    Axolotl Planted Tank Build
Here is a WIP on my axolotl tank! It will be filled half with water (up to the edge of driftwood rim). I will be adding a whole bunch of live moss, and the cork area is going to be planted with some oak ivy. The stone area is a filter waterfall, the top rocks come off so that I can change the filter cartridge. The large piece of driftwood has two different waterfall outlets and will be covered in moss (will probably more that anubis plant). The bottom will have black sand.

    More work to come!

Here is Gagnock Destroyer of Worlds checking out his new digs from his temporary tub (tank is being built where his old tank used to be so he'll have to chill in the tub for a few days).

It looks awesome! I used to have three of these little guys but we kept them fully aquatic. Didn't want to get rid of them but we were moving to Alaska so we ended up saying good-bye.

How often to axolotls go onto land? o: I haven't looked deep into their care as I won't be able to get one anytime soon, but it was always full tanks without land spots for them to go onto. That tank looks so nice, I can't wait to see it finished!

Axolotl do not go on land unless they are in dire need and morph into thier terrestrial form. He will still be fully aquatic. The land area is strictly for me. :) I wanted a tank with some interest with waterfalls and plants so I got this high tank for show purposes. Axolotl stick mostly to the bottom so the ten inches of water depth will be more than enough as it is the surface area of the bottom rather than the pure gallons that gives them room to roam.

These are great little critters and very easy to keep as long as you keep the current low and the water cool.

Added the moss! I will get better pics once it's all done (that orange spot is just the muted flash not part of the tank).

Awesome work, you will need to write down a list of all materials so I can copy that setup haha. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks! It's fairly simple: driftwood, cork, Great Stuff foam (the yellow to give depth), acrylic paint (hide the Great Stuff), filter, pump, tubing, fern, two kinds of ivy, four kinds of moss, a touch of slate, super glue gel (attach the cork to the glass or you can use aquarium sealant, also a touch here and there to attack moss to wall).

The art is just putting that all together. ;)

Thank you! I love building stuff! If only there was a way to ship these tanks I could sell them.

Not a great quality video but it gives you a better idea about the waterfalls. :)

Once the sun goes down I can get better still pics of the tank.

Thanks! I love the waterfall! :) Oddly enough the waterfall is almost completely silent. I wish the wood would stay *just like this* forever! But it will get darker as the water soaks into it and some stuff starts to grow on it.

Really hard to get a good pic! The flash bounces off the glass and without the flash it looks really dark. Well, you get the picture. :)

Off-camera "flash", yo! Get a couple of table lamps and set them up to either side so the light is going through the tank. If you cover them with a thin white cloth or white tissue paper you can diffuse and dim the light somewhat which will probably help too. Then turn the flash off on your camera and see what you get. Might help you get better pics!

    Can and will do!!

Until then here is a video when he was much smaller (he's at least twice this size now) eating from chopsticks.

They are wonderful animals! He always comes to investigate when I step up to the tank and he's never afraid to bite at anything that dares disturb his waters. Very personable critter.

His tank has cycled and he's exploring it now! This shot is cropped so the tank is bigger than it looks here (29 gallons).

Did I mention that he has the 'glow' gene? He glows under a black light (which is part of the 'night time' setting of the LED light strip, I don't leave him under the black light for long though. It doesn't seem to bother him but the backs of his retinas glow which must blind him...not that his vision is great to start with).

Your Axolotl and set up are absolute amazing !!

What are you using to clean / filter the water incidentally ??

Also what fish are in there with him ... aside from the White Cloud Mountain minnows ??
