Sterilite Tub with Latches

If you have not seen this line of Sterilite tubs they are really nice for snakes. I needed a taller tub than what I already had for the new ETB's house so I made a trip to Target. I found one a bit larger than the one in the link. Mine also has two additional latches adding one on each end of the tub. The lid has a seal which makes the lid stay nice and tight against the tub and with the built in latches I didn't need to use clips like I always have in the past. This will for sure be my new transport tub once my PVC Cage gets here. Its almost like Sterilite purpose built these tubs for us snake keepers.

I added nine holes in the lid of mine and the thing is working great for my ETB. Good size and allowed me to still use some perches I had.

You can kinda see the latches on the one I got in this pic. I didn't see it on the Target site.

Wow, I didn't know they had those! Then I don't need to stack books on top of my tubs anymore. :D

Actually, I'm just curious, how are you securing those perches (and where did you get them?) and how are you heating the tub? I might look into doing a similar setup, if it's a simple thing.

They have many sizes in the line and not all of them are online it seems. In the store they had some that would have been fine for BPs. Even the one my ETB is in would not be bad for a BP as a simple single snake cage.

Turns out that Ziplock also makes a tub much like the Sterilite.

I have that style for my BP! It's so secure and very spacious. She has lived in it for over a year and does fine. I only ever see her wall surfing if she's hungry, which is not often. She feeds with gusto every time I offer her food.

I used to have a great picture of her in it when she was new to me (she was two months old) but these closeups are all I can find now.

This pic is from a few days ago, after having taken her silk flowers out to wash them. They really crowd up the tub like nobody's business. I wouldn't have her in a deep tub without them for long because there is so much open space. Wish I had gotten a pic with them put back in.

The yellowish perch is from Fluckers and they are spring loaded and adjustable. I already had them from a previous setup so I just found a tub they would fit in. They are less than $9 on Amazon and have proven to be a great buy. Ive had them for years.

As to the ETB setup Im heating that area of the room with a oil heater and then have a CHE hooked to a Herpstat for her hotspot. I put the substrate mix in the bottom and a large water bowl and everything seems to be going well with it. I also had some spare vine sections that I placed going corner to corner to give her some more things to climb and hang out on.

They're not too deep for ball pythons. Balls do climb some if given the opportunity, and they will make use of upper shelves, multiple levels, etc, if available, which helps increase the effective floor space a bit. The height doesn't do much if its just left totally empty, but still doesn't hurt anything. Just because they can survive with six inches of head room doesn't mean they don't benefit g from more.

For a hatchling or young ball python, that is too deep. ... not saying they can't survive in that, but they would feel much more secure in a lower roofed enclosure.

Ya know what? Never mind. This whole snakekeeping world is based off of personal opinions. So if you wanna keep a BP in a tub that deep, have at it. ... I've just studied a LOT on Ball Pythons and I know what all of the super experienced people say suits them best. .. but you're right COLUBRID, they could live in that I'm sure. :)

Thanks, sounds pretty easy! If you don't mind (not to pull the thread off topic), can you post a pic on where you placed the CHE? Did you just put it over the lid of the tub?

You are over thinking my post. It was only to bring to the attention of others the new(to me) type of tub I found. Many like me have had our keeper gear for a while and I had not been to Target in a long time for tubs cause I have plenty. But when I found a new option that was better than the other locking tubs I use for snake transport I wanted to let others know that may be like me and not be in the know of what Target currently has.

Its been over two years since I last bought a tub and Im sure there are plenty of others that are the same. That's one of the great things with this hobby. The gear, if good, doesn't need to be replaced until a better option comes around.

I understand. Locking tubs like you have are great things. It's what I kept my whole collection in until recently converting to a rack.

I don't currently have a pic of it but I can explain it. Its simple.

I have several of these Zoomed lamp stands that I used before I had a heated snake room. All I did was hang the CHE from the lamp stand and position the CHE to point right where I wanted the hotspot on a perch. I attached the tstat probe to the wire rim of the fixture and then adjusted the height of the lamp stand and the tstat until I got the desired temperatures.

I have heated several tubs with heat lamps over the years and the lamp stands make it a snap. This is the first time Ive done it with a CHE though. It is working well but took longer to get it right than it did in the past with a heat lamp.

Good deal. I have one rack but still regularly use tubs to hold my snakes while I clean their cage or of course when I go pick one up. This taller tub will be easier to put my larger snakes in too. The thin ones are easy for them to get over the edge and try to escape. Trying to wrestle a 6ft 30lb Blood into a thin tub is like trying to herd cats.

The few tubs I have that had locks always made me nervous as they really weren't locks and I think in most cases my bigger snakes could have come out at will. This new one I got though gives me a real sense of security and like I said will be my go to transport tub once the ETB is moved into her PVC Cage which the email I got today said should be here in three weeks. Just like the AP T8 I bought. In three weeks its gonna be an early Christmas.

Update: at the Container Store by coincidence and found this guy. Seems like really good quality, and it's the same height as the Sterilite 32 qt but with almost double the volume. I think I'll buy one for Donuts to have when she grows up!

Love the size and the secure lid on those, but the weathertight seal won't be much use once you put ventilation holes in it.

True, but I think it is still a valued feature. When you latch the lid down the seal really snugs the lid against the tub and makes a much better seal than a regular tub. Many tubs will have a gap of some sort because the lid fits poorly to the tub but that is not the case with these.

Dude, relax. No one is saying you should start a hatchling in there with one hide and a water bowl.
All I'm saying is that, given enough cover and other additions to make it useful, a ball python can benefit from a larger and more enriched environment. That does not mean a wide open space with nothing to fill it up.

I use the Ziploc version of this tub and they are awesome. I've kept kingsnakes, bull snakes, and carpet pythons in these. They're very secure .
