BP from Petsmart -- I know... I know... Opinion appreciated!
Wanted to know your opinion, although generally it's not favorable... Usually.
But there is a pied BP in my local Petsmart:
157g, 20", eats a fuzzy every week, the hatch day is unknown but they received him on Dec 03
    $322

What do you say? Yay or nay?

I like him. I dislike petco and petsmart's reptile husbandry but I'd say if you want him go for it. PAM his tank or tub down let it dry a few hours before bringing him home, get your husbandry on point and let nature take it from there.

Cool snake. But by buying him, you're just feeding the beast. It's really not that great of a price. Check reptilering and kingsnake.

He eats a rat fuzzie right? If he has been there since December 3rd I would offer less personally, you never know. They can't bring in new snakes or make money without moving merchandise.

I have mixed feelings about buying herps from pet smart. Other stores I have been to I haven't liked there husbandry but my local one is absolutely great. Kid I know works there and he takes care of the animals, money has even came out of his own pockets to care for the herps a few times. He gives the correct care advice and his own care sheets. That's an employee stepping up though not the company as a whole. I would have no problem buying a ball python from my local pet smart if they had one I wanted but that's bc of that one employee.

Pretty... although for a little more on Morph Market you could get one that's not from a chain store. :)

I don't trust XYZ reptiles, I think they are too big and the photos they post on Morphmarket are stock photos, not the photo of the actual snake you are going to get. However, you can send them an e-mail and they will send you actual photos, just don't be deceived...

If that snake was at my local Petco I'd buy it. I just threw down $500 for one locally, bought a couple before that for $400 each. I think that's a great price, that would sell instantly on Morphmarket.

I got my piebald from petsmart and I am really happy with him. He came to me too skinny but I just switched him to rats and fed every five days for a while and he is happy and healthy nowadays :)

I bought a banana from petsmart on Sunday. I'd say go for it. You don't need to pay for shipping haha.

Buy the snake if you like it. That's a pretty fair price for a pied. While some of the stores have pretty bad reptile keeping standards, there are some locations with healthy animals. The big chain stores are going to be there regardless, even if everyone on this site boycotts them. Do what is best for you, not to just impress people on this site.

I would find out if the snake has been eating rat or mouse fuzzies.

    Price isn't bad.

QT the heck out of it and treat for mites if you do get it (I do this with all new arrivals anyway, no matter who the seller is).

If you like it buy it, it's gonna be YOUR snake no one else's.

And for once can we not turn this into another weekly "I hate the big box pet store"?

I bet there are breeders out there that we would not agree with their practices either. I really don't understand why people are so hesitant to buy from a Pet Smart...who are we to judge. Check it over, if you like it buy it. I think it's gorgeous and that's a decent price...and you get to take it home that day.

Its a pretty snake. so if you like it then get it. Remember the chain pet stores are only as good as each individual manager, and local employees. My local petco is very good with all their husbandry, so i would not have a problem getting a snake from them, but take the advice and treat for mites and quarenteen.

    Everybody!

THANK YOU so much! Your opinions were greatly appreciated!

After talking to the manager I've got the final price to $275 and yes, I do like the snake if I say so myself. Needless to say he came home with me.
He looks good actually, checked him thoroughly and everything. He eats F/T fuzzy mices but I plan to switch to F/T rats.
His enclosure is up to your standards (80 cold side, 88 hot side UTH, aspen, ~50% humidity, 2 hides, big water dish) so I think he'll be happy. And I am for sure!

    THANK YOU AGAIN!

My opinion buy from a breeder not a big-box store. With a big-box store you've got no information on the animals eating, how old it is, who produced it bla bla bla. With a breeder you're supporting small, often family run business or hobby which further helps promote local economy's.

When you buy for Petsmart you're paying shipping its the person that produced it that's getting the shaft. on the whole deal.

I knew you could get it cheaper! Congrats!! Just make sure you have the uth on a thermostat or dimmer or the snake will get burned! Also make sure your using a digital thermometer with probe like the acurite 00891 and place the probe under substrate on top of glass over uth and make sure it is no hotter than 94.

Idk if this your first ball python but Here is a link to care sheet, read and ask any questions.

    Absolutely!
I have Acurite and Ranco. And I replicated the caresheet to the T -- if there is one thing about me, I always research and get prepared ahead of bringing any pet home.

Awesome!!! For a pet, get what makes you happy. If you're going to do extensive or special breeding, lineage is important... but very few of us are going to get that deep into it in all actuality.

Question, how did you get them to come down in price? $275 is a hell of a good price for a pied. Around me, I can't even find a low-white male for under $400.

Original price was $430. They currently run 15% off on all BP. This guy received another 25% off because they couldn't sell him for quite some time... Got lucky randomly really.

If you ever see a snake you like at a pets mart or Petco but you think it is way to much so you don't buy just wait 4-5 months and go back and if they still have it offer 40%-60% less and you will most likely take it home. Kid at my local pet smart told me that. They let a 0.1 lavender albino that was originally $450 go for $210 after it was there for 6 months, wish I would of gotten that deal!
