Re: Help with Heat
i use a 150w heat bulb in my 36"x24"x20" custom made wooden enclosure and it heats the whole thing up to perfect temps.
i dont know the dimensions of your 40 gal but if your using a 150w bulb, it should heat it.
are you sure its 150w??

Re: Help with Heat
i live in eureka and its about 58 outside in the morings and my room is like 63 deg(I hate when you say u live in ca and ppl think u live in La) and the lap is like a inch from the screen,

Re: Help with Heat
58 degress? damn you must live closer to canada then.
anyways all i can say is maybe place the lamp on the screen.
maybe after a few days the heat will accumulate and the tank will stay warmer.

Re: Help with Heat
you may need a second heat source for the cool side. thermostats will go a long way in regulating temps and make it alot easier.

LOL good question. well even though i am from Canada i live very close to the state of maine and have spent a lot of time in New England. so i have got used to using Farenheit along with Celsius. plus, pretty much everyone on here uses F so it just makes it easier if we all or most speak the same language.

Re: Help with Heat
Greetings All:
Please forgive me from posting this question on this thread, but I am a big dummy and couldn't seem to find the new topic button on the page, and since it my question is a bit on this topic, I figured what the heck.
On to the question. I have just purchased a baby fresh Ball Python. This will be my first pet of the slithering kind. I was advised at the pet shop where I got him/her that I needed a heat rock. I questioned this because I have read that the hot rocks are bad for snakes, (burns, not even heating, ect) the dude told me that this rock was o.k. because it had a temp regulator, and shut down when It reached a certon temp and fired back up when it cooled a bit. If I remember it right it is a Exo Terra rock. I am just concerned for the little one and do not want to anything to harm him/her. I have a heat lamp on top and a heating pad under the tank, it keeps the warm end around 88-90F, and the cool end has shade and a small pond and stays around 75F or so. I have a 55gal tank he/she is in. Things seem to be fine, but I wanted some reasureance. The little guy seems to spend quite a bit of time either on top of the rock or in the safe box next to it. Of course he has also found the pond with the safe box inside it and he also likes to take a dip about once every two days. My humidity stays around 70 percent. Am I doing o.k. by the little one?
Help please!
Thanks in advance
Ray

Re: Help with Heat
Gotcha! WIll Do, Well I mean I will discontinue the use of the rock, I can't exactly go and hurt that dude, considering I am a cop and thay may not look good on the good old file. I do appreciate the advice. As far as the rest of my setup, am I o.k?? I will take any advice given from thoes of more experience.
Thanks again,

Re: Help with Heat
You might want to try and lower that humidity. 50-60 is a good range. 70 is a little high and you might run into problems with upper respiratory infections. The temps need to be bumped up a bit too. Around 92 on the hot side and 82 on the cool side. You may want to invest in a thermostat to help regulate your temps. Keep them constant! Here's a link to MGReptiles, he's the one to ask any heating and thermostat questions! www.mgreptiles.com/Herpheat.html
My only other question is how old/big is your snake. If you have a young snake, it may be stressed in a big old tank. If you need to keep him in it put LOTS of crumpled up newspaper and many many hides. There is also the caresheet from this site which should help you out too....

Hope this helps.....Good luck!

Re: Help with Heat
Thanks alot for the info. It will be used. As far as the large tank, that is the only option for now, and I will add a few more hides, he has three already, but more can't hurt. Oh yes, one more question, how do I drop the humidity? I have done nothing to the tank to achieve the 70 percent, it is just the nice Florida climate. Outside it is around 90 percent. the only moisture I offer inside the tank is his/her water dish. Also, the humidity checker (couldn't remember the correct name) is located on the cool end of the tank and is relatively close (within 6") of the water dish. Will this make a difference, If so, what do I do. I checked out both sites you posted I am looking at ordering a thermostat, and the other site spoke about the right humidity, and how to pick up the humidity, but not how to lower it a bit. Thanks again for the advise.
Cheers
