I think we have a resident
    Or several...

Took the cover off the fire wood and found a head of snake skins. Very cool.

    A huddle of snakes!

We are going to take this apart in the early fall to make sure they find new homes before the coming winter (when we will be burning this wood) so we don't make anyone homeless after winter has set in. I don't know if they would over winter in the wood pile or if this is their 'summer' home but I'd hate to bring wood in and leave them exposed if they did try to stay.

I couldn't get good focus on these guys before they split. I'm going to try again later. These are two of the dozen or so snakes living in my fire wood.

We've found a ton of black snake sheds in the wood pile. Not surprising since there are rabbits nesting under it.

Those are really good looking garter snakes. Probably the common garter species known as Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis. There are multiple subspecies but totally harmless and feed mostly on amphibians, fish , and earthworms. They usually are out hunting, foraging and usually go underground to brumate or hibernate. In a wood pile they are probably just doing a little of the above. Nice pics. This time of year is not brumating season.

Yup, nice little New England brand garters. They are very active, they sun on top of the fire wood. I see them in the yard and when you spook them they head back for the safety of the wooden fortress that apparently I built for them. :)

so if you have rejected frozen rats, those little guys would take care of'em ?

Heehee. These guys are too small for rats. However I feed my rejected f/t to the wild fox, raccoon, and bobcats. :)
