Tanami the Woma Python
I got a Woma! I got a Woma!
We went to Reptile Rapture (Monona, WI, Madison suburb) yesterday to pick up a hoggie for my husband (she gets a thread next), and I failed to resist the baby Woma they had. Male, born April 23rd of this year, Reptile Rapture bred him. Didn't bring the scale to the bedroom (where he and Dizzy the Hoggie are in quarantine) up to weigh him yet.
What a sweetheart! No aggression at all so far, even when the dog wanted to inspect him this morning. And those eye spots just make me squee. Named him Tanami, after the Tanami desert in Australia, where some strains of Womas come from (don't know if he is a Tanami Woma).
Tanami was hard to get pictures of last night, he was busy exploring. He didn't seem to get using hides, so my husband put him in one this morning. He didn't stay in it, but by the time I left he'd buried himself in the substrate, with just his head sticking out.

I made a nice discovery last night, if you put a phone down flat on a screen top, the screen disappears when it focuses on what's down on the floor of the cage - these pictures were all taken that way.

Oops, the first and third pictures were taken through the screen. Second was from the front through the glass.

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
Congrats on getting Tanami! I can't wait till I can get a woma. They are supposed to have awesome temperaments, and I love that they are diurnal. So during the day they will be out and about. I have a big exo terra I'm saving for a woma once I get my own place. I would like one "display" snake that I can see during the day. All of my ball pythons are in racks.
Keep us updated on him. I'd like to see how fast he grows!

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
He's very mellow. I had him out last night and he was mostly content to hold onto my hand and look around doing little exploratory stretches this way and that. We also did a couple mutual nose-boops. [emoji4]

Don't get much cuter than baby woma pythons (as far as snakes go). We have been searching for quite a while now and got lucky this weekend. We picked up a trio from a breeder in Cali. The should ship Monday and we can't wait!

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
We moved our BPs to a rack on Saturday, so Tanami got upgraded to one of the half-T8s. An hour or two after the move he was checking things out from his eggs:

I may be slightly partial, but Womas are just the BEST! Good looking kid you have there! :gj::gj:
More Photos needed!
Cheers,

I assume you've seen this, but if not, it has a few nice examples of the coloring variations and localities. Links to a pdf. :)

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
Thank you for the link.
My husband got a new DSLR and took a bunch of good photos last week, I just need to sort out which are the best, crop, and do any needed tweaks (color/light/exposure correction).

Tanami the Woma Python
One of the pictures husband took a month ago:

And my version - I converted it to black and white, messed with contrast, scaled, printed it out, traced it to get the scale patterns, then inked and colored it.

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
Tanami keeps growing. I was thinking he was getting chubby, but when I had him out Sunday evening he had a nicely-defined backbone. He's so obviously not a climber that its funny sometimes. Here he is exploring the back of the couch, after checking out my head.

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
This handsome fellow must be about a year and a half old now, huh? He is looking amazing! I finally got a pair of hatchling Womas a couple months ago (Sheila and Steve-O) and I just absolutely adore them! I can't wait to see lots of little orange and yellow heads popping out of eggs in a couple of years!

Yes, about a year and a half old. Still a sweetheart, and a great feeder - he actually takes a couple/few seconds to smell/think about it, then strikes.

How often are you feeding him? I've been feeding mine every 7 days and they're doing great. But, i'm a little concerned about the possibility them developing fatty liver disease over time, due to captive bred rodents being rich in fat. This is mentioned in the PDF link that Kat shared...

It is my understanding that as long as you avoid overly fatty rats like jumbos and you feed them just enough to keep them from getting overweight they will be fine.
Fatty liver comes from power feeding as youngsters in order to get them to breeding size faster.
Ours womas have been on rats since we have gotten them but we feed meals just big enough to show a slight bulge. When they were on hoppers we fed them about every 5 days now that they are a bit older (about 18 months) they get a small rat every 7 days. This has yielded a steady growth rate but they all maintain the nice shape with a defined dorsal line and by no means are overweight. The only difficulty in this is they are always hungry and handling without getting bitten was fun. They have just recently began to mellow out and have become quite pleasant to handle. They are super active and come out to you when you open the enclosure door.
On a side note, one our females (the most voracious feeder) appears to have a throwback from what appears to be the larger woma local. Her pattern is just like her siblings however her head is identical to the nearly patternless one in the pdf you posted. The head is elongated and the eyes are much smaller in relation to the head than the other two.

At what age did you start having issues with them trying to eat you? lol I've heard of others having this issue with Womas ongoing. So far, neither of my little ones have done that yet. Both of the little turds have sat straight up and charged me a couple of times when I tried to pick them up, though! lol Those were isolated incidents, though. I think I startled them was all... All I could do was laugh, as I tried to explain to them how much bigger I am than they are! LOL! it's amazing how fearless such a little creature can be!
Both of my Womas have the same appearance as the upper-most Woma in the PDF file. They both have that more yellow-ish/green-ish background color. The PDF is unclear which locale that one is...

All three started tasting first and asking questions later at about 4 months. Interestingly none of them have ever been defensive at all.

Re: Tanami the Woma Python
I feed Tanami weekly. IIRC he’s getting rat pups (the list is out on the freezer [emoji846]). I do keep an eye on his body shape, I shoot for kinda triangular.
