never arradidcated? When you clean for mites you have to clean everything, even the floor.

Also I'm not sure mites prefer one snake over another and it seems to me the mites on your albino may seem worse because they are easier to see.

Then this dealer seems fishy. Sending snakes with mites and then replacing a snake that has been in your care for 3.5 months strikes me as strange. Maybe they are just a really nice person but the cop in me tells me they may know of an issue that is unknown to you. I do not recall ever seeing a health guarantee on a reptile or fish for that amount of time. But it seems that you may already know this. If you do I'd give the thought of getting another possibly mite infested and ill snake from them a second thought.

They were gone I went well over a year before that ghi brought them back and they haven't infected my main collection so I'm happy about that and the reason why I got them soo many times was I kept buying rats from a breeder who I found out didn't really clean their cages well and left dead ones in their to be eating but that's were the mite came from 3 times when I found out after making a post on a local reptile page people told me I shouldn't buy from their and said alot of nasty things about the rats and directed to a better rate breeder and the worst thing was one person posted tons of pictures of theirs rats before cleaned up for shipping and it was soo freaking sad but six months after I stopped buying from them I heard they were shut down

Mites are species specific. As long as there are snakes around and the husbandry is good(high humidity and temps which mites love), they will generally prefer that type of environment. Rats are kept dry and not 90F. Now it's possible to get them from a feeder but very unlikely. I used to feed my snakes pre killed for years and I never once saw mites on any of my mice or rats.

And for it to happen 3 times? That shop had to be crawling with mites from floor to ceiling.

Anyways, sorry to hear the loss and I would definitely wait at least 2-3 months before I brought a new snake home just so you know that the mites are for sure gone.

Man, truly sad to hear and see this. Mites are the scourge of reptile keepers and it comes with the territory. Thanks for sharing and making us remember how important it is to try and guard against this. Can't wait to see the necropsy result. Thanks again.

I had purchased some Rhino viper babies from a well know dealer and when they arrived at my home they had mites really bad. I soaked them the best I could over a few days and still couldn't get rid of the dang things. I have a room that I put everything into for a few weeks until they are ready to go into the reptile room. Unless it is from someone I have dealt with many times and know I am ok. So anyways since you can't just handle the little vipers I was having a heck of a time getting rid of them. I learned about sevin dust. I was told by a friend to take a small container and poke holes big enough for the mites to get in. Then put it in the cage so the snake can't come into contact with it. Then take out the water for a couple days. The mites are attracted to the sevin dust and go to it. Once they are in it they dry up and die. I used it twice and have never had a mite since. I keep a bag of it just in case I ever need it again.

You can purchase it at any walmart or gardening section of a store.

I've used Seven Dust many times but never in my snake room. Check out Reptile Spray. You can spray it on the snake and it works great.

What kind of viper are we talking?
