Lookie what I got!!!
So.....Spent my one day off at the Reptile Super Show in San Diego. Intent on only bringing home feeders and some bigger hides for the snake faces. Had such a great time! Started to talk with this nice guy with Balls. Saw a few carpets off to the side. He asks me what snakes I have so I go through the group. He says "oh take a look at this carpet". Me thinks "ok but I'm not buying anything" :taz: Then he opens the box...ugh! Love at first sight! He goes on to tell me it's a Highlighter line Jungle. Whatever that is, lol! Then I made the mistake of picking it up. So calm and docile, just hung on my wrist while I was talking to the guy and he was looking up the info because it wasn't his snake. He didn't know how to sex it so he let me take it to a carpet guy. The guy popped and it's a boy...Yay! That's what I wanted. The guy that popped him happens to breed carpets so we talk a bit. He's like OH I love this Highlighter jungle and 3 others proceed over to tell me how lucky I am to pick him up. Yay Me!
So...whithout further ado...Here is my new addition, Grimes! 8months and all of 125g. He's so black and bright yellow. The outside pics capture his colors pretty well. He's settling in right now.
What do you experts think? I got him for a hell of a steal and I love him regardless!

Yup, he's a looker alright! Congrats and welcome to the carpet craze. :gj:

Re: Lookie what I got!!!
Absolutely gorgeous boy you got there! Definitely a looker. If I'm not mistaken the highlighter line jungle carpets were originally produced by Bryan Hummel. They are a diamond x jungle cross giving them the unique coloration between the yellow strips.

Oh thanks for that BigLou! I tried to research and find out but didn't have much luck. Yes I did come across the Bryan Hummel name too but didn't know what it meant.

Re: Lookie what I got!!!
Beautiful new addition XCJ. My female jungle cross (Trinity) is from that Highlighter line also and was produced by Bryan Hummel. It appears that our coastals and jungles seem to be related somehow. I know our coastals are half brother and sister. I guess great minds think alike :).
-
Haha! Zig! That's for sure!!!
-
Uh, huh. I know all about going "just to look." Never works, does it? :P
Congratulations on the new addition. :)

Beautiful!!
Great pickup!

I can see why you couldn't resist that beautiful boy. A stunner indeed! :)

You are mistaken. I'm not sure of the snake's lineage, but the original Highlighter was a pure jungle male who belonged to Andrew Hare. Definitely no diamond in him.
-
Nice pickup! I actually thought about buying that one myself (wife had other ideas).
I love the tipping.
-
OH I'm glad you passed him up MrB! :O I got there just after 10. You must've been the first one in the door, lol! What did you pickup?

You are right, I did give wrong information. Andrew Hare was responsible for the original highlighter line. However it was never proven to be a "pure" jungle and there is still a possibility of some diamond influence.

Well, virtually no morelia in U.S. Collections can be proven to be pure anything. However, Highlighter showed no signs of Diamond influence. The snake had almost no tipping and it's bands were nearly completely unbroken. These are the first two things I would look at if looking for diamond influence.

I'm not going to get into an Internet feud with you based on information that cannot be substantiated by either of us. I've been told differently however it's really not important. The OP has a beautiful carpet that anyone could be proud of.

And just to be clear, I have no issue with anyone who has crossed the highlighter, or any other line, with other ssp. That's their business not mine and I'm sure they have had some fabulous results. I've got some pretty nice 75% DxJ descended from the original python Pete lines that were kept "pure" and I couldn't be happier with them. I also have 2.2 Highlighter offspring all of which have minimal tipping and nothing resembling Rosettas or broken banding. I as confident as one can be that Highlighter himself was diamond free.

agreed, forum feuding is not my thing either. I'm simply presenting the info I have. The snakes lineage can't be proven

Sorry guys I didn't mean to start a disagreement. I have no idea re: lineage. I didn't buy him for that reason. I just thought he would be a nice addition to my collection as I think he's stunning with a great temperament. I could not get all the information I wanted from the guy that had him as he was not the breeder. I will attempt to contact him and ask for the breeders contact info and try to find out the lineage...for curiosity sake. I have no intention on breeding him to my pure Coastal so there's no worries there :)

no apologies necessary, a couple of us had differing info and posted what we "know"/believe. that's what the forum is for. the origination of the line has been clarified (from a human standpoint) and all agree it's impossible to say with certainty what Highlighter's genetic background is.
you bought the snake because you liked it, which is the best reason to do so.

Re: Lookie what I got!!!
No hurt feelings here. We are all here to learn, enjoy, and share our babies. I don't think any one wants to get caught up in drama. As long as your happy with him that's the important thing. It sounds like you got a great carpet there. Which isn't hard since personally I think they are all awesome lol. There's so much information and miss information floating around on the internet it's hard to know anything for sure.

I got... nothing. :(
Also I must be wrong- I wasn't there that early, but I looked at another very similar Highlighter Jungle from the guy (far left as you walk in- front row) I suspect you got him from. I liked the big girl he had that was in shed, too.

Update- Grimes is now up to 240g as of today! He's a bit of a picky eater...It's weird, he acts all hungry but then won't take the rat. Sometimes he will take it on a second attempt after re-warming...sometimes not!

Re: Lookie what I got!!!
Your jungle is looking great X. He's only going to get brighter too. I love his tipping. I'm surprised he's being a picky eater. He's too young to be hormone driven :). What size prey are you feeding him?
-
WOW,
Beautiful snake. You are doing things right by the looks of that beauty.
-
Thanks guys!
Ziggy- He is getting pups right now but he didn't eat again tonight so it went to the Ball Python...Isn't that some kind of oxymoron?? LOL! Maybe I need to try bigger?
-
He's quite a looker! The beautiful tipping is the first thing that grabbed me.
Just looking at the photos, the relation of the snake to your fingers and wrist, I would say that weaned rats are in order, at least.
-
He looks great. Imagine that, you have to feed his prey to a ball python.:P Because he won't eat.
-
Well tried the Weaner...no dice. This is the first time he's refused two times in a row. He's gonna wait a week now the little brat! So weaner goes to the Ball that ate the pup too, lol! My BP is like "thanks ma for all the extra snacks!" Grrr!
