New Dumerils Baby Tomorrow...

I'm picking up our new guy tomorrow. Very excited! He's 3 months old. Not sure how big he is but breeder has him in 6qt tub right now but is suggesting a 12qt. He's had 8 meals (f/t mice).

Questions - should I go with a 12qt or would a 41qt be too big (I can fill it with 2 RBI med hides and water bowl)? If 12qt, do I need a hide or would he be fine burrowing in aspen (med hide takes up most of the room)?

So I guess I should invest in a smaller hide and bowl.

What do you suggest for water bowls? I use the ones from RBI for my BPs but they don't seem "undumpable".

I prefer the Dollar Store / Dollar Tree melamine pet bowls over the RBI bowls for heavy-bodied snakes. They don't dump because the base is wider than the top.

Hides are even easier. A lot of the $1-2 frozen dinners or Hormel microwave meals come in a plastic tray that makes an ideal snake hide once it's been washed and you cut an access hole with a pair of scissors. The Hormel ones in particular are nice because once flipped, the top is cupped slightly so it will hold about 1/8 inch of water, which is great for bumping up humidity without having the snake lie in wet bedding for high humidity species.

For my little 2 month old girl, I got her in a 3x18(40 gallon breeder) and she loves it. I just give her deep aspen, 2 hides and a ceramic waterdish. She never uses her hides. She just burrows around the aspen making little gopher holes that she will randomly pop out of during the day. its like she is waiting for dinner from heaven. I'm not sure how long your snake is but 2 medium RBI hides will probably work but if offered deep aspen, don't expect him to sit in the hide much lol. You might want to consider picking up a silk vine from a crafts store and some of those suction cup hooks from Home Depot or any hardware store. I use those too to make her a little vine around her cage about3-4" off the floor. She seems to like it as I catch her a lot late at night climbing along the vines and staring down at the floor lol.

Yours sounds like my Garter snakes. I think they have a whole tunnel system in their aspen.

I think I'll let this guy settle into a 12qt - I've got it set with a little water bowl, hide and about 2" of aspen. After he's settled I'll move him over to the 41qt tub.

This is the set up I have ready for him. Cardboard hide until I get something better. Floor space is 16" x 11". What do you think? Too cramped or ok?

Since its set up, go for it. If you notice he is cruising around and very active, maybe step it up. Like I said, my girl is out and about all over at night unless she has eaten so something that small she would barely be able to stretch out in.

Very cheap and works as well as more expensive hides. Cool thing is you can also make a humid hide if you keep the lids and place something like sphagnum moss in them. I posted about a humid hide I made.

Its ideal to make a humid hide that is contained so you don't lose your moisture through your substrate. Worked great for me especially since I'm using paper towels for my Baby BP, and didn't want the paper towel to absorb the moisture from the moss.

Brought him home last night. He's awesome! My only experience is with BPs, so I expected him to be skittish when I touched him. The BPs seems to tighten up and retract a little when you touch them. This guy didn't even flinch. Just came out of the tub onto my hand. He's expected to shed this week so I'll take better pics after he's settled in and shed.

I'm coming to the realization that I like the fact there are no cool morphs out there for Dumerils (disregarding those hypo-looking few out there). Just variations of the "normals".
